“Pretty beach, good snorkeling...”
Review of Half Moon Bay

Ranked #8 of 29 things to do in Akumal

Reviewed 31 March 2013

We rented Casa Tucan, a house across the road, in February. Beach access was a bit difficult. There was a trail south of our home and we were able to access the beach with a 5 minute walk, but someday when all the beachside lots are filled with homes, there will be no easy beach access. We had hoped to be able to walk north along the beach but are unable to do so due to a rock wall built up and into the water at a condo complex. Couldn't find another beach access from the road on the north side. This was very disappointing. That being said, the bay is pretty, much quieter than Akumal Bay and has great snorkeling. Due to how the reef is situated, it can be very wavy when the wind is up. If it is then the bay at Akumal is usually better for snorkeling. There are some sandy patches on the beach, but there is a bit more coarser sand and some gravel like areas and small rocks. Water shoes are recommended. We navigated in and out with our fins on. It is quite the jaunt swimming out towards the reef. There is the occasional coral formation along the way and most of them have a couple fish hanging around them. The closer to the reef, the better the sea life. It is a bit of a maze navigating at the edge of the reef and one needs to be careful not to touch anything. This is made difficult with the current that pulls you - but we never felt it was dangerous. We are all experienced snorkelers and did not have a problem - the youngest was 11. Not sure if you did not stay in this area, where you would park to access the beach, but perhaps another review answers that! Hope this review helps someone!

We stayed at a condo on Half Moon Bay. The view was very nice and we had a nice breeze. Snorkeling is good here. Swimming is a little bit of an issue because it is shallow. You also need water shoes to get in as there is broken up coral that gets washed in from the outer reef. We like the laid back atmosphere

We always stay on half Moon Bay while we visit Akumal. While it might be a little more difficult to access, it is a virtual aquarium. While Akumal Bay is getting the snorkle tours and is getting crowded to the point that it is losing some of it's charm, HMB is just the opposite now. The beach is uncrowded and the snorkling is outstanding. You can access HMB from La Buena Vida if you aren't staying in one of the many condos and casitas that line the shore although if you have the chance give them a try you won't be disappointed. Most of the time you might be the only people in the water.

Nice beach with rocks & sand. Snorkeling was challenging in February which we learned was the windy season. Of course it settled down the day before we were leaving. Lot of fish to see but need to be an experience swimmer to go out where the best coral is that has the most fish.

You will not feel crowded here. Great bay area with typically beach for the area. Just have a snack or drink at La Buena Vida and then walk a few hundred yards to the left for your own private beach area.
