“Seen Better Days”
Reviewed 18 October 2009

The last days of our pleasant autumn before next weeks wind and rain.Drive down to Cookham, visit the Stanley Spencer art gallery, stroll by the Thames and then off to Taplow House for afternoon tea.I had rejected Cliveden because it seemed to a be a bit OTT.Wished I hadn't.
Like other reviwers I had forebodings on entering. It had that stale English lunch smell that I hadn't encountered for many years.I had booked tea but was the only one.
Tea could be taken ''in the bar'' or ''dining room'' .The bar looked so dark and miserable we opted for the dining room overlooking the gardens where we sat in splendid isolation, while the staff passed back and forth clearing up from a couple of family lunches. If this place has had a makeover recently as reported then it's badly in need of another.A good Hoovering in the corners wouldn't go amiss.
Service was gushingly amateur.Opted for the Champagne Tea at £20.+service at 12.5% put on the bill.
All I can say is OK'ish -a few finger sandwiches of cucumber ,smoked salmon, ham and mustard. The scones were fine with clotted cream and plum jam.Pattisserie passable.
The big pot of tea was at least leaf and refreshing.
Dissapointing. If this is the average standard of the great traditional British tea then I won't bother.
I've had much better outside the UK, in Paris , Lisbon and Berlin where the quality of pattisserie and cakes and service is miles better, and you can get real tea as well.
Foodie Britain-not here in Taplow.Bit of a time warp actually.

When we arrived the booking in service was poor as there was only 1 person on reception, eventually we were given our room key and taken up 4 flights of stairs, on each level the decor deterioreted through dark and tatty corridors, rooms were still being cleaned at 3 in the afternoon. I was beginning to have a very unpleasant feeling about the whole weekend and this was not a very comforting start.

The suite we had booked into were 2 seperate rooms with a door on the corridor leading to them, they were dirty and dusty and the decor was dark and uninviting, the bathroom sink had a crack in it !. The carpets had stains on them and the rooms smelt musty.

When we went down to the bar / restaurant you had to hunt around for staff as there did not seem to be anybody assigned to a particular job, therfore everytime you needed anything you had to go and find the staff.

Overall, very disappointed. The place feels very run down and old fashioned (and not in a good way) and looks like it may only be suitable for the older generation - having said that there is no lift !! so beware.

The reception area was empty when we walked in - no staff, so we had some time to absorb the dreary and rather down at heel surroundings!! I finally found a receptionist who was dealing with an irate guest who still had their breakfast tray in their room at 4pm! Found it hard to understand a word the receptionist said and was even less impressed to have been given the wrong room key which we had to go back and change. The walk to the room was very depressing - dark and tatty corridors and I was beginning to have a very unpleasant feeling about the whole weekend stay. The room initally proved to be a nice surprise - bed looked lovely and inviting and a decent size - but the thick dust on the kettle and the tea caddy did little to help and neither did the sole packet of crushed biscuits. The carpet was covered in unpleasant stains and the shower screen had some very nasy dirty clumps around it. Housekeeping stuff was left lying around in corridors - so overall the housekeeping needs to be hugely improved.

Ate in the restaurant as we were part of a package and the food and service was faultless, but the atmosphere very austere and uncomfortable.

It appeared that the hotel was almost completely empty judging by the lack of cars and diners, so I would have to question why, when we asked for a very quiet room, we were put on a floor below possibly the only other residents that night and the stomping about overhead woke us up both at night and in the morning.

Overall, very disappointed. The place feels very run down and old fashioned (and not in a good way) and looks like it may only be suitable for the over 80's. The Bar area was the most depressing place we have seen, so we opted to have pre dinner drinks in nearby Bray rather than sit in the bar area.

I just wanted to say that our stay at Taplow house for a friends wedding in July 2009 was really good. The staff made the stay really comfortable and enjoyable. The name of the person on reception was Ana, she was especially kind, fun and accommodating. The wedding reception went so smoothly, the staff really knew what they were doing. It was very impressive!

The staff keep their upper lips tense in the British way and really do try their best, but are fighting a losing battle. Several people stood out, including Kimberly and Ewa, although none of the staff was even average or below. The facility, though, has seen better days pass into history. Many of the rooms are tiny and make it difficult to even move around. There are little gnats or something that find their way into the rooms in the evening, even with the window closed. Some members of our party had to change rooms for various malfunctions and problems. The hotel is big on weddings, and there were several during my stay there. I'm sure the staff creates a memorable event, and in the excitement of the moment you can probably overlook quite a bit.

My son and daughter in law were married on 29th May 2009 and the reception was booked at the Taplow House Hotel. It was a fabulous reception..the hotel setting and grounds are beautiful and look really good in the wedding pictures. The meal was first class as was the service from ALL the waiting staff, who were friendly and very attentive.
The meal was held in spendid surroundings. The evening 'do' was in a cellar underneath the hotel reminiscent of the Beatles Cavern club, and there is a comfortable area set aside for oldies so they don't get their eardrums damaged.
We did find the drinks expensive so be ready for this and the hotel rooms were out of our budget but for those people who are better off than us I'm sure they would have a very pleasant stay here. All in all, I can't fault this hotel for the great efforts they made in ensuring that the wedding was one to remember!! Thank you Talow House Hotel!!
