“Great vacation at the GBPC”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

I have many great things to say about this resort so let's start with the check in. We checked in at 10am and we're welcomed with appetizers and welcome drinks. Everything went very good and quick!

Rooms: We stayed in building 23. Very close to main Coba lobby, kids water park, many surrounding pools, buffet and trolley pickup.

Beach: The beach is amazing! Many different sections to it to please everyone. There's open areas where you can play in the waves. There's the closed off sections where smaller children can play and enjoy the without worrying they'll be swept away by a wave. Nice areas where you can snorkel. You can walk a ways along the shore line also which is very nice!

Pools: The pools are nice and many to chose from. The time we did spend by the pool we were at the one right by the kids water park. This pool had music pumpin' and some really fun pool side activities.

Food: We did Mediterranean cuisine, Mikado restaurant, Le gourmet and Portofino restaurant. They were all amazing! The only downfall is the Mikado "Japanese" restaurant makes their rolls with cream cheese instead of avocado was weird to me. But other then that it was really good.

Rooms: The beds are firm and they give you three small pillows so it's not the most comfortable, but we slept well. Our ceiling fan was making a racket and we kept postponing calling someone to fix it cause we thought it would take them for ever. Well we suffered for three nights for nothing. I finally gave in and called maintenance they came right away and tada!!! Fixed :)

The room was cleaned daily and I have absolutely no complaints they did a great job. The turn down service was a cute bonus. Every time we'd come in from dinner we had cute chocolates and added touches to our bed.

Grounds: Very clean and very well maintained and many wildlife running around to see.

Recently returned from a wonderful vacation @ the GBP Coba. This was our 15th visit to an all inclusive and the fourth visit to the Coba. As in the past, we had no complaints at all regarding the this hotel. In fact, they really seemed to go out of their way to make sure we had a good vacation. We booked thru Apple Vacations and selected the Golden Premier upgrade.
And for some perspective, all four hotels at this location where 100% booked during our stay (April 6th thru the 13th.).
Some highlights:
• Transfer from the airport to the Coba was prompt and without incident. Nice job Apple. (About 65 minutes.)
• Check-in was really nice. Antonio Enriquez greeted us when we arrived about 1 PM. He brought the four of us to lounge chairs where we filled out our paperwork while enjoying two excellent margaritas. He made sure we had a ground floor room since steps were a problem for one of us. Antonio had also booked all of our specialty restaurants in advance which was nice because of the full house. A great host and greeter.
• Our rooms were ready about 2:30 PM, again a nice surprise considering the occupancy.
• We enjoyed five of their specialty restaurants. Food was good each time. Service was great.
• Buffet was fine. You should be able to find something you like. Fruit & salads always looked fresh. Omelet station has a tendency to overcook but they were still better than scrambled eggs.
• Grounds were always immaculate. Excellent grounds crew.
• We used both the quiet pool at Coba and the Akumal pool near the lobby. Both well maintained.
• Pool bar at Akumal had one really good bartender, one not so great.
• Bartender at Golden lobby made great drinks.
• Ocean swimming (or wadding) is better with water moccasins. Lots of rocks in some areas.
• Beach is nice for long walks.
• Took one excursion. It was Cenote Maya and ancient Mayan city of Ek Balam. $118 per person. 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. We had fun. You can repel down some ropes into the cenote (about 75 feet) and take a swim. At Ek Balam you climb a really high pyramid. 90 minute ride each way. Olga Gladkova was a terrific tour guide. She made the adventure a lot of fun. Good sense of humor.
• If interested in visiting Playa Del Carmen (which you should try to do), don't take the "free" shuttle which first stops at a jewelry store. In the long run, it's probably cheaper to take a cab.
• Check out was quick and easy. Bags were picked up promptly. The bellman at the Premier lobby (Jose Puc) was always pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: If you like to read a little in bed before retiring for the night, bring a little flashlight. Bedsi...

