This is the first time we'd stayed at a MacDonald hotel and I'm already looking for other hotels in the chain. It's refreshing to find such excellent customer service and such excellent quality in a chain hotel. From the minute we checked in every member of staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and unusually weren't Eastern European. The rooms here are large, beautifully furnished and equipped and spotlessly clean. Our dinner in the restaurant was a shock - it was excellent - of gourmet standard - certainly not the usual bland hotel restaurant type of food. Breakast the next morning was delicious too - loads of choice at the buffet and individually cooked full English breakfasts to follow using quality ingredients.
As to the golf - there are two courses. We played the Premiership on day one which we found to be very good although sadly the greens had been hollow cored which was a disappointment but it was that time of the year and greens do need to be treated.
Day two we played the Championship course. This looks really dreary from the hotel car park so we were totally surprised when we set off to find ourselves on a stunning parkland course with so many different and extemely interesting holes to enjoy. Two of the par threes are exceptionally good holes - real signature holes. The greens on this course were in excellent condition - i don't expect there are many hotel courses that would have such good greens in late September or to think of it at any time of the year. Hotel course greens are usually well below par but not so here. If you do get a choice try and play the Championship on day two.

If you're looking for a good short golf break then Portal is for you. Incidentally the lovely village of Tarporley is less than a mile away with some great local pubs for pre dinner drinks at good prices.
If you're looking for a hotel to stay at in the Tarporley area then I'd heartily recommend this one. For non golfers the pool, gym and spa really do look fantastic - we didn't have time to try any of these though.
All in all a perfect short break with good friends.

hi wanted a nice late room getaway with my boyfriend, Well I can say it was a lovely hotel and on lovely grounds but the price for breakfast, drinks, snacks were well over priced!! it cost 32 quid for a breckie sausage, bean, quarter mushroom and piece of bacon A BIT OVER PRICED FOR ME and we had to ask three times for coffee!!!! and arrived when we were about to leave, over all tho staff at reception very friendly but staff at breakfast were rude> such a shame really as the hotel as lovely but i feel that for your money you can get a lot better value and the drinks cost a bomb THANKS

I have stayed at this hotel before and was very happy with it which is why I booked again. This time we had a feature room. It was very spacious and had a lovely balcony. I highly recommend booking this room.
Our break included dinner, bed and breakfast with 3 spa treatments. The restaurant was of very high quality. The breakfast was absolutely Gorgeous with a massive choice. Previous reviews on here have stated that service is slow/ rude etc. This is not true. The waiters are very friendly and couldn't do enough, they were very flexible with my friend who is vegetarian. One waiter commented that groups come in and expect to be served a 3 course dinner and drinks at 7pm and they expect to be in Chester in a bar at 8pm. This isn't that type of restaurant, more of an elegant dining experience which should be enjoyed throughout the evening.
We had the spa treatments which were absolutely out of this world and cannot be faulted. I'm a spa lover and this has to be the nicest set up I have ever been to.
The reason I have rated this slightly lower than I wanted is because the hotel has a gym and pool and has members coming in on a daily basis to use the facilities. Nothing wrong with this at all but the members of the leisure club seem to look down their noses at the guests enjoying the spa. With over 100 lockers and 15 people in the pool we found we could not get a locker for our things. It sound like I am nit picking but when you enter the spa area you want to spend the day/ afternoon there and be sure you things are safe with out having to keep traipsing up to the hotel. We were told by a local who was swimming that all the members take the keys and keep their things in them. She told us to complain as it is an ongoing issue but to be honest we too relaxed to do this and felt it was minor.
We later visited the relaxation room which is a beautiful suite with loungers, fresh fruit, water, magazines and mood lighting. There was no room as a hen group were in there with about 5 other people. these people (not the hen do) gave us filthy looks for opening the door and tutted. We then sat in the other lounge and had coffee whilst we waited for the relaxation suite. We wanted some water so the therapist told us to get some from the relaxation suite, we were tutted at again and given filthy looks by the small group of women, which made the girls from the hen do laugh and sympathise with us. These women spent all afternoon in here and turns out they were local members. We stayed on the Sunday night so used the facilities on Monday. We found the reception the same in the pool on this morning whilst we waited for a class to finish.
I love this hotel but this time I felt that the members/locals/golf widows thought they were far superior than the guests and treated us so. The staff did not do anything wrong and the service was fabulous but I do feel that the way we were treated by the people above lessened my experience. I also must comment on the price of drinks. Groups and couples will book this hotel based on the fab offers but when you buy a round of drinks at an average price of £5 a drink (that is the lowest price drink, some wine is £9 for a small glass) then it becomes an expensive break.

Booked the hotel via lastminute.com with the aim of having a relaxing night away together and that we had. Good location, quick and easy checkin and lovely spacious feature room with balcony. Pool area was lovely and quiet, until childrens time started then it got very noisy so we ended up leaving. Resturant was nice. We were originally going to use the 3 courses for £25 however when we worked out what we wanted off the a la carte prices we weren't saving anything, in one case we would of paid more. So one to watch out for.,
Bed was comfortable. All in all a good night away.
Only downside was that there were alot of golfers around who seemed to lack manners, but given previous reviews it wasn't a surprise.

Room Tip: Feature rooms are lovely

One night stay on the golf Sunday driver deal. Two fantastic golf courses with the premier course slightly better of the two. Lovely hotel in nice location, friendly staff and good spa facilities. Only downside was the cost of drinks and snacks and when we ordered a pre game sandwich it took 45 mins to arrive which meant we had to take it on the course with us! Overall though a pleasant but pricey stay.
