“GREAT THINGS TO COME at Warners Alavaston Hall Hotel!”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

Five of us booked a break from 27th to 30th September in order to enjoy Alvaston Hall and the Eagles tribute group ‘Talon’
We were aware through reading Trip Avisor reviews of the building work taking place and that the alternative arrangement for dining and entertainment was to be in a marquee, so we had some reservations when we set out.
Between us we occupied three standard rooms in the main house; the rooms provided everything anyone would need to be comfortable and as usual spotlessly clean.

We have stayed several times at Alvaston Hall and found the same level of standards and care that we have enjoyed previously, yes, the grounds were part building site but the work taking place was unobtrusive with a minimum of noise.

The marquee is quite large, light and airy, was well heated providing reasonable conditions all considered, although the food and service was good it would not be fair to compare it to a formal kitchen/restaurant situation.
As the stage and dance floor were a temporary arrangement again it would not be fair to compare it with a formal setting, the seating in the marquee is on level ground so at the rear you are at a disadvantage when entertainment is taking place, ‘Talon’, although very good were at a disadvantage to present their best.

All members of staff were as usual welcoming, caring and nothing was too much to ask of them, the renovation is costing we understand £13 million which should provide for a great destination.
Warners need to ensure the excellent standard that staff and the great entertainment team provides at present is maintained when the site is completed.

All in all we had a lovely weekend and have a Twixmas break booked between Christmas and New Year so we are looking forward to enjoying the new restaurant/entertainment building and meeting the wonderful staff again.

We have just returned from a 2 day midweek break at Alvaston Hall. This was a last minute booking and as regulars we wanted to experience how things were during their spell in the marquee. First of all may I say we went with full knowledge of the building improvements, but if, however, you are not aware of the extent of the work then don't panic. Upon arrival, if you are not happy, you are offered alternative accommodation or a full refund. So for anyone who is unsure about going, try it, you've got nothing to lose. As this was a flying visit we came to chill out and relax but if you intend to make use of the facilities there is loads of stuff to do. Archery, rifle shooting, croquet and putting if you fancy something outdoors or yoga, reiki, pilates and table tennis if you don't want to venture out. This is just a small selection of the activities on offer. We chose just to sit back and have a couple of drinks (with no kids running round) just heaven. There was also lots of different dance classes on offer such as cha cha, rumba and line dancing. It's all included in the price of your break. Basically you can do as much or as little as you like. We had a signature room in The Limes. It was immaculately clean and very comfortable. The bed was so large, I slept really well.

Now to the main reason for our visit: to sample "life in the tent". The temporary marquee is very large, albeit long and narrow, but very nice indeed. I think they got the temperature right too, it was neither too hot nor cold. It is still set up with the same principle of the cabaret/diner so your table is yours for the duration of your stay. We were served by the very attentative Jamie, who remembered our names and for whom, nothing was too much trouble. The temporary salad bar and carvery were just fine. Our food was hot and the meals that were served direct to the table were delicious. How the chefs and the team are managing in the circumstances is commendable. On the entertainment side again the team are coping remarkably well. As the marquee is so long it must be really difficult to project to the back of the room and get feedback in return. As we were sat near the front we had a great view so it wasn't a problem for us but I think it would not have been as visible from the back. They worked tirelessly all day, their talent and enthusiasm is amazing.

From a personal point of view it was good to see things from both sides i.e. talking to staff and the other guests about all the developments. The new dining area is opening in December and looks fantastic but for the time being the atmosphere is one of everyone pulling together in that great British spirit. The thing that makes Alvaston so very special is the people. Our visits are always memorable. I'm so glad we had our Glamping (Glamorous Camping) experience and can't wait to see the new stuff but for now it remains business as usual.

My advice to anyone concerned about the building work is that if you go with a negative attitude you are on the wrong foot straight away. If you go however with a positive outlook you really can have great fun. Many thanks to Sharon and all the team and we look forward to seeing you at Twixmas.

My wife and I did a weekend break at Warners on 2nd to 6th Sept at Alvaston Hall which was thoroughly enjoyable. All the staff, (reception, entertainment and restaurant) were very good and very friendly. Renovations are in progress with a lot of the building works to the dining and show area,
The restaurant, cabaret stage and dance floor are all based in a temporary marquis which is located onto the front of the hotel. It is a pretty good compromise and well put together but as you have allocated seats for meals and entertainment and we were placed at the far end of the marquis, we didn’t get a very good view on the good all that was going on also it alternated between chilly and very warm because of the temporary hot air blowers. The food sometimes was overcooked or a bit dry . The kitchen is a bit of a distance from the marquis and the food having be transferred to the temporary serving areas was not as great as usual.
The entertainment was very good every night especially the Elvis cover
We had a standard plus room in the old house which better than I expected it to be. It was nicely decorated, very clean, a large bed with a good shower/bath and toilet facilities. Once the renovations are finished it should be very nice!
It was a very good break, not quite as good as I expected but put this down to the update of the hotel.
My big disappointment was that they didn’t have a decent real ale on, only Tetley’s which is a poor quality one. This is one thing I have found on a few Warners trips. They often do have a good real ale bur then it quite often runs out for some strange reason. Very bad bar management
Warners are always very good. Clean No kids. Good food and entertainment.
We always go on a cheapy deal as they would be very expensive on the book price

