We have visited the White Lion Inn on many occasions having found it searching on the internet - when ever we are travelling north for our away matches with Crawley Town, this is our first port of call if we are going to the teams in or around Manchester or the North East - the staff always make us welcome, and provide us with an excellent buffet lunch for the travellers on the coach. There is also a large selection of Real Ales to choose from. Although it has changed hands recently there has been no difference in the way were are treated - brilliant place to take a break on a long journey - less than 5 minutes from Junction 16 on the M6 motorway. Our coach driver Kevin loves the drive in to Barthomley as it tests his driving skills getting the coach down the country lane to the Inn and then parking.

This gorgeous little pub is the real deal. An authentic 17th century village pub with cosy open fires and loads of original features to admire. It's often hard to get a seat here as the place is always buzzing with a steady stream of ramblers, local villagers and their dogs.

The food menu is very simple pub fare and I had the steak and ale pie followed by the bread and butter pudding. The generous portion of pie came with veg and chunky hand cut chips and was delicious. The pudding was not the best I've had this week (it seems to be bread and butter pudding season at the moment) but it was still very good in its own right.

Unfortunately they have to lose a point for a pretty fundamental service error. I was served my main and after salting the chips and eating a couple, the waiter came back and said she'd given me someone else's by mistake. Same meal, but for the adjacent table. I told her I'd started on it but she ignored that, took it off the table and tried giving it to the other customer. It required the combined protests of us both before she returned the meal to me. Bad food hygiene practice and very poor customer service. The sort of thing that makes you wonder what they might be doing where no one is looking.

Met up with a friend as it was roughly half way between us. Lovely olde-world pub with real fires, beams & friendly locals. There were also lots of well-behaved dogs which was lovely!
Food was lovely, shame we didn't have room for a pudding as they looked & sounded great !
Lucky to get a seat as it was busy & it isn't a big place & parking places were limited but overall worth the trip & we'd definitely return !

Called in to this magnificent unspoiled pub and had ordered what we thought would be a toasted sandwich each. One was with chips, the other with salad. When they came my wife and I felt that what we got constituted a full and enjoyable meal- with friendly service and great beer we couldn't have asked for more.

Really enjoyed the meal. Food was excellent and the service good. A reasonable selection of beers (if not spectacular). Only slight gripe was a mix up on the timings of the meal itself, but this was soon rectified.. Overall would recommend and the Steak and Guinness pie is fantastic especially with extra gravy!
