We had a wonderful stay at Akumal Breakers. The house and grounds are amazing and Mirna and Luis are wonderful people, cooks, masseuses and house/grounds keepers. We stayed for a week and enjoyed every second. The grounds outside are cozy and provide a nice sense of privacy with stunning views of the beautiful blue water. The hardest decisions were which hammock to lay in or what lounge chair to enjoy. Snorkeling was wonderful. We saw several rays, lots of fish, a turtle, some squid, sea urchins and all kinds of live coral. We enjoyed listening to the music provided and luxuriated in long slow days of reading, gabbing, playing games and walking on the beach. We took a day to drive to Coba and see the ruins then spent the evening in Tulum. It was a wonderful stay.
Akumal Breakers is exactly as advertised. Gorgeous, private, well maintained and comfortable. Luis and Mirna were delightful, unobtrusive caretakers--Mirna made two delicious meals for us and tidied up each morning, and Luis kept everything in order. They were also a great resource and answered questions about the area (we were fortunate to have a native Spanish speaker in our group). We enjoyed snorkeling off the beach, games in the pool, a visit to Dos Ojos cenote, and fishing in the surf at Sian Ka'an. There was something for everyone. Akumal Breakers was the perfect home base for our group of seven. I highly recommend it.
The location is just perfect--the beach is right outside your door! This is an excellent family-friendly home with a beautiful pool, well-stocked kitchen, and helpful people on site. There are numerous nearby attractions--Mayan ruins to visit, cenotes and lagoons to snorkel, caves to explore, and delicious restaurants. We will definitely be back! Mirna and Louis were exceptional. Thank you for our wonderful vacation.
We are a large extended family (11 of us including 5 kids ages 3-11). Everything about our stay at Akumal Breakers was amazing. We had such a great time. Mirna and Luis were both so helpful, kind and warm. We had them do some shopping and prepare 2 dinners for us during our stay. Based on other reviews, we asked for the pork dish and, man, was that ever delicious!! I would highly recommend it. Mirna and Luis are available to do more but with us having a car, we did most of the shopping and cooking ourselves.
Our kids loved the pool, the adults loved the snorkeling. We snorkeled right from our beach and we saw so many varieties of fish and even saw a few sting rays. The "snorkeling with the turtles beach" was very close by, however, during our trip it was closed due to a government conservation project. Turned out, though, that we saw so much great stuff right from our own beach that we really didn't miss it.
We rented a large van so we were able to go out for some sight-seeing and adventuring. We highly recommend Dos Ojos Cenotes. While my mother-in-law and the little kids (ages 3 & 4) didn't go in, everyone else did... including kids ages 11, 8 and 7. We brought our own snorkel gear but they do have some available there. They provided us with wet suits and, for those who needed them, life jackets. We swam through the cenotes, marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites and ventured into a bat cave (which the kids especially liked). Underneath, you could see the scuba divers who were adventuring through underwater caves.
Some of our group also took a trip to Xel Ha Park on our last day. It ended up being the highlight of the trip for them. We ate dinner in Akumal and visited the ruins in Tulum. We ate our meals at the outdoor table and went for night swims in the pool. We napped and read in the hammocks. Everything was clean and well maintained. The places we went to visit were so close by and convenient. This was one family vacation we will not soon forget. We loved it so much that we have already started talking about returning to Akumal Breakers sometime in the future.
Though we have been West Coasters for many years, in each of our four visits to the Yucatan, we have found that part of the Caribbean it to be the quietest, most relaxing area of Mexico. Akumal Breakers is a very well designed house and property, situated on one of the nicest sections of beach in the well protected Bay of Akumal. The common areas are spacious and comfortable, the bedrooms are roomy, quiet, and private, and the yard/beachfront has everything you might want. As a family group of eight, ranging in age from 11 to 70+, we found something for everyone - from the water sports and relaxation in our backyard, to daytime outings for natural wonders and archeologic history, to simple local dinners prepared at home or nearby in Akumal, to the laid-back chic of Tulum Beach, 35 minutes away, with its many excellent but simple restaurants.
All in all, it would be hard to find a better warm weather getaway for our group.
We take an annual trip to Mexico with our 2 little ones and another family with a little girls as well + a nanny (5 adults 3 kids total). We usually stay at a big resort but we wanted more space and decided to try Akumal Breakers! We will NEVER look back and are rebooking already a year in advance and extending our stay because we loved it so much! Every single detail was perfect, from the layout, to the direct beautiful beach access, to the sand toys/paddle boards and kayaks. The staff was so kind and accommodating, including participating in our crazy last night dance party with the kids!- considering we needed grocery trips almost everyday- they didn't make a fuss! The food that was prepared was authentic, so delicious and it felt like family dinners every night. I wish we found this house earlier, but now that we have, we will go no where else! Hands down- the BEST family vacation.
Pros: stunning house, beautiful soft sandy beach, large pool, large rooms, so thoughtfully laid out and planned, amazing staff.
Cons: ZERO
Take a home that makes you feel like it is yours with all the creature comforts you would require, add the most breathtaking views plus the amazing staff of Luiz and Mirna and you get the most awesome Mexican experience. This was our first trip to Akumal and the place is stunning, Akumal breakers with its own beach right out back make this an experience perfect for couples and families with small children. You can opt for meals made and just bask in the atmosphere or make your own. I could write a book that would do this place no justice, go there you will thank me!
