“Superb Hotel”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

This hotel has charm, style and a lovely calm ambience. The staff are all exceptional - friendly, efficient charming and helpful and are a major contributing factor for a great stay. The rooms are well furnished and spacious, a nice selection of teas. coffee and bottled water and lovely large bathrooms.
The breaksfast selection is good and the food well cooked and presented - service very efficient. Restuarant food has a great seletion of specials, again well prepared and presented. Bar prices are competitive for a hotel. Location is ideal for exploring Bucks, Northants and Oxfordshire and the private parking is an added bonus.
Highly recommend a stay here - we were reluctant to leave and will definitely return.

Room Tip: First floor annexe rooms are a must.

We like this hotel very much. We have been twice and will be back again next month. Both the rooms we had have been large, well appointed and very comfortable. The food and service have been excellent. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Buckingham is a lovely town itself and there are lots of places of interest nearby. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, in fact we are bringing friends with us next time.

Like the town where it is situated the Villiers hotel has much that is best of England. Although in the centre of this market and university town, and in spite of 60 mph winds, our room was calm roomy and with exceppent reading lights. The whole hotel has a charm which is just the right side of fading. The restaurant offers superb value for imaginative, well cooked and presented English food. There could have been more variety at breakfast, but the full English and haddock were excellent. The gymn and swimming pool are also a mile out of town.

Booked this hotel for a surprise 80th birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. We were a large group of 28 and the food, although a little delayed in being served, was of an excellent quality and standard. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Our rooms were also all very comfortable and well appointed and I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel - it is charming and in a fantastic location. We were also impressed with the breakfast being freshly cooked and served nice and hot.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems ask for a room on the ground floor.

Booked as a post xmas period treat and on the basis of their 2AA rosette award. The greeting we received from the staff at reception was one of the best and friendliest we have ever received and augured well for our stay. The room we were allocated was extremely spacious as was the en suite
and both were fully appointed. So why not a 5 rating? Largely because of a couple of fairly minor niggles which didn't spoil our stay but potentially could have done so. Firstly we were staying early January although it was fairly mild when we entered our room felt it was slightly chilly. On examination discovered central heating was set at 5c. Fortunately we prefer a slightly cooler room but we did discover moving the thermostat to 15c to just take the initial chill from the room made no difference. Having said that we were by no means freezing and mention it purely for the hotel to check for guests who prefer a warmer room. The second concern regarded the food and was a major reason for choosing the hotel. When we went to the restaurant on the first night we were given a set menu and which bore no relation to the a la carte menu shown in our room or outside the hotel. It was a much more simplistic menu but again I have to say what we ordered was beautifully cooked and most enjoyable - it just didn't have the complexity of flavours we were expecting. When we asked at reception the next morning we were told that "this does sometimes happen and a la carte can't be offered." When we asked if it would be available for our second night they said they would check when the chef came in and if not available they would recommend a local restaurant. As it happens a la carte was available and we both agreed that the food we had that night fully justified their AA rating. So the only real gripe I have is that if a la carte is not going to be available diners should be informed in advance so that they can decide whether or not to take up their booking. Reading through this again it sounds like a lengthy complaint but I would like to reiterate that they are minor niggles and overall we were most satisfied with the hotel and it's excellent central location.

My darling wife has an incurable brain tumour - overseas holidays are out of the question, as she is uninsurable.

We now, once or twice a month have a mini break- mainly in the South of England as that is where we live. I tend to get most of our breaks through Travelzoo and to this date have not been disappointed.

After our stay in Basingstoke. We moved on to the Villiers Hotel in Buckingham where we spent 2 nights. The "disabled" room was fabulously equipped and 20 feet from the bar and dining room.. The food was great but most of all the staff were fantastic - they knew our situation - and were of a great help throughout our stay. I compliment the manager on the "team", I hate the word employees in a service industry.

The deal also included a visit to Bletchley Park - the code breaking centre which was fascinating.

A two night value deal including rosette food enticed us there in wintery November. The building was being renovated on the exterior, and the scaffolding came down during our stay.

Access was confused because of road closures, and it was luck and timing if one managed to get a courtyard covered car park or had to go to the overflow. Not a great hardship, unless raining hard!

The internal corridors in particular were in need of a refurb, or possibly just a bit of decoration, but the shabby chic look fitted the overall ambience quite well.

Our room was big, traditional and stylish. Quite pleasant to be in.

The restaurant food was interesting and tasty, and indee the cheese board was possibly the best I have ever tasted [in any country] with a delightful English selection and home made chutneys. Most of the rest was good or very good but hasn't stuck in the memory.

Unfortunately the service was not so laudable. It started well but the attention slipped after the initial burst of enthusiasm and it became a problem to attract attention and get the next course, order coffees etc. This is really an insult to the work and skill of the chef.

Breakfast was adequate but nothing special, and lacked Rosette touches like fresh baked rolls. Again the service attention waned and we had to chase up for coffees etc.

With a little attention to staff training, it could be excellent.
