We traveled to Almaplena aboard the Carnival Dream. I'll admit, the cab ride was a little scary due to traveling so far into the middle of nowhere. OMG! was the ride worth it!!!!!!

Upon our arrival we were greeted immediately and asked when we wanted to go back. Um, do we have to?!?! We were brought inside and shown where the bar and dining area were as well as the showers and restrooms. Then we were shown the beach chairs and were told to pick anywhere we like. The next question was "what would you like to drink!!"

We picked chairs right on the water and our drinks arrived, and arrived, and arrived and...well you get the picture. When it was time for lunch they called us up to eat and provided us with some of the best food we've ever eaten, and oh yeah, more drinks!

We snorkeled the reefs which were huge and beautiful. I was very impressed with the snorkeling and would say it was the best of our trip. The staff was so friendly and went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. WE WILL BE BACK!!!

We visited Almaplena last week when were in Costa Maya on the NCL Epic.
The booking process was easy and efficient.
We got the taxi as instructed and it took about 25 minutes to reach the beach, We were greeted by the owner and shown the facilities.
The beach was lovely and quiet. As an AI, everything was included so we didn't need to worry about paying for anything extra. We spent the day relaxing in the sun. We would definitely go back if ever in Costa Maya again.

My husband and I booked the day excursion at Almaplena Eco Beach Resort prior to leaving home for Costa Maya as one of our stops this week on the Norwegian Jewel. I had read reviews on Cruise Critic and TripAdvisor and they all seemed positive. We love the places with no crowds.....and this place definitely delivered. You walk outside of the port area and the taxis are on the right and you tell them you need one that has an agreement with Almaplena ( as transportation is included in the fee as well as drinks, food and beach loungers). There is about a 20 minute taxi ride and I did not think the roads were bad at all as some people had reviewed them to be very rough. The beach is just beautiful with the soft powder sand and easy walk in to the water. There is some seaweed which is to be expected but the water was clear even thought it was windy with some high waves that day. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. It was wonderful to have no vendors trying to sell their wares. There were 3 others couples there when we were for the day.The food was really good...fresh guacamole and chips, first round we were served 4 chicken tacos, then 4 shrimp tacos then 4 beef tacos...too much food for us to eat, but it was all good and fresh with wonderful homemade soft tortillas. The only downside the day we were there was that the showers were not working and they were doing repairs, but I filled a water bottle at the outside sink and washed the sand and saltwater off before we left. My husband and I cannot wait to return here as this has been the best excursion we have done in some time. The owners offer a great beach day at Almaplena!!!

We were on the NCL Jewel In March of 2014. Had been to Mahahual a couple of times before and was very disenchanted with the beaches on the main strip. Crowded, vendors harassing you and a not so clean beach. We found Almaplena on Tripadvisor and Cruise Critic and were so happy we made the choice to go! Took a 20 minute cab ride which Almaplena paid for and to get back too, unbelievable value. Transportation and an all inclusive. We arrived to a wonderful staff and were already set up on the beach with lounge chairs. 7 Ladies who love the beach, and we this beach is beautiful..white sand and crystal waters! The owner Monica and her beautiful baby daughter Sophia stopped by to chat and you can tell she was generally interested in meeting her clientele and wanting their experience to be the best you can have. Had a delicious lunch and more drinks then we needed. Overall the best stop on our trip..hopefully will be back again!

We decided to book a day excursion at Almaplena Eco Beach Resort while visiting Costa Maya for the day on an NCL Epic cruise. It turned out to be my favorite excursion of the trip. Taxi, drinks, food, loungers and leisure all included! Beach is beautiful! Resort is clean and quaint and quiet. The service was outstanding! Would love to go back and stay at the resort. Highly recommend this hidden gem!!!

We stayed 18 days (Monica thought it was a mistake when she saw the booking) and the place exceeded our expectations. We especially liked
- the large quiet beachfront access room with a huge comfortable bed and simple but tasteful decor which stayed cool overnight thanks to the ceiling fan and large screened windows which let in the oceans breezes
- the beautiful clean beach with plenty of access to shade and lounge chairs
- easily accessible large coral reef with no sign of damage like that at so many of the coral reefs we've seen lately
- Good breakfast (included in room fees juice coffee granola and fresh fruit are all we ever wanted)
- Restaurant has an excellent menu (not a large menu but what they do have is always tasty and the pasta dishes are very nice, especially the spaghetti) at a very good price. Monica and Andrea made us a special meal with rice and beans (we were craving them) so if you ask in advance, it is possible to get something made for you that is not on the menu (they also cooked up a very large fish for us which we loved and that was also not on the menu. Also, the drinks are very well priced and the wines although not 5 star, they were all (even including the Mexican ones) very palatable and exceptionally well priced! Mahuhaul is a 20 minute drive on the beach road and has a number of very good restaurants I especially recommend the Nochoch Kay (Large Fish) restaurant which is very well priced and has excellent salsa.
- Monica, Andrea, and our waiters Hugo and Gabriel were all so friendly and always had a ready smile and will deliver drinks to your beachside lounge chair or deck hammock (we were served fresh coconut juice one day and later sliced coconut with salt and lime - delicious!!!).
We are birders and the birding along the beach road and on the road to Xcalak was very rewarding (we would get up very early to go birding and be back in time for breakfast) and we recorded an amazing number of species including great black hawk, common black hawk, roadside hawk, 3 kinds of vultures including the king vulture (a beautiful bird), frigate birds, pelicans, osprey, groups of small shorebirds along the beaches, a group of 8 Aracari (a very colourful toucan), parrotts and parakeets, 3 different kinds of woodpeckers, 4 different kinds of orioles, a pygmy owl, chachalaca, squirrel tailed cuckoo, Yucatan crows, cinnamon hummingbird, kiskadees, flycatchers, eastern kingbirds, grackles along with a group of capibaras, several Yucatan foxes and a lot of wonderfully varied lizards. Just outside of Xcalak on the north side of the paved road there is a lagoon which held an incredible variety of water birds including roseate spoonbills, 3 kinds of ibis, the common wood stork, 3 kinds of heron, great and snowy egrets, kingfishers, terns and ducks (black bellied whistling and blue winged teal were 2 we id'd).
Almaplena is relatively isolated (which is why we chose it), a great place to relax and can be used to stage excursions to Bacalar, Chetumal, and the archaeological ruins close by (we did 3 excursions: Chacchoben ruins and Bacalar 1 day, Chetumal and Kohunlich ruins another, and a very long day to the wonderful ruins at Calakmul (we saw 2 groups of spider monkeys plus several oscillated turkeys and an amazing sighting of a pair of the rarely seen Great Curassow there).
A rental car is the way to go, we took the bus to Lemones (cost us $500 mxp to get from Lemones to the resort by taxi) and ended up renting a car in Chetumal and had to take the bus back to Playa del Carmen (could have saved money by renting a car in Playa del Carmen as it is much cheaper rates there). Our thinking was that we wanted to just hang out the first week so we thought it better not to rent the car until later on and we thought we could rent one in Mahahual which turned out to not be available (less cruise ship traffic lately has caused some cutbacks in Mahahual I think).
We brought our own snorkel gear, I recommend you do the same. We were worried about bug bites and brought bug dope. We put on bug dope only on our early am birding outings (bugs were only a problem early in the morning and in the evening on the beach).
