“Very Nice Stay- would stay again!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2014

My Fiance and I stayed for one night for a wedding (not at the hotel but in the area) and we had a Garden room, very nicely decorated and the bed and bedding were very comfortable, and the underfloor heating in our wetroom was amazing!

The food and staff were very pleasent too! Would definately recommend and would stay again!

Like all AA Rosette Restaurants this one serves very minute portions of decorative food!
Lots of smears, dots, small squares, foam and strange combinations - not much actual food.

Thus only eat here if you are happy to pay £35 for 2 courses and £45 for 3 courses plus service, for this type of food.
Restaurants like this must love the Diners who rave about this food !

The Garden Room Restaurant for a fine dining Dinner does not fit in with their decor.
The walls are decorated with green wallpaper reminiscent of the 60's.
The two of us were seated at a large green glass topped table for 8 !!
say no more!!!!!!!

My husband and I had a lovely, relaxing stay here last week.
We had requested a cottage room after seeing it recommended on tripadvisor but when we were shown to our room, we were a little disappointed to see it was quite dark and next to the main road, so not very peaceful. The carpet was also very stained and when we opened the bathroom window, an old mattress had been dumped outside, so not a great start.
However, as soon as we went back to reception and asked if there were any rooms available in the main house, the lovely lady on reception upgraded us to the Gloucester junior suite which was much more in keeping with the house. She also ran back down to collect our champagne and chocolates!
The house is a little quirky! It's an old fashioned country house from the outside but the inside has many contemporary features, combined with wonky floors and traditional large fireplaces and high ceilings. Very charming.
The Gloucester suite has lovely views across the grounds to the lake and high windows which let in plenty of light. There is a gorgeous roll-top bath in the window as well as a large rain-head shower so we utilised both!
It was nice to see hair conditioner also provided in the bathroom as so many hotels omit to offer this.
The hotels layout is a little odd, with lots of twists and turns but this also adds to the character.
The restaurant has modern decor but not too over the top as to be uncomfortable. The waiting service was spot-on and the food was absolutely delicious!
Each dish was like a little piece of art. The only downside to this was that the portions sizes were tiny and my husband left still feeling hungry so had to order room service afterwards!
They also have an extensive wine list with many wines at very reasonable prices for a hotel.
The bedroom had memory foam pillows and mattress which I personally can't get comfortable on but that is personal choice.
We had room service breakfast which was plentiful, warm and tasty.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and the restaurant.
The only thing that lets it down at all is the lack of care to the upkeep of the decor but if you can ignore this you will have a very relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

This was our second visit here. On the first visit we has a tasting menu and overnight stay (July 2013), this time the dinner as a tasting menu with wine flight.

We loved the food here. Absolutely deserves a Michelin star compared to others with one we have visited.

Tonight's menu was fantastic and service was very good.

Highly recommend.

We stayed in mid-march during the week as part of a living social package (excellent value at under £170 for a night's stay, box of handmade chocolates, bottle of champagne, 3 course dinner and full English breakfast). The house is lovely upon arrival, and a relatively short taxi ride from the train station (itself a 15 /20 min journey from west London!). We saw a pond and nicely tended grounds although our time outside was limited.

Upon check in, we were upgraded to the Gloucester Suite, a high ceilinged room with tub, shower etc. the handmade chocolates were delicious, as was the bottle of French champagne which was quickly brought to us on ice. A lovely chandelier hung over the bed.

The only drawbacks I would attribute to Stoke Place had to do with the room- the shower did not drain properly, leaving the shower room completely wet. The desk attendant had to knock on our door the next morning for the wake up call as the phone was not working. I later could not locate the hairdryer and realized with no connected phone (odd for any hotel), I had to go to reception in pajamas. Not ideal for a fine country house stay.

However, the house itself was gorgeous inside, if a bit empty (it was mid week). The bar is charming and the Garden Room served up absolutely superb food! I would definitely make a trip back to Stoke just for the dinner experience. The breakfast selection the next morning with fresh pastries, fruit and eggs to order was more than satisfying.

In all, without the mishaps around the room conditions, I would have given this a higher rating (and I would definitely give 5 stars for food). It's a lovely place to stop and stay, but my recommendation is to stop and just eat.

My wife got me a stay at Stoke Place from Travel Zoo for my birthday. The package included a three course meal, a glass of champagne each, overnight stay and full English breakfast along with a box of chocolates in the room on arrival.

As I type this it is Mothering Sunday. The "box of chocolates" seems appropriate as a place to start. Imagine the small boxes which bridal favours come in. Now fill one with two chocolates. Put two such boxes on the table and that is your box of chocolates apparently worth £15. Now imagine giving your mum that for Mothering Sunday. Would you have just given her a box of chocolates? Or an excuse for a clip around the ear?

The room was swealtering until we found the air conditioning so the chocolates were somewhat warm and soft.

Fast forward to the "three course meal" and it turned out to be absolutely superb. We were given an amuse bouche to start, then a small starter before our chosen meals. There was a palette cleanser before pudding too. So the "three courses" ended up as six. We chose a not unreasonably priced wine and very enjoyable it was too.

The "garden room" felt a little odd as a restaurant. Its style felt to me a little incongruent with the building itself but style is a personal thing. I realised why at breakfast: it feels well designed as a breakfast room. It did however lack atmosphere and was set out in a very regimented way - plus every time a waiter walked past we bounced up and down as the floor boards are somewhat springy.

Service was fair through the meal, though one waitress kept leaning across me and the announcment of the dishes was a bit mumbled. I did feel a bit rushed at the end - we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and said, "no." At that point I still had half a glass of wine and was sitting enjoying it. We were then asked if we could move to the bar so they could get the table turned around for the next guests - would they have said the same if we had wanted tea/coffee?

We were not offered the champagne at all and I had to ask for it once we got to the bar.

Breakfast was clearly not cooked by a chef of the same calibre. Yes it was a full English but it was pretty average.

Ultimately the "box of chocolates" was a good metaphor for the visit - some chocolates are great, some are not. This stay was fabulous in parts - the room was good, comfy bed, polite staff, good wine, superb evening meal (really first rate). In other parts it was not good - the rushed finish to our meal, having to ask for the champagne, the ambiance of the restaurant, the average breakfast. Not forgetting that box of chocolates...

Overall it was a good stay and an enjoyable one but for just a few tweaks it could have been an excellent one.

We stayed for my husband's birthday - on a celebration package that included dinner / champagne and then room. Reception was a little understaffed on arrival but extra staff did arrive fairly swiftly to check us in.

The room (Executive) was a decent size with a very nice refurbished bathroom. Complimentary water and generous sized toiletries. Mind the door though - both of us got stuck in the bathroom due to the funny door handles which slide through your hand and are difficult to grip... we chuckled, but would have been a bit concerning if you were in there alone as there is no way to call reception!!

We ate in the Garden Room - interesting/ fun decor, nice ambience. The food is "posh" and not totally my cup of tea, however my husband ate everything put in front of him and I could appreciate the quality of what we had... (I'm just not a fan of eating foam... :)). I did however love the Guiness bread which was sensational. The staff were attentive and talked us through the menu knowledgeably.

We will definitely go back, it's a nice local bolt hole for us. Next time we might eat at the local pub (Red Lion is 3 mins away) but that's not to discredit the lovely Garden Room - more of reflection of my love of a burger and chips!! We'd also check out the spa as it looked good.