The first impression was not great. Upon arriving from our bus to the main lobby at ~8:00pm, we stood in a short line that appeared to move quickly. Ten minutes later, we were called up, handed our credentials over, and were handed two forms and a pen. We finished the form in 30 seconds but...the employee had vanished. So we kept waiting. Ten minutes went by. We saw him go back and forth a few times...and then began helping more check-ins at the opposite side of the desk. Then he helped another couple. Then another. And after 30 minutes we flagged down the manager, who said he would help us in one minute. After another ten minutes, we noticed as everyone at the desks were angry, and some were yelling. It turns out they overbooked.

Simple solution: don't overbook, Grand Bahia Principe. It's pretty easy. Can you count? Can you add and subtract? Good, then overbooking is the simplest thing in the world to avoid. Not that hard.

So we were hurried to a cart where we were driven to...another lobby. And then we got in line. Only one poor woman was at the desk, which was understaffed! So that was around a 30 minute wait. So it took us overall an hour and a half to "check in". I was sick with a fever that night and it seemed like an eternity of standing.

Thankfully, after a day of resting, I felt much better, and it was smooth-sailing from there on.

We were upgraded to a larger room with a free room safe for our troubles. We were told we'd be given free wi-fi as well, but that never happened. But that wasn't really a problem - if you need more than an hour per day of wi-fi, then why are you in vacation?

The rooms were cleaned very well every day, and the room was very nice. We were lucky and got building...I think ti was 23? On the first floor, too. So we were right next to many a la carte restaurants and the Coba lobby. Not a lot of walking on our part!

The carts that circle the paths are very frequent and convenient. We never waited more than 5 minutes for a cart going to where we needed to be.

The staff were all exceptional. I've been to Mexico 5 times now, and the 4 previous times, had seen a few employees who seemed like they didn't want to be there, but not at Bahia Principe. They were all very attentive and friendly.

Particularly the ladies at the Coba lobby at night. Every night we stopped there for drinks and to watch the hilariously drunk people dance about.

Conveniently, I was able to smoke my cigars pretty much anywhere. A refreshing change from the joke-laws in Canada pertaining to where you can smoke. It's worth noting, then, that if you're a hypochondriac or think anyone and everything is out to harm your innocent, beautiful children, that many people smoke around the main lobbies where you have to pass through with your family. Don't like it? Then have a nice sob and get over it. :)

The food was hit or miss. All of the a la carte food was amazing. Particularly the Italian and Japanese. But make reservations WELL in advance. On your first night there, even. The buffets....they tasted GREAT as long as you get there very early for breakfast, or between 11:30-12 for lunch. Once the food isn't fresh from the first batch, then you'll find a lot of lukewarm or even cold food that doesn't taste very good. It feels like a lot of the dishes are even leftovers from previous buffets. But when you can get fresh food, it is delicious. Particularly the made-to-order omelettes and, at lunch, the pasta. I ate nothing but pasta for 5 of my lunches during my stay. It was delicious.

We didn't check out the shows or entertainment, really. Mostly laid by the pool. The Hacienda is a good place to get all of your souvenir shopping done at because, honestly, they sell the exact same mass-produced stuff that you will see at literally every single store and stand in the entirety of the Mayan side.

One big annoyance though. Their "Premiere" club. Avoid these areas if you can - they have desks in their viscinity, and annoying employees will call at you EVERY TIME you pass by. They will try to make conversation, and then tell you to stop by for breakfast and a small talk about their little club. It's just like timeshare. They offer you a cheap tshirt or bag to try rope you in to spending a ton of money.

Remember, avoid the guys in black shirts who try to talk to you! We learned after the first time to just walk by and pretend you don't hear them.

There are some minor annoyances, but this was the best resort I've stayed at in Mexico. The groundskeeping is immaculate and the staff are phenomenal - just watch out for rocky beaches and stale food now and then. Highly recommended.

