“beautiful property, lovely staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2014

We stayed at Casa Tia Micha for two nights in late February 2014, and it was the perfect place to start our exploration of the Yucatan. The buildings, room and gardens were lovely and relaxing, and the staff fantastic. We spent some time in the courtyard our second afternoon, drinking beers and chatting with the chef about the native green, chaya, which she was cooking into tamales for our breakfast the next morning (which was FANTASTIC). Room details below. Secured parking between the two properties. The second-floor terrace featured a bottle of Xtabentun Sosa (the local anise-flavored liqueur) and little glasses to try it with. We liked it so much we bought a bottle to take home. But really, I can't stress how friendly and helpful the staff was. It's a great hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite/Santa Ana. Clean, spacious and very comfortable. Plenty of hot wate...

We were very excited to stay in Valladolid - it is, after all, one of the Magic Cities in Mexico. We were mostly disappointed by Valladolid. Two exceptions: our B&B and El Meson Del Marques restaurant.
After a tiny mix-up with which room they put us in, we were good to go with our stay at Casa Tia Micha. They gave us a discount due to the mix-up. Good customer service! The parking is a little weird - it's a separate area from the B&B and you walk past a concrete wall with broken glass embedded in it to enter the B&B. Security is a big thing, even in the Yucatan. Kind of odd for those of us from the USA.
We loved our room and the breakfast was lovely. You sit in the garden and watched the hummingbirds zip around as they had a nest in one of the trees.
The town itself was only ok. The cathedral was very nice, but you have to pass the disabled poor begging near the doorways. There was an odd little VW bug driving around with huge speakers coming out of the roof. It seemed it was either blaring advertisements or obnoxious disco music. Very odd.
Just like all little towns in the Yucatan Peninsula, there were dogs all over. None are neutered and most look unhealthy and malnourished. We got in touch with Coco's in Playa Del Carmen and brought them some supplies and cash as they are a spay and neuter clinic. We felt better knowing there is such a place, but there are just so many sad dogs.

We had two goals for Valladolid: Ek Balam ruins and swim in a cenote. If you travel the Yucatan peninsula much, you'll see signs (most hand-written) for cenotes everywhere. But we wanted one that wasn't a huge tourist site. We asked our server at Casa Tia Micha and he told us to go to Agua Dulce, in Yalcoba (about 15 minutes from Valladolid). So we started with Ek Balam and enjoyed it very much (I wrote a review) and then we followed my iphone Google map for Yalcoba. We eventually found this small ranch and there is where we climbed down to the cenote. Amazing. Cold and refreshing and a bit freaky as you're underground with little bits of sunlight shining through holes in the ground.

I'll mention here, we also stopped at Izamal (another "magic city") on our way to Merida. Lovely convent, but there was loud disco music playing (and that annoying VW bug came to Izamal, as well) and it was hot and dirty. Signs for restaurants led us on a wild goose chase. Depressing town, in my opinion.

I stayed only two nights at this fabulous hotel and I can't say enough good things about it. The room was clean and quiet and the staff was the friendliest I have ever encountered. Nothing was too much trouble for them if it meant helping the guest in some way. I didn't stay in the main building, but in the annex down the street. The courtyard and covered breakfast area are pleasant at any time of day, and did I mention location? It is less than a block to the main square and around three blocks to the bus station.

This inn has 5 rooms, very comfortable, lovely courtyard, delicious breakfast, pool and wi-fi. We only stayed one night, but we will return the next time. Great value, friendly staff. When we came back to the hotel after dinner, we were treated to a complimentary liquor, a local beverage we hadn't tried. Very nice.

I usually take a grain of salt towards online reviews, but I felt compelled to write a good review for this gem. Our family of four with two children stayed two nights there. The room is spacious and comfortable. Internet WIFI was very reliable and fast, contrary to one earlier review. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The three-course breakfast is delicious, always come with fresh squeezed juice and gourmet coffee. The hotel location is very close to the town square and Cenote Zaci. We drove there, the staff took us to park the car at a gated court yard next door which provided peace of mind for tourist like us.

They gave away the "honeymoon suite" they had confirmed reserved for us. Instead they stuck us in a crappy little "standar" (sic) room with a tiny bathroom, moldy ceilings, furniture that was falling apart, a TV that would turn itself on spontaneously and at random at all hours of the night. The doors and windows don't close completely -- there are gaps all around them where you can see through to the courtyard garden.

Then they added insult to injury by trying to tell us this was actually a better room than the "honeymoon suite" they had confirmed for us.

In the middle of the night, the air conditioner first stopped cooling, and then a couple of hours later, erupted a few gallons (you read that right, a few gallons) of water onto the head of the bed where our daughter was sleeping.

Never ever had an experience like this in all our travels.

In the morning, we tell them we are going to leave and don't expect to pay. They agree, and then insist first that we pay for the previous night (i.e. when they gave away our room and put us in a small moldy room with an AC that quit working and spewed large amounts of water on our kid's bed) and our breakfast. Really?

After much arguing, they agree to charge nothing, but cannot refund to our credit card for unknown reasons, and go into a flurry of producing cash in a mix of MX and USD to give us the refund. But each time they claimed to have given us the right refund, they would snatch the notes back and give us another mix of MX and USD.

After the third time this happened, we just gave up. It turned out they had shorted us some $20-something dollars.

Worst of all was the attitude of the owners. They are great at pretending like they really care. But when it comes time for them to actually go to some effort to right their wrongs, their attitude is that it's their way or the highway.

The dishonesty and incompetence displayed by the owners was literally amazing. They really seem to believe that it's all a matter of spin doctoring, rather than living by their word.

We had a hellish experience here, and hope no other family has to go through what we went through at this place.

Run, don't walk, run away from here.
