“Simply Fabulous”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

We spent six glorious days at Casa Caracola and can't wait to go back. This was our third trip to Xcalak and our second stay at Casa Caracola. Giselle and Phillipe, the owners, are consummate hosts. Kind, knowledgeable, thoughtful, and loads of fun. Our daughters simply loved them, and their two dogs, Café and Tigre. Since our first stay at Casa Caracola, they purchased the lot next door and finished a gorgeous addition to their home. The design is beautiful with a lot of natural wood and a spiral staircase to the roof, giving the home the appearance of a shell, for which it is named.

The home sits thirty feet from one of the best snorkeling spots in Xcalak. Phillipe and Gisele know it well and were happy to take us snorkeling with them. Their caretaker, Teo was also great and took us all fishing for barracuda in the lake behind the house. If you are looking for a spot to relax, contemplate the ocean, and snorkel, there isn't any place better than Casa Caracola.

We just returned from spending six nights at Casa Caracola in Xcalak and could not recommend it more highly. The house itself is beautiful, large, and very well-appointed. The kitchen is light and well-equipped. The bedroom is comfortable with a spectacular view of the ocean. Living room and dining room are spacious with comfortable furniture. The rooftop terrace provides a superb view of the ocean to the east and a scenic lagoon to the west, with sunrise and sunset equally well seen. The house is impeccably cleaned each day. Most importantly, the owners are exceedingly generous with their time and recommendations. Philippe took us out snorkeling several times to ensure we had the best possible experience. His assistant Theo took us on a memorable boat ride through the lagoon. Ethernet-based high-speed Internet access is readily available to stay in touch with home or office. Overall, we felt extremely relaxed and well cared for the entire time. If you are seeking a very quite, stunning beach locale with excellent snorkeling/diving, you will be very happy here.

We have spent a week in mid-December in a wonderland named “Casa Caracola”. It was pre-xmas time in North America and we escaped to a paradise far from the real world. Gisele and Philippe, the hosts, are much more then nice and friendly. They become your friends the moment you arrive and treat you almost like family. They greeted us with a nice bottle of wine and invited us for dinner one night! If you want you can spend your time in absolute privacy but if you like to interact the hosts make it super easy. Philip spent a lot of time with us showing us where and how to snorkel in the riff and played volleyball with us. They gave us as much fresh coconuts and oranges as we could drink and overall were extremely accommodating.
We also kayaked in the lagoon. The barrier riff creates a calm enclosure of sea by the shore (about 300 meters), which is always calm and easy to swim in and snorkel. There are plenty of small mini-riffs populated with a variety of fish inside, so off-shore snorkeling is one of the best we have seen. The house is beautiful and is very thoroughly maintained. It is probably the best maintained house in the area. It feels like a new house. The bed is nice, the kitchen is well appointed. The large balcony overlooking the sea is the one to die for and the roof space upstairs has gorgeous views.
One need to buy groceries in bulk for the stay (it is better to buy everything in advance or during the excursions because fresh fruit is sold along 307 everywhere and the food trucks bring not the best produce (but OK if you need something). The bread keeps easily for 5 days in this climate, so it is a good idea to buy enough of bread and pastries before coming in. We also bought meets, cheese and dairy products. We did not bring eggs and that was a mistake. When you rent, Gisele gives you a very thorough and useful advice. It takes about 2 hours to reach the main highway and 3 hours to drive to Chetumal. It is about ½ hour to get to Xcalac, which has a few stores and restaurants. But we liked the house and the chance to get away from it all so much that we did not go there. If you are looking for a place to spent several days (or weeks) away from it all – this is the best choice!

This was my first visit to Xcalak...What a nice place off the beaten path to relax..best part of my vacation by far...We arrived to be welcomed by the owners who came out to help take the bags in the room and give us a tour of the property....The owners speak Spanish, English, and French... He is from France and she is from Canada they are such a perfect couple...He is a very hard worker always trying to make your stay better, more than helpful in anything we asked. A true gentlemen..She is a lovely lady to who was very friendly and welcoming..We were even invited to drinks and snack one night in there house and had a very entertaining conversation..They have two rooms and we did only see one but I'm telling you this what excellent apartment...has everything you need and great views..During my stay all I could think of is how perfect a place it would be to bring a family group for a nice stay...If your going to this town and the budget fits you go to this place no need to second guess your choice I guarantee you will be happy with your choice....so go book it right now if its available...do it!!....lol
I will be going back for sure whenever I have the chance I found my new happy spot.

Xcalak is the type of place to go for reading, relaxing, snorkeling, inexpensive dining, boating, a bird island and manatee tour ( with Geovani of Costa de Cocos) and sharing time with loved ones. We were fortunate enough to have chosen to stay with Gisele and Philippe, at Casa Caracola. This wonderful couple had a bottle of wine waiting for us in our top floor villa. They took us snorkeling out in front of their property at a lovely reef that runs the entire length of the beach. (miles!) We also had a great time playing with their two adorable dogs!
The villa was kept spotlessly clean. Everything we could have needed ( linens, towels, beach towels, cushions for the inside and outside chairs, snorkel gear, etc.) was provided. The view from the upstairs deck was peaceful and beautiful. We truly enjoyed having our breakfast every morning in the screened dining room. Since our 21 year old daughter joined us, our hosts made sure her futon bed in the living room was cozy, yet tucked out the main walking area. It was perfect!
We had trouble with our car rental ( 2x!) and had to have the car replaced! Our fabulous hosts were so kind when the replacement car arrived at 11:30PM...they were out front with my husband, interpreting with the car agency, and examining the car. They went above and beyond any expectations!
Our last evening was filled with a pleasant surprise of shared wine, conversation, and much laughter with 2 of the most wonderful people we ever met! We felt as if we were bonding with NEW family! We can't wait to return, and would CERTAINLY stay here again!

Xcalak isn't for everybody - relaxing, lots of nature, awesome snorkelling, sea and sun is what you'll get - no shopping or spas. Staying at Casa Caracola was perfect for us - a beautiful top floor of a house on the beach with amazing ocean views, and owned by a great couple who go out of their way, to ensure their guests are comfortable and have all that they need / want. We met Phillippe and Giselle on a previous trip to Xcalak and they invited us back but to next time stay at their place - we missed them as we were driving away and are planning our next visit back! Thank you both for the hospitality for the 10 days we were there.

This lovely and private apartment has a deck with gorgeous views of the ocean. The hosts are multilingual, and are gracious and welcoming. There is excellent snorkeling near the reef offshore, and there are kayaks and bicycles for guest use.
It takes some extra effort to get to Xcalak. There are no resorts or Senor Frogs. The independent traveler will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
We plan on returning when we can.
