“Good experience in the Chequers Apartment”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

We were attending my niece’s 18th birthday celebration and looking for somewhere local to stay in the Amersham area.
The Chequers in Old Amersham came up and I was interested in their one-bedroom apartment, which is situated across the road from the pub itself, and looked perfect for our requirements.
We weren’t disappointed. It comprised of a sitting/dining room with a kitchen, a bedroom and bathroom. There was also a small area outside to the rear of the property and a parking area to the front.
The place was well furnished and we were really pleased with it.
There was no noise at all, and although we were immediately next to a main road, we didn’t hear any traffic noise.
In the morning, breakfast was served across the road at The Chequers and it was beautifully presented and cooked well.
Only one point, of warning, there is very little in the way of equipment in the kitchen – I mean no saucepans, not much cutlery or plates – so if you were self-catering for longer than a night – be warned!
On the plus side, there is also a Tesco within two minutes walking distance – so you wouldn’t have to go far to get your shopping!
Would be a perfect base to explore the local area, or to commute into London.

Stayed at this hotel for the weekend of my dads wedding. It was not chosen by myself, and was booked on my behalf. We booked 3 rooms, and found nothing but problems from the start.

The 1st room was a twin single room, and has just enough room for single beds leaving only 6 inches in between and the "double" room i were staying in was just two single beds pushed together. On arrival 2 of the rooms were paid, and the owner (who didn't speak much english) overcharged both the rooms by an extra £4.00 a night. (Total of £16.00). If i hadn't of picked up on this he would have also overcharged me as well.

We stayed on the Friday / Saturday and we found that the pub was full of drunken / vulgar men of all ages. This is clearly the nightlife pub for the whole town and found that the party went on well into the early hours of the morning.

The breakfast was also overpriced, and the only women working/serving it spoke hardly any english and therefore struggled to help us. (May i mention the breakfast does not come within the overall price of the room). The rooms were small and hot and not comfortable at all. It is not extremely dirty but found there was quite a few cobwebs. This is not somewhere I would recommend.

We arrived at around 9AM on a Saturday and the manager allowed us to have keys for both rooms, although we could only access one as another group were in one of our rooms until 2PM. This meant we could go off in to London without worrying about checking in.

We stayed in the building next to the pub. The twin room bedding was amazing, lovely and different to the typical boring white/neutral colours! The towels also were lime green in one room and bright blue in another. If you like neutral colours, do not stay here!

The beds were realtively comfortable. However I personally did not sleep well; the walls are very thin and was awoken by another groups returning next door to us. Also, the windows do little to soften the sound of the road; it is however an older building so somewhat expected.

My main niggle was the smell of a cheesy, sweaty feet and smelly toilet in our double room. The twin however was fine.

So all-in-all, acceptable for a 1 night stay to get into London. From Amersham station you purchase a 1-9 travelcard for £12 (or £8.25 with 16-25 card). The Metropolitan line regularly serves this station and takes around 50mins to get in to London

Stayed here for a mid week break the rooms are small but clean but then again it is a fifteenth century building,. The food is good and plenty full. But it is used By contractors who seem to view any woman as fair game so not suitable for single women or friends traveling together.

If you are looking at this accommodation forget it. The rooms are tiny there are not enough towels, mugs, beverages. And they lock you out of the pub while they go out. There were nine people outside when the door was locked, and the lights turned off.

Room Tip: There probably are no good rooms, stay elsewhere

We stayed in a twin room not attached to the pub. When we arrived, they seemed concerned & confused, like they hadn't actually booked us in. The owner & staff did not converse with us about meal times or anything else. The twin room was very small, you have to be very intimate with who ever you are sharing with. Not much room to move, you have to shut the bathroom door to get in the shower & the wardrobe only opens one door because there is no room to open the other door. In the morning we had no electric & when we went to the pub to tell them, the immediate answer was " Sorry I no speak English"! Thankfully they fixed it for us, but we were not amused with their non communication with us. We were convinced the room was a converted toilet block. We didn't stay for tea or Breakfast!

Room Tip: The photo's of the rooms look really nice, just don't go for the twin room! Every time someo...

We stayed for 3 nights whilst visiting family. The rooms are accessed by a separate entrance at the side of the pub up a stsircase. The room was a good size with small TV, wifi, and tea/coffee making facilities. The en suite was Ok not much room. The rooms were cleaned daily. The walls are thin and on our first night we could hear someone as snoring through the wall.

On days 2 and 3 we returned to find our room door unlocked, which we checked was locked before going out. The landlord Chippy was most apologetic each day and said it was the cleaner who had not locked it. The external door was NEVER locked and the room door lock flimsy so we were a little concerned. Although nothing was missing (our valuables were not left in the room), we would have been happier if the external door was locked at all times. The accommodation can be accessed without anyone in the pub knowing. We will not be returning.
