“No wifi!”
Reviewed 8 October 2013 via mobile

We stayed here one night in September to break up a long drive home and to visit Whipsnade zoo. Having driven through Dunstable we were a bit worried about the location, the hotel seems totally out of place amongst the bookies, takeaway joints and pawnbrokers that litter the high street. It has a distinct medieval theme with rooms named after kings wives etc. The room was very nice and food was great, however the teenage staff were a bit clueless and the WiFi wasn't working Which is pretty poor for any hotel & my husband was quite annoyed. The response we got at reception was 'yeah I know it's bad isn't it?!'

Stayed here on business for two nights in a ground floor room which was very dark and quite depressing overall, clean but tired looking really.
The breakfast (£11,95 I think) was dreadful from start to finish. The waiter was miserable, and showed me to a used table for some reason then proceeded to clear and set it around me, there were many other ready tables so this was strange. A rack of cold toast was dumped on the table straight away and eventually a plastic thermal jug of coffee (allegedly!) arrived - managed to get a cup too on the second time of asking! The full English breakfast was awful including mushrooms swimming in grease, a little container of stone cold baked beans and a hash brown which was black inside with something that resembled mould.
This whole place is overpriced, and although Dunstable has little to offer in terms of hotel accommodation, the Premier Inn along the road is far superior.

We were attending a local sporting event were we unfortunately came a croper as my wife broke her collar bone and ended up in hospital. We stayed to compete and my wife stayed at the hotel for the duration of the weekend. The hotel staff were tip top and could not have asked them to have helped more and so friendly 5*, the service was excellent as was the food and rooms. But the room we had seemed to have super fine walls and ceilings, we were very unlikey that we had a couple at it the first night for 2 hours in the room above and when you have a 7 year old child asking why she can hear a dog wining it gets tricky. The next day the reception had had some complaints but this happens so I was happy to let it go. Unfortunately for us the next night we had two guys staying in the room above who came back from a pub around the corner at 3am and we were awoken by this, they proceeded to talk very loudly and laugh and joke, I had to call reception 3 times to get this sorted, I even threatened to go and sort it myself as they couldnt find the room the noise was coming from ??? its above me lol. They eventually phoned the room (which I heard the full conversation). They proceeded to use the bathroom and get in to bed, together and we had about 45mins of noisy sex before they fell asleep and started snoring! We had to be up at 6.30am! It was a weekend of hell but to be fair we were very unlucky I did get a refund for the the second night which the hotel were very apologetic about, it wasnt there fault but if you are a light sleep perhaps ask for a quiet room, then there is no excuse.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room perhaps on second floor with no one above you.

We stayed at this hotel a few years ago and to our delight, nothing has changed. Although the hotel was hosting a wedding reception and it was extremely busy, this did not interfere with our stay. Our bedroom was spotlessly clean and comfortable. We did ask for an extra towels, which were sent up to us straight away. We did not dine on this visit as we were taken out by our friends, but we did dine at breakfast, again very busy, but the food and service was spot on. We paid just under £100 for our stay, which i believe for a 4 star hotel is very good value for money. The service was excellent and we will be back again hopefully next year.

Positives: A good middle-of-the-road hotel. Clean, spacious room (145), lovely comfy bed, thick curtains, good-sized soft bath towels. Nice tray of teas, coffees, biscuits and gummy bears in the room. Nice to have the full range of papers in the morning for guests' use. Very good breakfast and good staff on reception for checkout. I had to ring down to reception at midnight about the loud noise coming from the room opposite - they sent someone up straight away.

Negatives: Spectacularly irritating music on the hotel website which can't be switched off! At the hotel itself, got off to a dreadful start - arrived to an empty desk, hovered until a man came, no eye contact let alone a smile, he asked my name but couldn't find my reservation even when I gave the reservation number and physically showed him the email confirmation. This wasn't the problem in itself, it was the fact that he went silent and scowled at the computer for long minutes, huffing at the inconvenience I was causing him. He eventually gave up and gave me a room that was free, clearly expecting me to leave then and very annoyed when I asked where the stairs were and when/where breakfast would be. Other negatives - bathroom a bit unloved, grout needs a good scrub and taps not labelled hot/cold and in need of a good dollop of cillit bang for a major descale. Other odd thing that the TV was wallmounted above the wardrobe so if you were sitting on the bed you could only see the top two-thirds of the screen. On return to the hotel in the evening had to walk through a wall of smoke as the smoking area is right outside the front door.

Overall, a decent stay for the money - I paid 49.00 for the room plus 11.00 for breakfast - but not sure would be worth it at full price.

We were staying for just one night. Attending a wedding locally at 2pm so we actually checked in at about 12.15, giving us time to leave the car in the car park and get a cab to the wedding venue. The lovely receptionist let us get into our room early and booked our cab, giving us time to have a very quick bite to eat in the bar/lounge which was comfortable and relaxed. We just had a sandwich and fries and a drink and it was beautifully presented and delicious and served by a very pleasant and friendly barman. Loads of newspapers available although we didn't have time to look at them. Didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that, but given the standard of the food in the bar, would be very surprised if it wasn't all one would expect from a very nice restaurant.

The room was lovely. Beautiful huge, very comfortable bed. Great Bathroom with an over bath shower that worked first time. Nice toiletries and robes. Lovely huge towels. Window that opened so it was lovely and fresh the whole night.

One very tiny minus point is the very very tiny claustrophobic lift to the upper floors. But given that it is probably a listed building, there's probably not a lot they can do about that. Doesn't detract from the 5 stars but worth mentioning for anybody that might find it, for some reason, a bigger problem.

WiFi was excellent and got online immediately with no issues.

We arrived here for one night to discover that inadvertently we had miss booked and got the wrong dates!!! The young man behind the desk was very nice and said don't worry we have room and found us avery pleasant room, beautifully clean. The bedding was fresh and clean, lovely soft towels and a nice modern decor. We had a very nice meal in the restuarant Henry's downstairs where once again the staff were very good, especially Ali who was particularly friendly. This is a very nice hotel where customer service matters and that matters to us so should we find ourselves in the area again we would definitely stay here again.
