My wife and I recently moved house from Norfolk to Cheshire and decided to spend our 1st night at The Swan. A long and stressful day was not enhanced by a gruelling 6 hour car journey in pouring rain! We arrived at The Swan very tired and rather dishevelled. However from the minute we arrived we were welcomed and made to feel "at home".The coutyard room we had booked was excellent and after a welcome shower, the meal we enjoyed in the bar was absolutely superb.A wonderful full English breakfast followed a comfortable night's sleep and rounded off a perfect welcome back to Cheshire. The staff at this hotel certainly go out of their way to ensure their guests' stay is an enjoyable one.

Whilst working in the area, we fell upon this first class hotel in thoroughly civilised and characterful surroundings, offering us a continuously high standard of service with staff who always had the time to advise and listen and who were extremely polite at all times. Excellent food on a varied menu and extremely well-kept fine ales. Looking forward to coming back! Mark ('Flat cap') and Trevor

My daughter and I were on a pampering weekend and ate in a local hotel the previous night and food was so "good" we opted not to eat there again. Hotel staff recommended the Swan and we were not disappointed. Although it is a restricted menu on a Sunday, there was still a good selection. Didn't need pudding but my daughter couldn't resist sticky toffee pudding and the bread and butter pudding was yummy. The Staff were attentive without being pushy; friendly and had a good banter with both my daughter and me. Reasonable prices and good hot food, what more could anyone ask?

Definitely worth a visit.

Room Tip: Did not stay overnight but wish we had.

Dinner for two, on a busy Friday evening. The staff were attentive and helpful, the food just perfect. A little hint - be sure to be really hungry if you order the larger portions. We had the smaller option and the portions were generous. I had chicken and leek pie - perfect, my partner had fish and chips (okay not rocket science) but the meals was delightful.
Highly recommend dining here

Staying overnight at a British pub is something of a lottery, but the positive reviews of the Swan outweighed the negative, so I gave it a try. I was not disappointed - the Swan was originally a coaching inn and is rightly proud of its history and heritage: it oozes atmosphere. My (single) room was on the first floor (second for our American friends) and overlooked the main street. The street noise warned about by some reviewers did not materialize and I had a good night's sleep (this may be different at weekends, though). The cooked breakfast was excellent, but if you wanted to go continental the choice was very limited (no cold meats or cheese, for example). I also had dinner there, which was very good (see separate review). If ever I need to stay in this area again, I would certainly return to the Swan.

Had a fabulous night at The Swan last night.
Very oldy worldly 250 year old inn, beautiful setting middle of the high street in Tarporley. Fabulous old pub with quirky little snugs serving the most fantastic fresh local food. The evening meal was first class. As was the service.
We booked a suite, room 5 at front of the hotel over looking the high street, despite that the noise was low.
Great room with a fabulous bed, and some reviews say the place is dated but it's in line with the age of the place, modern would ruin it!
Breakfast was equally beautiful and fresh....fully enjoyed our stay.

Stayed for New Year's Eve. Our room was at the back of the hotel in a small very traditional (very thick walls, original beautiful windows) outbuilding. Decor was of a very high standard and the room had everything required. Breakfast was exceptionally good and cooked fresh to order. An amazing stay for only £80 for two including breakfast. The pub / hotel itself is top quality traditional style. Would definitely stay again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The 16th century Swan has been welcoming guests through its doors for over 400 years, and was once a convenient resting place for those travelling the 200 miles from London to Chester. Today, our comfortable rooms and welcoming bar and dining areas mean that The Swan continues to be a haven for visitors from far and wide. A regular winner of the Best Kept Village award, Tarporley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then, Tarporley was home to just eight households, but today is one of the largest villages in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, with antique, curio, craft and fashion shops lining its streets. Some of The Swan’s most historic features are located in its Hunt Room, home to the Tarporley Hunt Club. Founded in 1762, it is the oldest in England. The club historically met twice annually at The Swan, with each meeting lasting seven days and the hunting taking place largely within the nearby Delamere Forest. In the founding set of rules, members were required to drink “three collar bumpers” after both dinner and supper, and, in the event of marriage, to present each club member with a pair of buckskin breeches. The Tarporley Hunt Club still meet once a year today, a quarter of a millennium after Obidiah Lane went hare coarsing with his chums and decided, after much merriment at the Swan, this should happen every year; “We shall meet for the purposes of general conviviality” he declared! ... more   less
