I know a bit about canals, Narrowboats and boat hire, as I run a narrowboat hire company in Sheffield, but this review is as a customer, currently sitting on one of their clean, nicely fitted out and we'll maintained boats.

The company is ideally situated to access what are, in my opinion, some of the most delightful of the UK's waterways. A friendly, family run and knowledgeable bunch, with 16 boats to suit all needs, I can't find anything to quibble about.

If you want to escape the tedious immediacy of high speed modern day life and bob along the canals at walking speed, you'll do well to hire from Andersen.

Cant find an entry under accommodation, so writing here, as this company is well worth using.
We regularly hire canal boats with friends, and this has to be one of the best run boatyards in the business.
This time we hired two large boats - both were in very good condition and well maintained, even though it was end of season. Layout is practical and comfortable, with plenty of room for sitting and relaxing inside if you don't want to be out in the weather. Good quality cookware meant it was easy to cook for a big group when we didn't feel like eating out.
The base at Middlewich is a good starting point - with lots of choice of routes. This time we went along the Caldon canal to Leek - really pretty countryside with a nice market town at the end.
The family run boatyard is really helpful - a nice friendly handover, making sure we knew how everything worked before we set off, a minor engine problem mid week was fixed within the hour, and they even gave us tips on avoiding the worst of the M6 traffic on the drive home!

We hired the biggest boat Andersen (8-10 berth and 78ft!) had as part of a last minute deal. We thought that bigger meant better... which wasn't exactly the case with only 2 of us on the boat! We had some tricky moments wrestling the boat in the wind and the rain!

Andersen kindly helped us through 3 locks which was a relief to get through a bit of nervousness!

The 3 days on the boat went swimmingly except on the last night when we ran out of gas and could neither cook nor keep warm... we were only told about a spare canister when we got back to Andersen! We would advise improved written instructions to avoid this in future as the instructions were quite difficult to take in at the beginning.

But the boat was well equipped and cared for.

It was the first time we had hired a canal boat and what luxury........ such a surprise........ so warm and comfortable and kitted out to a high standard ...... home from home. The company which is a family business spent a great effort giving us an excellent start to our holiday, we couldn't get over the time and trouble spent with us to ensure we were well equipped with new skills for our first adventure on the open canal!! Even though we hired a boat locally as soon as you stepped on board the other boaters and people you met on the tow path were so friendly - it was a world away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. We are looking forward to booking our next trip with Anderson Boats. Thank you

We decided at the last minute to book a 10 day trip so we had time to get to Llangollen. We love this canal in the Autumn.

The welcome at the boatyard was excellent as usual. We have hired Andersen boats lots of times so it was nice to see Jenny and Pauline and the rest of the crew.

Although it was the end of the season the boat was spotless and very smart. Several people asked us for more information about the Andersen Boats as they were very impressed with them.

The galley on our boat (Fijord Empress) is spacious and well equipped. I have cooked a full scale Sunday dinner in the past. On this trip I did not do much cooking as there are so many good pubs and restaurants on the route. We like the Black Lion at Ellesmere.

We had some rain but also lots of brilliant Autumn sunshine.

We hope to book a holiday in the Spring. Probably for a fortnight so we have time to get to Whalley Bridge.

We recently had a holiday in an apartment in Dorset for a change but we much prefer the canals as there is so much to do and see all the time, and you can leave the car behind.

We look forward to seeing you again next year

Cath and Mick
