We stopped in Valladolid on our way back to Cancun from Chichen-Itza. We had planned to spend a little time exploring, but unfortunately our rental car broke down as soon as we got into town. We were having lots of trouble trying to contact the rental service with our cell phone and were quite frantic, and a gentleman at the Convent suggested that the tavern had a telephone we may be able to use. Not being familiar with the area, particularly the concept of "big things behind tiny doors", it would have never occurred to us to stop at Taberna de los Frailes had we just been walking around seeing the sights. We are sure glad we did!

First, the two waiters and particularly the hostess (sorry, we do not remember your names) who helped us get in touch with our rental service and eventually replace our car could not have been more friendly and willing to help. They saved our vacation from total disaster!

We honestly hadn't planned to have lunch, but since it was a 2-3 hour wait for our car and they had been so helpful, we decided to give them our business. Lunch was wonderful and the open-air garden just outside the convent walls was absolutely beautiful. We needed to eat light, so we shared a few appetizers. The food was fresh, interesting and tasty. The service was exceptional. Wished we had room for more!

This all happened in the 2-3:00 timeframe, and the place was empty. We certainly hope they are busier during standard lunch and dinner times, because Taberna de los Frailes was truly an exceptional experience. The food, atmosphere and staff helped turn a very trying day into a not-so-bad one!

(and, for the tourists out there - they had very nice restrooms as well!)

On the way from back from chichen itza to cancun, we decided to visit Valladolid. Other then expected, it looked more like a rustical place, so we gave up any hope to find a beautiful place to eat, when we saw a small entrance at the taberna de Los frailes. Situated right at the main square, next to the church, this taberna is a beautiful, inspired restaurant with delicious Mayan cuisine. We tried the mezcal and had a delicious lunch. We paid around 60 dollars for two. Photos to follow.

Although it's on the higher end for Valladolid, the service and food are well worth it. We loved the Pook Chuuk and Tikin Xic, beautifully presented, delicious traditional Mayan dishes. The waiters were friendly and attentive. We didn't love the music selection, but you can't have everything!

On a recent trip to Chichen Itza we decided to spend the afternoon in Villadolid. I saw the reviews on Trip Advisor for Taberna de los Frailes and made a point to have lunch there. This restaurant has so much character and charm. The setting is so relaxing and comfortable but the food was incredible. The menu was filled with very interesting selections that made it very hard to pick. Our group of four shared the grilled watermelon which was delicious. Then the main courses of shrimp, fish, stuffed chicken breast and tamale’s all of which we loved and then desert of lemon cake and coconut cream. The Mayan Yucatecan food was wonderful, the service was top notch, and the setting is just what you need to relax while on vacation. Don’t miss the opportunity to eat at such a unique and wonderful restaurant.
