Hostel La Candelaria was great! It's clean, friendly, and has the most amazing backyard garden/kitchen and hangout spot.
Valladolid is a wonderful little town -- very pretty, very safe. The hostel is in a great location, and it's easy to get to the cenotes and the ruins. The one difficulty that I had was trying to figure out how to make my way from Valladolid into Guatemala. The front desk staff had no idea, but luckily they did have a computer. And the folks at the bus station in town were also very helpful. I was traveling alone and my spanish was very shabby, but I still managed to make my way.
The town is filled with upper class, polite, religious people who are using laptops and cell phones and ignoring the tourists like me. Not a single drunk or homeless person on the street. Children and ladies and lots of foot traffic at 9PM for unknown reasons. There are lots of stores filled with dollar store-type of crap that are open, but do not seem to have a single customer. No bars that i can detect. This was the second place that I stayed on my solo travel, so I asked the desk staff if it was safe to walk the 8 blocks and he said yes, so i did and it was totally safe to wander the streets alone (even at night). I would stay here again, definitely.
