Reviewed 9 October 2013

We returned for a second stay in sept, unfortunately the restaurant experience wasn't as good second time around.
It was a busy Friday night but having stayed previously on a just as busy sat night this shouldn't have been a problem,we were told it was due to a few changes on the menu which I find hard to believe.we waited almost an hour and the food was poorly cooked when it did arrive.
I doubt we shall stay again.

We stayed here before flying to the USA from Heathrow. On arrival we were welcomed by an interested and chatty member of staff who made us feel very welcome. Our room was large and comfy with a very clean ensuite. We ate downstairs in the restaurant in the evening and were served by enthusiastic and polite staff. In fact they moved us to a different table so we could have more room as I was seated behind a rather large lady! The car park was large and free. In fact the hotel was perfect for a night before a flight...good food, a comfy bed and peace and quiet. Will certainly book again .

On arrival we were welcomed by very nice friendly staff both on reception and in the restaurant. We had a lovely 3 course meal served by mo who again was lovely and friendly. The manager ( Indian guy) think his name was Ijaz was very helpful and went out of his way to help us and make our stay a wonderful experience probably the best we've ever had. The hotel room was nice spacious and clean just let down by a few minor maintenance issues but this did not affect our stay at all. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and this particular manager. Will be returning again and would highly recommend to friends.

Had a wonderful stay here at the Ethorpe,a fantastic warm welcome from a smiling receptionist on check in, the room was comfortable and what I class as a proper hotel, its such a shame reading not so pleasant reviews on comparing to the Hilton etc, not in the same class neither by looks or star rating as I believe this hotel is not a star rated hotel, but by far the most friendliest, a real home from home style with excellent facilities just a stone throw away! A great country style hotel and kept as it should be.

Perfectly comfortable, clean room, decent restaurant: fine for a couple of nights' stay on business.

The Ethorpe feels like a fairly old hotel, and it has its quirks. For example, I would not stay there in winter, given that the windows are single glazed. The sound-proofing between rooms isn't brilliant, and Heathrow airport's flightpath appears to be close by, hence if you're bothered by small amount of plane noise I would bear that in mind.

The bathroom in my room looked like it had been recently refurbished, but had been made to have the sink behind the door (that opened into the bathroom), whereas if it had opened the opposite direction it would have been far more convenient. The shower (over the bath) was made difficult to use (given that I'm tall) because of an overhang of about 30 cm in width, 30 cm in height (from the ceiling). This meant having to shower either squatting, or by bending my neck at an angle (made washing my hair entertaining). The shower curtain had been hung incorrectly, such that it could not be pulled all the way along the bath -- clearly no one had checked it worked. I ended up fixing it to avoid flooding the place. The other slightly irritating point was that the only toiletries provided were two soap dispensers -- no shampoo, which I would class as pretty poor.

On the plus side, free WiFi and free parking (you'll need to get a voucher from reception to display in your windscreen), and the attached restaurant serves decent pub meals. Breakfast was "OK", continental buffet (cereal, toast, a few pastries), or cooked English. Location-wise, very central, easy to walk to restaurants around the town.

All in all, it's a reasonable hotel for a couple of nights, but for the price it's not brilliant.

Nice location, easy safe parking, quick pleasant check in, nice room with aircon, old building with lots of stairs and steps and narrow corridors but loads of character. Evening meals and breakfasts were excellent. Five minute walk to main shopping street, and quite near to railway station. Will certainly stay here again. Good value.

We stayed at the Ethorpe in a family room for 3 nights ( originally booked for 2 but decided to stay an extra night). The lady on reception was very helpful & knowledgable. She gave us directions to church (family christening) & a timetable for trains in to the city. We had breakfast every morning - good selection of hot & cold choices to please all tastes. Evening meal was also good value with again a good selection of meals for a veggie, a meat eater & a child. Will definitely stay again when visiting family.
