“Could be awesome.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2012 via mobile

This hotel is set in a lovely location and really has a lot of potential. Dinner was innovator and definitely worth testing. If overall we had a very good time, the service was not on par with what you would expect from such a place.

After holding our wedding reception at Stoke Place we decided to hold our sons christening party there also, as the service, and level of care we received at our wedding was second to none and streets ahead of that we have had at friend’s weddings.

Our high expectations were not in vain as the service and level of care we received at the Christening was second to none. The staff are helpful, attentive and approachable and will go out of there way to help.

This is of course on top of the amazing décor and surroundings of Stoke Place. We would no qualms to recommend Stoke Place to friends and Family and look forward to holding much another party there in the future.

Lovely historic hotel and grounds. The room we had was amazing - with roll top bath and separate bathroom and masses of space (obviously we only stayed in one room so not sure what the others are like!). I'd imagine it would be a great place to get married although we were just there for a few days' stay. There's not a huge amount of facilities here but the grounds are lovely if the weather is good and you can just relax walking round the lake or on the lawns. The food was very good overall and the staff quite attentive. The local pub (Red Lion?) is also just down the road and is decent if you want to leave the grounds for a few hours / quick pint / slow walk home. Overall a relaxing and luxurious experience although it was quite expensive overall but generally well worth it. One downside we experienced: the heating was on full blast at all times throughout the hotel making the rooms upstairs quite hot.

We stayed here as part of a weekend away. The good things:

1. Received an upgrade on arrival. Our room was a good size, very comfortable with a great bed. We saw one of the rooms we booked and that was very small
2. Wonderful and beautiful building
3. The grounds are great with croquet and boules but also a great place to relax and enjoy the wildlife - deer and new born ducks
4. The tasting menu dinner was very good and the service at dinner was excellent

Detracting items
1. Bar service - very poor. You waited a long time and the staff seemed to struggle with either knowing what to produce or taking far too long to make. At one point we spoke to the bartender and told him we were going to play croquet and could they bring our drinks out? "Certainly, no problems". 90 minutes later they had not arrived even though we had checked in between. When we got back to the bar we were told that they had gone for a walk around the lake (the other side of the hotel).

2. Shower - ran out of hot water after about ten minutes which is not helpful when there are two of you in the room

3. Staff service - while we had a great experience at dinner. Breakfast was nowhere near as good with a surly waiter. We saw some of the staff who had been on our dinner the other night (so can only have had a few hours sleep).

Overall it was a good but flawed experience

The predominately English revues appear to reflect acceptance of standards somewhat less than we would expect in North America. Clearly we see things differently. I found this a very strange hotel from the keyhole of our room at two foot height to the temperature control which could only be seen with a torch, even with all the lights on. Quirky is ok and we get the attraction of a property hundreds of years old. In fact, the building is outstanding and the grounds an absolute delight.
It was cold and wet when we arrived. The heating was on. You could not put a hand on your radiator without being burned. Our room was stifling. We talked to reception who promised it would be adjusted while we were at dinner. At two am we lay on top of our bed, the windows wide open, sweating profusely. I saw the manager the next morning annd he immediately upgraded us to a suite at no extra cost, a suite with air conditioning. It worked, sort of. We had the sense that we were in an isolation ward with our air conditioning going flat out, day and night, to repulse the sauna-like heat emanating from the rest of the building.
The service was excellent if somewhat impeded by a general lack of English. I casually mentioned to a staff member that we didn't appear to get the newspaper we ordered. 'Yes, we will make up your room in two hours' was the reply. A sudden shower sent us scurrying from garden to bar. I jokingly suggested the barman should phone somebody to tell them to stop it raining. He looked totally panicked and bewildered. 'While we wait for it to stop we'll have a couple of drinks at the bar' I said. But no, there is protocol to follow. We must sit at a table, be given napkins and a bowl of nuts and must select our drinks from a menu.' As I said 'This is one strange hotel.'
Breakfast was very good with an excellent selection of hot and cold foods. The decor is cafeteria, but good cafeteria. We were surprised to find that dinner, fine dining they claimed, was served in the same room. No white tablecloths but some rather fetching candles on each table. If the chef is to honour us with his best we thought we should reciprocate by at least wearing a nice pair of pants and a good shirt. The only other diners were four young fellows right off the practice pitch - grubby t-shirts, worn jeans, dirty trainers and one of them wearing a ball cap. So much for ambiance. But now for the surprise. The rood was absolutely superb. We are food people and can say, without a shadow of doubt, that this was the best meal by far that we had in two weeks in England. Strange place, strange people, strange hotel.

Enjoyed our stay at Stoke Place found a very good deal via Trip Advisor. We arrived early and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Bar area very pleasant and grounds looked lovelly even though we didn't have time to explore them. It did seem strange not having tea and coffee making facilities but this didn't detract from our stay.We had cofee in the bar area which was very pleasant. Reception staff very helpful and arranged a taxi for us to travel to a family party.Breakfast was excellent one of the best we have ever had. The only slight criticism we would have is that the windows in our room were very old sashes and our bathroom was freezing cold because we couldn't close the window. Would return (in warmer weather) and stay for dinner!

My fiancee and i stayed here over easter weekend - just for a one night break. We paid extra for a garden view room which, I have to say was a little dissapointing. There are some with full glass doors and on a summer's day it would be lovely looking on to the walled garden, but our room just had a window and was very small and claustrophobic. We asked to move into the main house and were given a standard room which was tastefully decorated and pleasant enough.

But the rooms arent why you visit here.. the food was absolutely outstanding. And if you get a deal with D, B&B good value. It is very experimental and just amazing. Breakfast was great too.

When we checked out, I did ask if the room we had was cheaper than the one we had booked (which it was ) and was told no. It was only £10 difference but for the principle I did say I didnt think that was very good not to offer the refund. Reception staff let the place downa bit.

Overall - I wouldnt expect too much of the rooms but the food and service in the bar are both absolutely brilliant and worth a visit
