A really good local museum Wisbech & Fenland Museum is one of the oldest museums in the United Kingdom.

The collections were initiated by the town's Literary and Museum Societies which were formed in 1781 and 1835 respectively. The Museum opened in 1847, the collections have continued to grow, but the essence of the Museum remains virtually unchanged. Some displays were updated a few years ago whilst others are in the original display cabinets. There is a large exhibition hall to the rear of the building.

Their current exhibition is 'A Stitch in Time'

and runs from Sat 15 Feb - Sat 26 Apr 2014

10am - 4pm Tues - Sat

It displays a collection of samplers, tapestries and other needlework from the 17th century onwards.

Local history from prehistoric through Roman to modern. Included an excellent cabinet about Thomas Clarkson, an anti-slave trade campaigner. Also a collection of coins that at first sight looked like nothing much, but had labels and notes that traced through almost every monarch in two millennia of British history.

I really enjoyed my visit. It contains so much information about the area. The display cabinets are those lovely wooden Victorian ones. There is a small art gallery as well. It's an informative way to spend a morning and has some interesting artefacts and displays.

It was a lot bigger than expected, lots of unexpected items. There is even an area for art display. Displays from local treasures and from across the world. Definitely worth a visit!

Wisbech and Fenland Museum in the heart of Georgian Wisbech is a real gem, an original Victorian Museum with a huge range of fascinating artefacts including the original manuscript of Dickens' Great Expectations. The Hudson Room stages a wide range of exhibitions throughout the year.
