We stay right down the road from El Castillo for three months every year. They make the best Mango Crepes I've ever had. Gabby is a great cook. Their specialty is sea food made inside of pineapple and coconut and a mango fish mixture.
I have never stayed the night at the hotel but the beach is beautiful and clean.

We had a very good time in the hotel: the people are very friendly, the food delicious, we had all the beach for our own and the sea is amazing. A little bit of sea grass, but that doesn't disturb. It's a family business and they have the most funny dog I've ever seen. Really a place to relax, also good for divers.

We were three families of 12 people traveling on Norwegian cruise lines with a port of call in Costa Maya. We got off the ship and took a van ride (arrange with your driver to take you back to ship) to this quaint beachside resort for the day. It seemed like long ride because the roads are bumpy but we could see the cruise ship in the distance. We asked for a flat rate for the day including all you can eat and alooholic drinks for $30 ($15 for children). The food was delicious and the drinks were local beer and fresh fruit blended cocktails. The beach was crystal clear blue water with a gentle sloping sandy entry with no rocks. The kids figured out how to knock coconuts off the trees to break them open for fresh coconut milk. We played volleyball on the beach, sunned in the comfortable beach loungers and eat and drank our fill. There are restrooms and showers. Bring your own towel. Peter and Gabby we very welcoming. I highly recommend this beach day trip if you are coming from the cruise ships to avoid the masses of passengers that get off and crowd nearby beaches.

fantastic beach in a small hotel. Great food including fresh fish and grear desserts selfcooked in a Wienese way. Not luxurious but very sweet rooms with charm. If you are NOT into touristy traps can only recommend. We will be back. Claudia and David

It was obvious from the shape of the room that house keeping had not been there in a while. There was a wasp's nest dried to the curtains, which my husband brushed off. The crumbs remained on the floor for the entire stay, as in no house keeping at all. Also a drainage problem in the shower, the whole place was damp as the water ran out of the raised bathroom into the bedroom. The linens on the bed and for the shower were really not acceptable. The wind dies at night and you will find it hard to sleep, but it is doable. The state of the room is really most the problem and the lock on the door is laughable. They turn the electric on and off as they please, though they claim there is a schedule. Not really hot water... Nice beach, but also just as nice in closer to the town and other accommodations. The sad part was the owner was completely a jerk a when we told him we were leaving. We ate money to get out of the situation but it was so worth it. Just do not stay here... other places have better amenities at the same price

We were driving south from Mahahual towards Xcalak along the shore road, looking for a nice place to stop for lunch, catch some rays on the beach, and swim in the clear blue waters. We happened upon Hotel El Castillo and couldn't have been more thrilled with our find! At the time of our trip, the establishment was just opening for business after Hurricane Dean's damage the year before. We asked if we could enjoy their beach and have lunch even though we were not guests at the hotel, and the proprietor, Peter Ruhry, was happy to accommodate our request. The staff couldn't have been more gracious and friendly. We ordered a delicious lunch, which was brought to us on the beach as we relaxed in the sun. We swam in the water right off the beach - unusual amongst many natural beaches in that area. We spent a lazy few hours sunning, swimming, and eating before continuing on our way. We could have even played volleyball, as there was a net right on the beach. What a hidden gem!

El Castillo is the most amazing, gorgeous beach in all of Costa Maya. The property has a good energy feel and very laid back. the beach is swimmable, wide and clean. The food is excellent with fresh fish, seafood and mexican specialties. The rooms are peaceful, just right!
