“very nice, but not my style”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We went to the Grand Bahia Tulum in May , along with my daughter and her boyfriend. We chose the hotel based on the location and amenities. I must say that service in the restaurants and bars was exceptional. We upgraded to the Diamond Club; while the check in and check out process was intimate, smooth and very comfortable....I found the reception staff a bit too insistant when we had trouble with one of the rooms. The air conditioning was not operational...and while it is not great in any of the rooms (the fan truly helps)..we were asked to wait for 20 - 30 minutes to allow for the room to cool down. That was a bit of a drag, but after we insisted on another room...all was well. I found that the turndown service and the towel art was inconsistant at best. The resort is huge and the carts were very well organized. Truly nothing was very far, so a bit of a walk helped burn off some of those calories. The buffet was clean clean clean, and the variety amazing! The al a cartes were good, we tried the Mexican, the International (the best for us), and the Brazilian. The lunch buffet at the beach was great, with the beach bar right there. The water was a bit more rocky than expected...so if you can wear beach shoes. The fish were amazing, some huge and some tiny. Really nice to have the wildlife so available. We took a taxi to Akumal Beach( it's public) and had the pleasure of taking the escorted tour....highly suggested. Lots of rays, sea turtles and fish. Would we return to the Mayan...absolutely, if travelling just my husband and myself we would pick a smaller resort(as we usually do); just thought since my daughter and her boyfriend were experiencing Mexico for the first time....this would be a good pick; turns out it was a great one!

My wife and I holidayed in Mexico and this is the resort that we stayed at. The welcome that we received was excellent, which typified the rest of the holiday. The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough to help. This hotel is big and it is easy to get lost, so there are maps to help you out. There are two other hotels, Akumel and Coba on the site, then another hotel where the golf courses are... Yes golf courses. That one is Shia Kaan. To get to these other hotels there are golf trollies to take you, or another type of shuttle trolley. The drivers took us to wherever on the sites we needed to go. There are various restaurants on the sites, which all have menus, apart from the buffets. Some of the restaurants are a la carte and some are gourmet with dress codes of trousers and a shirt. Well worth making the effort as these are fabulous. Overall the food was excellent in Tulum. The best buffet that I tried out of the three for me. The location was excellent and the excursions only made to improve the holiday. We went to Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba and the historic sites were fantastic. Must do trip and we'd definitely go back. I would recommend going and not as expensive as you think.

We arrived as a family of four with only the trip advisor reviews to go off so were slightly apprehensive of what to expect.
I can honesty say we have nothing to complain or provide any negative comments on, the whole experience was excellent, great weather, great hotel, great staff, lots to keep the kids happy, great food need I say anymore, we would highly recommend to anyone.
Many thanks

This was my first time ever in Mexico. The people in this hotel were friendly and always helpful. I cannot say enough about how much fun we had. We booked through Air Canada Travel for my parents 50th wedding anniversary and there was 16 of us. They were very accommodating for the size of our party. We are planning to go again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great. There is a shuttle going to and from the main hotel all the time.

We stayed for 2 weeks starting 19th May. We enjoyed every part of our holiday, I have 3 children age 5, 9, 13.
We all loved our rooms we had interconnecting junior suites, Dulce our maid surprised the children with different towel art every day, rooms always immaculate.
The buffet restaurant had so much to choose from, we ate at 5 a la cartes, brazillian, Japanese and international gourmet were excellent.
The complex has 3 hotels u can use all facilities, everyday we chose a different pool or part of the beach to relax at. We enjoyed the swim up bars, the pool party at coba, salsa classes and water aerobics and water polo. Entertainment staff are friendly and make you feel at ease. We went on a bike tour, I recommend you do this on a cloudy day. We enjoyed shows in the evenings, Lion King at coba was amazing my son got to take part in it. Also acro dance and magician were also very good.
We went on Captain Hook trip in cancun, it was fantastic, great entertainment and food.
We swam with dolphins but not at the resort as I didn't feel happy about them being in a tiny swimming pool, I didn't want to support this.
We went to xplor, very expensive but a day of amazing experiences, worth the money, zip lines through water falls, above crocodiles! You get to swim in a cenote, raft in a cenote, jeep safari through cenotes and above ground, food was good at xplor.
We caught a taxi to Akumal beach and swam out to see the turtles.
In the complex if you walk past Akumal hotel beach past sign that says your leaving Grand Bahia Principe property over some rocks round a corner you find a very calm quiet beautiful beach. In the resort the beach was the nicest at Akumal end.
Staff constantly work to keep the hotel and grounds immaculate.
The only negative I have is I emailed several times before our visit explaining how we would not feel safe unless our rooms were interconnecting, I got a reply twice saying they would try there best to accommodate this request, when we arrived we didn't have interconnecting rooms, but a tall German gentleman overheard and changed our rooms, a huge thank you to this member of staff. I would like to book again but the hotel don't seem to be able to confirm that we can have interconnecting rooms which is a huge concern to me.

Stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum from 20th May 2014 for 2 weeks. Arrived at the hotel after 1.5 hr coach drive from Cancun Airport to receive a welcoming Margarita (nice touch) . Check in painless Mr. Hugo Hernandez so professional and a really nice Guest Service Manager. Room allocated in block 34 closes to the beach. Room had everything you would require for a pleasant stay. The resort is vast and you are assisted around the 3 hotel sites by trolley carts which are brilliant and driven by the most helpful personnel. The grounds are amazing and so well kept. All the staff here at the Gran Bahia Principe are fantastic people and are a credit to the Bahia Brand, they are the secret of the hotels success, every department has its star personnel. The buffets are amazing , and the choices are incredible . The A'la Carte restaurants are fantastic and once again the personal service is first class. The pools are many spread over the site and are great , you can find a pool with entertainment included or a quiet pool just to relax by the side of , bars are great at the pools. The entertainment (Animation Team ) work hard and are extremely talented people. The beaches are wonderful and varied , some are a bit rocky , some are easier to walk into the ocean at different points. You will see lots of wildlife around the hotel which makes staying there very interesting. At night the entertainment we found to be really professional and enjoyable . The only downside at night and we heard many people remark about was that staff (who cannot be blamed for this) come around before the bar closes - removing cushions and table lights and turning off lights to have you move out and head off , this seemed to annoy quite a lot of people from what we saw . But in saying that , you could go to other areas like the La Ranchita disco for which was open till 2.30pm. with drinks provided if you so wished. Staff that deserve a mention are Gabriel in Tequilla Restaurant - Manuel in Tulum Bufett - Panfilia ,Yolande , Rosario, in Tulum Lobby Bar - Roman, Alfredo ,Mauricio - Animation Team , Mr Hugo Hernandez front desk , and there are many, many more who made this 2 week stay so enjoyable , so forgive me if I did not mention you - the only down point for us that the last 3 or so days we had thunderstorms and in the room the wardrobes leaked in lots of water that wet our clothes and we had to pack soaked clothes into our cases for the trip home . Our maid service Edel was excellent , first class attendant and deserves a mention. We had a fantastic time at The Gran Bahia Principe Tulum and met lots of New friends , particularly the wedding party of Chris & Jennifer who are an amazing family , and Rachael & Jock , and many more people . You will not be disappointed when you holiday here, and will have a fantastic vacation . We are now looking forward to visiting the Bahia Principe Costa Adeje Tenerife in January 2015 where we have been before and is also an excellent hotel and shall return no doubt to The Gran Bahia Principe Tulum in the not so distant future . Thanks for an amazing holiday.

Room Tip: If you like to be close to the beaches blocks 34 - 35 are a good choice .

We had a week at the Grand Bahia Principe and thoroughly enjoyed it. Whatever measurement you might want to use on this resort – food, accommodation, staff, etc – it is nearly impossible to not give them full marks.

There are actually three interconnected resorts here called Akumal, Tulum and Coba. A regular commuting service runs between them all in the form of ‘trains’ – that is converted cars with carriages behind them. This is really useful because you can eat and drink in any restaurant or bar, or go to any pool, or indeed use any facility at any of the three resorts.

The food is excellent both in the main buffet restaurants and in the speciality ones. As is common with these types of resorts you get a limited number of vouchers allowing you to eat at one of the a la carte themed restaurants. The best two are definitely the Japanese (called La Mikado) and the Brazilian (La Gran Tortuga).

The evening entertainment is of a reasonably high standard and all three resorts have large purpose built theatres. Its best to check what is playing where at the beginning of the week and organise your evening entertainment around going to see the ones you want at whichever of the three resorts they are shown.

If you are British like me, you will consider access to the web a fundamental need and right, sitting squarely on Maslow’s triangles base so you will be aggrieved to discover the internet is rationed: You are permitted one hour per day in the reception area. You can of course buy a weekly access pass – but you can also lengthen your daily access by simply going to all three of the resorts reception area! When will hotels/resorts start to allow us access to internet without extra charges?

One outing I thoroughly recommend is go to a place called Xel-Ha. It is a water park based on a river which runs into the sea. Well worth the entry cost and once there everything you need is included such as food, drink and most of the activities. Remember to take a credit card with you though because you need to leave a refundable deposit on the snorkelling equipment.
I also recommend going to Akumal beach to see and swim with the turtles. This beach is just 5 minutes from the resort. You can get there on the bus (called el collectivo) for about 50 pesetas or take a taxi. The tours are guided and cost about $12 per person. Get there for 9am before it gets busy and you’ll probably also be in a smaller group of swimmers.

Some tips:

On the transfer from the airport to the hotel the guide on the bus will try and sell you a cheap plastic bracelet which they will claim will keep the mosquitos away. I did not buy for one as the empirical evidence that they actually work was not persuasive enough for me. However there are hardly any mosquitos and I was bit only twice in a week. Just spray a bit of anit-mozzy on your ankles.

There is the option to pay for Superior Club Hacienda rooms, but my experience is that there was not much extra that benefitted me. There is a specific bar for Hacienda guests, a dressing gown and slippers. There’s also a specific restaurant but the food choice is less. There is a special Hacienda pool too which is more ‘private’. If none of these things appeal to you save your money and get a standard room.

All in all a fabulous holiday and I have only touched upon how good this resort is here.
