“Housekeeping let this trip down badly”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2013

Food, friendliness, staff (reception and catering) and gardens superb. Management of wife's Coeliac dietary requirements excellent. However, The housekeeping was very poor.

On arrival we were given a room whose view was completely obliterated by a Marquee. We were moved when we complained. It would have been professional to have been advised of the restricted view. Other issues; towels placed in bath not replaced. Request for a teapot in room needed 3 reminders before it eventually arrived. Teacups not cleaned. Bath Gel not replenished. Shower was luke warm. Complained about this but no action taken. Awoken at 06:45 by maintenance truck cleaning drains which took over 1 hour!

It takes a hotelier with an impressive level of arrogance to hang the portrait of such a divisive figure as Mrs Thatcher on the wall of a hotel in the North of England.
Is the arrogance justified? The building and grounds are lovely. Afternoon tea was fun and dinner was good across all courses. Service was as it should be and not too fussy.
It's a mystery to me why the rest of the world has not adopted our breakfast because, apart from a reduced life expectancy, it is really rather wonderful. This, again, was impressive.
Unfortunately our room was pretty drab and the 'offer' (afternoon tea, dinner, bed & breakfast) is just about good enough to hide its sins.

Room Tip: Don't ask for one that looks out onto a flat roof

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. We used an offer which included dinner, afternoon tea and breakfast.

Positives- The room was very big, nicely furnished.
The staff were really really nice and friendly
It was good value (with our offer probably not at full price)
The grounds and house were nice to look at.

Negatives- There were worn bits like paper peeling in the bathroom
The bed was also worn out
The dinner was not as nice as hoped ie bread was dry, meat was fatty/chewy,
bubbly was acidy
The afternoon tea was a bit disappointing again bread on sandwiches dry- it just
didn't seem very special
The service at dinner wasn't great- drinks menu didn't arrive and so we didn't get
our bottle of wine until half way through the main course

We booked for a day earlier than our family's celebration to get settled in and another wedding was in full party mode. Plenty of parking available. A little disappointed with our allocated room we asked the receptionist, Leah, to try and give us an alternative. With little hassle and always smiling, she manged to juggle rooms around and sorted this out for us even though the hotel was extremely full for the next night. This was typical of the type of service we experienced ,by all the staff and reflects on a well managed enterprise.
The food was excellent even though the restaurant staff were busy with the wedding party.
My only criticism would be the decor and furnishings are tired but rooms are comfortable and well equipped. You have to have a good sense of direction around the hotel especially finding your rooms, up and down little flights of stairs.
The gardens are a delight and expansive , complete with monet style bridge and a clean pond. Lovely terrace and sunken garden. The weather amazingly was fantastic to enable us to enjoy them.
You can have your dogs in you bedroom but if you fancy ask to take the manager's Labradors (Fritz and Angel) for a walk and enjoy the countryside around the hotel! They seem to know their way around!
If you are lucky enough to book your wedding here , you are fortunate indeed. In the 'season" there is a large marquee in the grounds, yet it does not detract from the gardens.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view over the garden. You do NOT want a room over the kitchen

Stayed for 1 night for a wedding which was amazing but the hotel looks as if nothing has been spent on it for a long time e.g. the wallpaper was peeling off the wall in a toilet cubicle. Our room was in the tower and as you stepped into the room you went down about 6 steps to a small bedroom with a bed that has got to be the smallest bed I have ever slept in. Breakfast was good and the staff very helpful to requests.

Stayed there for a Wedding. The staff were miserable, food was basic and just about Ok. Overpriced for the room we had. If you want to have some lovely photos then the grounds are lovely - and if you can afford it have a marquee - the hotel isn't that great

We stayed for one night over the weekend and to sample the dinner menu. the location is beautiful and the building looks stunning when you see it at the end of the drive. lots of parking right in front of the hotel. we paid £115 on a discount deal which was good value but I would not be happy paying the full price of £205 as some aspects of the suite we had were a little tired but overall the room was fine with some lovely furniture and the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom large and warm.
the service throughout was exemplary with staff always on hand to look after you. we did have issues with dinner as the steak was not to a high standard however the manager was extremely courteous and apologetic and reduced the bill accordngly without any qualms. The breakfast was delicious and I highly recommend the smoked salmon with the softest most delicious scrambled egg ever!

Melvyn the meeter/greeter is a treasure and makes you feel so welcome. we took a walk round the grounds and the lake in the morning and played with Fritz and Angel, the hotel black Labradors. A lovely end to a lovely weekend.

we will be back to try the afternoon tea out on the terrace!