Room Tip: 26 at the front of main house

This was our first visit to a Warners hotel break and I must say we thoroughly enjoyed it. From start to finish all the staff, (reception, restaurant and the entertainments) were all fantastic and all very friendly. Although renovations were taking place and most of the grounds were taken up with building works, this did not spoil our break one bit. We took part in most of the activities which went on during the daytime and as the weather was not too good anyway, we were quite happy with what we did, and the staff made you feel as if you were part of a family.

As for the accommodation itself, it was brilliant, much better than I expected it to be. We had a signature room on the ground floor which had patio doors, and although at the back of the hotel this did not deter us. The rooms were beautifully decorated and very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Everywhere was very well kept and once the renovations are finished it should be quite chic! I would say, however, that the age group was fairly oldish, didn't see many 20 or 30 somethings there but then this could be because of the renovations. It was an adult only break. There was a shop there but not much to attract you to buy anything. Missed opportunity there! Still you can buy a paper there.

The restaurant was fairly good, although because they have renovations going on the restaurant was all based in a temporary marquis, which was well put together and incorporated the cabaret stage and dancefloor. Having said that, I feel that this may have been why sometimes the food seemed either a bit dry or overcooked. Obviously the kitchens must have been some way from the marquis and food would have had to have been transferred to the temporary serving areas in the marquis. For this reason I feel that the food was not as enjoyable as it could have been. The one thing that I thought was really good was that you are allocated your restaurant table on arrival and you keep that table for the whole of your stay.

The entertainment was absolutely great, every night we had entertainment which we watched from our dining table. It was every bit as good as cruise ship entertainment. The ents team worked very very hard, dancing and singing in the evening and then working at the activities during the daytime and were all lovely people.

All in all this break was better than I expected it to be and I will be rebooking soon.

We returned yesterday, after a 3 night weekend here with our friends. The 4 of us had booked Royale rooms several weeks ago to celebrate a special birthday and at the time we were not made aware of the extensive building work being undertaken.
I wrote to Alvaston Hall during August, asking for more information and pictures of the "temporary venue" which was to house the restaurant and entertainment - but no images were available and no further information was given. You can probably imagine, that we were getting rather anxious at this point as we thought that both food and entertainment may be compromised.
Well - it is a marquee and it has been beautifully done. The food was excellent and hot and the shows were varied and very enjoyable. Saturday night with "Elvis" was particularly good, as was the show put on by the entertainment team on the Sunday.
Over the weekend, we had lovely, sunny weather and my only concerns about this venue would be that when it rains, it would be quite noisy as it hits the roof. I would also recommend that ladies take something for over their shoulders. The Marquee becomes very warm at times from the hot air being blown into it - and when that stops, the temperature drops rapidly. It can then become chilly, before the hot air sets off again.
Our bedrooms were in The Limes and we were not affected by the building work - plus, the work stopped on Sat/Sun.
Altogether, we had a great time and our concerns were unwarranted. I just wish that Warners had communicated more extensively from the outset which would have alleviated our anxieties.

I really appreciate your feedback.

I can assure you that we have planned thoroughly for the Temporary Venue. We have made sure guests will be warm and comfortable so that they can simply enjoy their delicious food and dazzling live entertainment. The dancefloor, Buffey Carvery and stage are excellent quality and I can assure guests they will have a fantastic time.

Thank you for highlighting the quality of the Temporary Venue and I am pleased you enjoyed yourself. I do hope you spoke to a Manager if you were feeling a chill in the Venue as this certainly should not be the case. I will investigate this further. We specifically made sure that Guests would not need to go outside at all to enter the venue as it is all connected.

I am delighted to hear the Building Works did not interrupt your visit with us in any way and hope that the fact we try to inform all our guests before arrival made you feel confident with your break before you arrived. I am sorry you did not receive a letter or a phone call before your break.

Hoping to see you again soon,

Terry Sterling, General Manager

We returned yesterday from a 4 day stay. We were told in advance of building work but decided to ignore the negative reviews and judge for ourselves. I must say we were pleasantly surprised. we stayed in the Minshull suite and our daughter and son-in-law were in Bridgemere suite. both were superb. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We thought the dining marquee looked beautiful and our compliments must go to the chefs for serving delicious meals while working under very difficult circumstances. Our thanks to everyone at Alveston, including Heather who looked after our room, for a great time. Our daughter and son in law and ourselves have booked to return in September next year and we were able to choose the same rooms again. We would recommend Alveston even with the work going on, try it and judge for yourselves.

Room Tip: Suites are beautiful .
