I'm not sure what all the fuss is about upon reading previous bad reviews.
The hotel is set on beautiful land. We were treated with a friendly welcome, the room was a descent size - nothing overly special but we just wanted a comfortable bed for the night. We were upgraded to a full English breakfast in the morning which was lovely - continental was kept topped up and was fresh.
Overall I seem to get the impression that if your nice to the staff, they'll be nice back.
We had no problems throughout our stay and at the end of the day, all we wanted was a warm, comfortable bed and pleasent experience which is what we got.

Quick tip - definitely pay a visit to the Sneyds Arms down the road. They serve the best pub food and are welcoming!

Stayed here for three nights to visit Alton Towers. Saved £288 on what staying at the resort hotel would have cost us. Only 15 minute drive from the park.

Lovely welcome from nice people. Clean and comfortable rooms. Hotel is part of a golf club and is very quiet so forget nightclubs and disco atmosphere.

Menu is small but the food was nice. I personally recommend the lamb shank.

Continental breakfast is included in the price but is basic as you would expect. if you are doing Alton Towers then pay for the English breakfast (only £7 extra).

Myself and three mates went for a golfing weekend and upon arrival thought what a great place and the golf course looked wonderful. Then reality hit home ! The staff were rude and did not seem to know what they were doing and when we got to our rooms they were very dated and gruby but we tried to enjoy ourselves and went to the so called club house. No one in this place knows the first thing about golf or how to run a golf club, we wanted some balls and tees and a spare glove but non of these were available. Warning, do not complain or you will be told if you dont like it you can leave. In the evening we went to a local pub called The Sneyd Arms because there was no one to look after us at hotel, the locals were very friendly and told us of some horror stories about Whiston Hall. All of us agreed that this could be a fantastic place but until someone who cares takes it on it will be as it is a disaster.

We stayed for a couples weekend, reception is FROSTY to say the least unless you pay up front, my advice is to check the room before you pay. Our room had a leaking shower, a musky smell and bedding which we were unsure of. Breakfast is very continental if you consider 1 croissant and a cup of tea continental, poor selection OR pay more for a full breakfast, another excuse to hike up the price on what I would consider to be an overpriced stay.
The facade of the hotel is tremendous, the exterior looks like it promises a luxurious and restful weekend, its a shame the interior did not live up the the expectations. Very poor

Room Tip: Check the quality of the room before you pay.

Where do I start, poor room standards, very poor toilet cleanliness, musky smell in the room. Overpriced for the standard of the room. Could be a great hotel but very sadly lacking on all fronts of cleanliness, service and value for money.

We are quite fussy about where we stay, so was a bit apprehensive after reading some reviews. Should not have worried though! Staff very happy and friendly, could not do enough for us (2 adults, 2 Children). We stayed in family room 9, a little small but very clean and tidy, bathroom a nice size. The meals in the restaurant were very good, soup, barbeque chicken, chips, spinach & feta cheese tart, salad. The continental breakfast was plentiful, croissants were fresh & tasty, toast, cereals, juice, tea & coffee. Overall a great stay and only 10-15 minutes scenic drive to Alton Towers. Would stay again.

Avoid this hotel at all costs. Massively over-charged for what is a very basic and grubby hotel. Before arrival my wife was charged £50 on her card, that bit was okay, but we were over-charged £50 upon arriving. We were also over-charged for a meal we had - so check every bill carefully. The rooms were basic, didnt appear very clean, mugs were dirty that were provided for coffee. We found someone elses clothes in the wardrobe, that had then been removed the following day but room not cleaned. Bit unnerving to think someone had been in our room with all our stuff! Rooms are charged at £85 approx and yet breakfast is an insult. Stale croissants, corn flakes and weetabix left out in an open dish, one jug of milk for cereal/ tea/ coffee available, and a supermarkets 'basic' yogurts! worst hotel breakfast we have ever had and a real kick in the teeth after paying that much for room! we were looking forward to nice weekend away, soggy corn flakes in not my idea of a nice breakfast! im sorry but if you're happy to charge that much for a room - FEED YOUR GUESTS A HALF DECENT BREAKFAST!! this hotel is out to make money out of people, didnt seem interested in offering any basic quality of hotel service! AVOID