Family of 4 travelled here from April 13-20. Our kids are 12 and 7. We got an amazing price and normally travel to resorts around 300-500 rooms, so this one as advertised is much bigger. We did get the golden package which had some nice perks, the best being able to use the Cozumel restarrant for breakfast. This leads me into one of the only major concerns I experienced at this resort. The main buffet in the morning is a mad house and the wait staff are so overworked, many of them just give up (I don't blame them). Please give this area more staffing so it can be corrected. The only other concern here is the wi-fi, which we gladly paid the $45 for the week to have, but it failed in many areas and quite often.
Other than these issues, this resort is very clean, friendly and the widelife around the resort is great. I would return here int he future. 4.5 stars in my books.

Room Tip: stayed in room 32504 - seemd very central to everything you need

Our 3rd stay and still a great place to escape to. We flew Air Transat (had not had good luck with them in the past) and our flight and transfers were seamless. To be honest, we were surprised! Check in was smooth and relatively quick considering a wedding party of 24 was checking in ahead of us. Our mini suite was as expected, a few upgrades were noticed over previous stays. Maid service is strangely hit and miss even though they seem to be at our door 50% of the time we popped back to our room! Enjoyed the buffet at Tulum and Coba, Akumal was definately not one I would return to. Enjoyed the Pescador, Fruto Mel Mar, Oasis and Tequila a la carte restaurants. Do NOT miss the Tequila! Absolutely the best! The resort was at full capacity while we were there but still had no problems finding either pool or beach chairs. There were lots of young families around which was nice to see, if you want an adult vacation find another resort! Beach was red flag most days but you could still swim and snorkel close to the beach. The time share marketers are getting slicker with their sales approaches: there is a card in your room with your name on it informing you that you have won a gift and to present your card to the desk in the main lobby: its the time share people trying to capture you! We saw the same sales people every single morning with people wasting their vacation time with the sales pitch. I simply waved them off every time we walked by their station in the lobby. I slept well even though the beds are firm. The resort is kept very very clean.Food was good but noticed the selection in pool side snack bars was not very good this year. We will be back again. Much easier to spend time at this huge resort on subsequent visits! Love Bahia Principe Coba!

My review is tardy, but better late than never. We had decided to do something different for Christmas and spent Christmas 2013 in Mexico at the Gran Bahia Principe Coba. This being our second visit to Mexico and one of many to the Bahia Principe chain, we knew our stay would be perfect. AND PERFECT IT WAS. I just cant say enough about the Bahia Principe Coba. The staff, the resort, the beach....was just stupendous.

The resort very beautifully decorated for Christmas, and the food...OMG...the food was out of this world. I mean, any Bahia is a sure bet, but wow..this place here surpassed all of my expectations. The displays at the buffets, the a la cartes...and on the resort was breathtaking. Our goal when my wife and I travel is to relax and enjoy the beauty of the areas we visit...the Bahia Coba fulfilled all of what we needed, without a hitch...from the check in, to check out...everything was absolutely wonderful. Enough palapas for everyone...no need to get up at 4:30 am to reserve one....whether at the beach or at the pool. Entertainment to suit any taste...and you wont be disappointed. But, the people, the staff and the beautiful Spanish language is what makes visiting Mexico and especially the Coba very special. My first trip down south I decided to learn the Spanish language an have not looked back. I enjoy speaking the language and feel they warm up to you for at least trying....I love it. We are returning to Mexico in a couple of days. Unfortunately it wont be at the Bahia, as my trip involves a class trip organized by a third party, however, its is still in the Maya Riviera area and I am sure that the beautiful people of Mexico will make this trip just as special as the one at Christmas time. But back to my review...if you are contemplating a stay at the Gran Bahia Prinicipe Coba...Please don't hesitate you will not regret your decision. The staff at the resort make sure that all of your needs are met, and your stay is unforgettable. Trust me, if you want a trip to remember, the Coba is a sure bet for a great great vacation
