“Yikes - this place is horrible”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

We left a beautiful place in Merida on our way to Chichen Itza and stayed in Valladolid for a night. We thought we would not spend a lot, so we decided on a place that got good reviews and was inexpensive. DON"T GO!! It was dank, musty and horrible. We paid cash unfortunately and had to call the website where we made on-line reservations to speak with the manager as she wasn't going to give us our money back. It is worth spending $20 more and staying on the plaza in Valladolid. We were able to get our money back after an hour of arguing, but so happy we didn't stay there.

This hotel,is located right near the city center and is inexpensive. However, mad the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The room we were checked into smelled musty, the air condition didn't work, and some of the lights were out. There also were stains on the walls. Most of the rooms with two double beds really aren't large enough for two beds. In fact, the second bed is crammed in a corner at the foot of the the other bed. In fact we ended up leaving and not staying the night. This place feels like the kind of hotel you stayed at of spring break in Mexico as a poor college student. I would not stay here unless you are really on a tight budget and can't find anything else.

Clean, beautiful courtyard, pool, and rooftop lounge. Good location, easily walkable to the main square, bus station, and food. Makes a good base for visiting Chichen Itza. Smelled a little musty when we walked in, and water leaked in through the bathroom window every time it rained, but who cares, it isn't supposed to be the Hilton. We loved valladolid...such a great town, a great place to get a good slice of real Mexican life. Walk around the square at night, have lunch at the loncheria, go & enjoy.

Pro: Low price
Con: Everything else
We paid when checking in, before seeing the room. Immediately went back to the front desk to request a refund and leave. Nobody was at the desk, it was about 2:00 pm. After searching the hotel, I found the front desk person cleaning a room. She spoke enough English when we checked in and she took the cash, but then suddenly spoke no English when we expressed disappointment with the room. Granted, the price is low, but it is well worth an extra $20 to stay at a hotel where a/c works, and where some kind of service is provided after they get your cash. If you are ok with delapitated rooms that are marginally clean at best, stay here for the low price. If you enjoy light, a/c, and/or a clean room, do yourself a favor and pay an extra $20 to stay someplace else.

The place was decent enough for a one night stay. Place was clean and spacious enough. The design was very nice with the pool in the middle of all the rooms. The rooms were old though, and quite dark.

Staff spoke minimal English but seemed to understand us most of the time. They were also nice and tried to answer all of our questions.

The location was good enough, just about 2 blocks from the main square.

There was also free parking next to the building.

For the price we paid, not going to complain.

We used to stay in the Hotel Meson del Marques each time we came to Valladolid,..until we got ripped of once and then found The Colonial Aurora " Hotel.
Nice , Clean , in the middle of Valladolid, just 1 Block away from the Mainsquare and at about half the price of the Meson del Marques.
It doesnt have a Restaurant, but there are plenty of nice Restaurants in walking distance.
Make aReservation online or by phone,..since they only have 20+ rooms it fills up fast.
We have stayed there at least 15+ times and contunue to return again...and again...

Room Tip: take a groundfloor so you can get from the pool directly to your room,....

We had a very pleasant stay at La Aurora. Unfortunately due to airline delays we arrived much later than expected. The night desk person didn't speak English and wasn't sure where our reservation was, but we eventually figured something out & everything was resolved in the morning. The hotel itself is beautiful from the building to the furnishings, very colonial feel. The showers and air conditioning were a great treat after spending the day in the heat. We rented bikes from the front desk and got directions to the area cenotes. The bus station and everything else in the city was an easy walk. The room walls are on the thin side so we heard plenty of conversations as people walked by and the rooster next door in the morning. Didn't remember about the rooftop terrace until just now, wish we had checked it out. For some reason my confirmation said they serve an included continental breakfast, no true - but there is a good breakfast place two blocks down the street. It was a great hotel for our budget vacation, definitely recommend to someone with some Spanish experience.
