The Reef Condominiums

I have stayed at Reef A in Akumal numerous times because the location can't be beat, the property is well maintained, the price is extremely reasonable and the accommodations are comfortable and beautiful. I can't imagine a more perfect place for a vacation. The sliding glass doors open onto the beach where you can snorkel with turtles and exotic fish in the calm sea. It is exquisite! Reef A is well furnished with native art and artifacts. The owner, Gloria, created an amazing mosaic of the sea in the bathroom. You must see it! The kitchen is well stocked so you can cook your own meals after buying food at the Saturday/Wednesday outdoor market - or walk down the beach to many quaint restaurants. I love this property and highly recommend Reef A.

Room Tip: Reef A provides a prime location to access the sea and is comfortably and artistically furnished.

We got into Akumal late in the evening, after a long day of travel. Since it was the offseason we had not booked a hotel, but being so late everything was closed. We inquired with a night watchmen, who sent us to La Bahia. The manager there, who was off duty, warmed greeted us, and made a room available at The Reef. The next mornning I was pleasantly surprised to see our condo was right on the beach. The condo was just right for a couple, and provide many of the comforts of home.

Akumal, which means turtle in Mayan, is a beautiful village/condo community far from the bustle of Playa del Carmen. It lived up to it name, as we snorkel with huge, beautiful hawksbill turtles just off the beach!

We have been visiting Akumal, Mexico for the last few years. Luckily on our last visit we found the accommodation that we consider to the nicest and best valued... The Penthouse at The Reef. This 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom condo is a piece of paradise that we will continue to visit for years to come. It is directly on the beach with an amazing private deck with Caribbean views. We would get up early each morning to have a coffee and watch the turtles frolic about. After a full day of scuba diving, snorkelling, and other fun activities, we would usually end the day making good use of the supplied BBQ on the 2nd private deck that overlooks the Mayan Jungle at sunset.

Location of The Penthouse is ideal. Scuba shop is a 5 minute stroll down the beach, great snorkelling right down the stairs, many great restaurant choices all within a 5 – 15 minute beach walk, and easily accessible by car....Playa Del Carmen, Tulum Ruins, XCaret Eco-Park and many other fun places.

Kitchen is fully stocked with all the equipment one would require. We stop in Playa Del Carmen and do a week’s worth of shopping so that we don’t have to eat each of our 3 daily meals out at a restaurant. We usually eat out at least once per day, but will eat the other 2 meals in the luxury of The Penthouse's kitchen and dining areas overlooking the Caribbean.

Nothing could be easier than booking directly with Don the owner. He is a very honest, reliable and helpful person. We have not met him in person but consider him to be one of our Amigos. He is fair in his pricing and is more than happy to help out in any way possible. He has always been very quick to reply to any of our emails.

If you searching for your little slice of paradise I recommend that you start your seach at www.reefpenthouse.com

After searching and researching many places to stay in Akumal on Half Moon Bay, we found the Penthouse on the Reef. If anyone is researching a stay in Akumal, search no further. The Penthouse would not disappoint even the most pampered among us...

The Reef Condo complex consists of 6 units, including the Penthouse which takes up the entire 3rd floor. The Penthouse is where my family of six stayed for 10 nights at the end of January and first part of February.

The Penthouse is large, with the bedrooms separated by the living room, dining room and full kitchen area. Each room has its own bath, and every room comes with a breathtaking view. The Reef Condominiums are so close to the beach, that when we sat on the balcony of the Penthouse (which is the width of the entire condo complex), we felt like we were on the deck of a cruise ship, overlooking the unbelievable turquoise water.

The condo was clean and included daily maid service. We cooked and grilled some of our meals in the condo, and did not have to worry about cleaning a single dish. We went out for most of our meals, and ate at many good restaurants in and around Half Moon Bay and Akumal, all of which were within walking distance.

We snorkeled directly in front of the condo and saw a variety of fish, turtles and rays. A highlight was a Manta Ray (at least 6 ft. wide). Anyone that is looking for a place to snorkel, look no further ... the convenience of snorkeling right out your front door can't be beat.

The area of Half Moon Bay is quiet and quaint, consisting of condos and villas with no resorts, so the beach is not overcrowded and it sometimes felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves.

We highly recommend staying in the Penthouse on the Reef. As soon as you walk through its large double doors, you'll be glad you did.

Having stayed in many places in Akumal for the past 20 years, the Penthouse at the Reef is our favorite. The unit is oriented parallel to the beach, so all rooms face the ocean to the east and the jungle to the west. Lots of outdoor balconies on both east and west as well for viewing both sunrise and sunset. Third floor at top of building is private and quiet. Owner is American living in Mexico and has lots of great tips for appreciating the local culture.

We stayed in THE PENTHOUSE of the Reef Condos. There were six adults and we found it very spacious. There are two bedrooms (1 King and 2 double beds), 2 bathrooms and a large living area. The balcony is huge and overlooks Half Moon Bay. Though there were 6 adults we never found it crowded. The staff is wonderful. It is a 15 minute walk to Akumal Beach and a variety of good restaurants. If you don't want to snorkel in front of the condo, for a change you can make the 10 minute walk to Yal Ku Lagoon. If you have a vehicle, there is parking right behind the condo. It is a wonderful place to holiday.

Your first words as you open the door to the Penthouse at the Reef will be Ahhhhhhhh...... Every room with breath taking ocean views. I've stayed in the Penthouse probably 6 or 7 times and it is always our first choice for an Akumal trip. It spans the entire 3rd (top) floor of a low rise condominium unit, with the most spacious balconies running the full length of the unit both ocean side and jungle side. Plenty of lounges, tables and chairs to enhance your outdoor experience. Morning coffee on the ocean side to greet the sunrise, and a cocktail on the jungleside for sunset views. Indoor decor is lovely and comfortable, with interesting art pieces from the local area and the owner's other travels.

Whenever we first arrive we run to the balcony to see how long it will take to spot a turtle in the water below. 35 seconds on our last trip! You snorkel with them from the beach in front of the condo, or beautiful Yal Ku lagoon is just a short walk away.

The bedrooms occupy opposite ends of the unit (both with spectacular views and access to the balcony), providing extra privacy for 2 couples, or quiet from the Kids. If you like to cook, you'll find a well supplied kitchen and an outdoor barbeque. If cooking is not your thing several great places to est are walking distance away.
