“true eco resort but luxurious”
Reviewed 14 November 2008

Balamku is the perfect eco hotel that is luxurious. We stayed for 2 nights last July 08 and loved it!!! You can feel good about traveling because the hotel uses wind and solar for power, has composting toilets (you would never know, it's not like they smell or anything), collects rain water, and uses gray water for plants. Our room was HUGE and very private with a huge patio overlooking the ocean. We are a family of 2 adults and one son (age 7) and we could have stayed there for weeks. The owners are so kind and the beach was so nice. We had it to ourselves for 2 days. They include a delicious fresh breakfast with the room and kayaks (good ones, unlike other places we stayed at). We truly enjoyed our stay and was completely worth the long drive from Cancun. We will return and hope that they teach other hotels how to be green and still have luxury.

My boyfriend and I intended to stay here for 3 nights towards the end of our holiday in mexico, and ended up staying 5! It is the most beautiful place.

The setting is amazing the beach (with hammacks for laying in), the clear sea with the reef 200 M offshore (you can borrow kyacks and scuba gear from the owner, and it is well worth the 15 minute paddle). The rooms are lovely, spacious, well decorated and also everything is eco friendly so you are doing no damage to this lovely place. Then the owner Alan is so helpful and welcoming you feel at home straight away.

We really did feel like we had found a little piece of undiscovered paradise (with a lot less tourists than Tulum). I would advise anyone going to Mexico to stay here, and hope to return myself.

One tip though, the closest ATM is 1 hour away so take enough cash to stay longer than you are planning, so like us you can stay that extra few days!

We soon called Balamku "Heaven on Earth". Carol, the owner with her husband Alan, made our stay there ever so precious. Balamku's rooms are spacious and beautiful with several windows looking at the sea which glows with shades of blue beyond words. Free Kayaking to a gorgeous reef. Now that we are back home, we prepare ourselves a "Balamku Breakfast": a delicious mixture of home-made ganola, organic mango and yoghurt!

Yet the one thing that maybe impressed and inspired us most, is Balamku's commitment to their environment. The hotel is using alternative sources of energy (wind and solar), compost toilet (we know it sounds suspicious, but it is truly the same), recycling and much more.

Carol helped us discovering the rest of Mahahual and the area. She recommended us a wonderful diving instructor named Sharif (from Blue Ocean). He is experienced, calm, patient. I have dived with plenty of instructors and dive masters before and feel comfortable to attest that Sharif is one of the best of them all. My partner is just making his first fins-steps underwater, so it was a great to have someone as reliable and supportive as Sharif.

A short walking distance from Balamku is Mr Rene's wonderful empenadas as well as another restaurant called Travel In. Wonderful food here too! Strongly recommend the Mango Curry!

Sergio is one of the local cab drivers (taxi 106), who took as far as Bacalar (a breathtaking laguna). Always having his big smile on.

Mahahual is a tiny but very special place and is surprisingly intimate and personable. If you are open to it and welcoming it, you will discover a group of real people and stories. For us that alone made Mahahual and the traveling experience worth it.

Sadly we had to leave. But Mahahual, Carol and Sharif and the rest gave us a wonderful set of memories. We will surely make our way back to Mahahual one day.

We just visited Mexico and had a great time at Balamku in Mahahual. We just turned up and luckily got the last room which was the best room we had had in Mexico, clean, huge and right on the beach. The owner is very friendly and helpful and rents out snorkeling gear and lends out kayaks. A great place to spend a few days relaxing.

This is the best value in Mexico. Not only are Carol & Allan serious about minimizing their environmental footprint (unlike many places in this area that pay lip service) they have done it in such a way that guests suffer no discomfort whatsoever. The rooms are airy, spacious and comfortable, if they were any closer to the beach, you would be submerged. They really have thought of everything - right down to a drying rack for wet clothes. (Unfortunately we happened to be there during a tropical storm so the drying rack got a work out )
Allan was a concerned and accommodating host. The included breakfast was wonderful ( I would like the recipe for the homemade granola) and I really wish the locals had backed off on the sacrifices to the rain god Chac because It would have been superb kayaking and snorkeling around the reef that is only a few hundred meters off shore. The location is only a few kilometers from the town of Mahahual that has an almost completed and lovely Malecon. There are many good restaurants - please try The Roots for superb Italian food and Marteo & Monica's effusive welcome.
Just a few minutes walk is the Travel In which serves great food at good prices and immediately feels like home. Justa and Albert have many wonderful stories to tell about their colorful lives and it's a relaxing place to sit oceanfront for hours and slide down a few Margheritas. We look forward to going back (perhaps a bit earlier in the season this time) and lolly gagging in the hammocks with a bit of beach combing on the side. It's a bit of a hike from Cancun but once you are there, you really don't need to be anywhere else.

We agree with the recent reviews of Balamku. It is wonderful and relaxing place. We just want to give some additional information. It is possible to come here without a car. There is a direct bus to Playa del Carmen which workes fine. The local bus drops you off just at the gates of Balamku. Just bring food for lunches and snacks so you don't need to go to Mahahual village every day. We stayed here with our two children (7 and 9 years) for 5 nights. If your kids needs activities and poolgames to be happy you shouldn't go here BUT if you like to spend time together, playing at the beach, kayaking, snorkeling, watch the stars and fireflies at night, read books together and play cards this is a truly wonderful place. It is just a short walk to the lovely restaurant Travellers Inn which serves superb food.

We have travelled a lot and this is one of the places that we will keep as a warm, unique memory. We would really love to come back for a longer stay. Thank you Carol for sharing your lovely place with us!!!

We just stayed at Balamku for five nights. Although we arrived with some trepidation due to last August's hurricane, the overall experience was absolutely fantastic. Balamku itself is one of the most restful places I've stayed. Carol's breakfasts were delicious, the room was comfortable, and the hotel's true eco-focus is comforting.

Mahajual itself is a fascinating experience. It's true that there is plenty of damage in the immediate area from Dean, but the upside was that there were very few other tourists around. The town's business owners are friendly and eager to please visitors. There are a lot of great places to get food, including Mexican and european. It's a great get away.
