“Great Hotel, Golf & Food but terrible bar/restaurant service.”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

I've just come back from a long weekend @ The Macdonald Portal Hotel were i played golf for 3x days. The 2x courses were lovely and in great condition except the greens, in the whole weekend we never got to see any green staff, i can only presume that all the works are carried out during the night or early morning. We played the Championship course on Friday & Sunday and found this to be second to the Premier course which we played on the Saturday. Its a shame that the greens were not looked after better as this could add to the course's.
The hotel i cannot fault apart from the service which was terrible, the reception staff were the only plus point for the hotel. The restaurant staff were very poor and unhelpful, i was in a group of 18 and they just seemed put want to put us in the corner out of the way from all other guests, i dont have a problem with this but i think the must of forgot about us. On one night some of the guys asked for bread for there soup and we were told we had to pay an extra £1.75 per slice although they never received the bread rolls. The drinks are over priced @ the bar when the bar staff could be bothered to serve us. When a few of the guys got back late to the hotel they were told they could not have a drink as they had not placed there card behind reception when they said they would do it then they were told it was too late and thay could not have a drink all this despite us spending over £800,00 on drink in the golf bar on Friday afternoon. I personally overheard one of the managers saying this was the biggest total ever.. Breakfast we had simalar issues with the staff when we asked for more butter or sugar for the tables, they looked at us gone out. The rooms were spot on and my overall rating of the hotel has been based on the service only. The late night bar staff & restaurant staff need to go on a customer service training course. I would be cautious to stay again.

Booked 2 day spa with lunch and a massage through lastminute.com.

Overall we had a fabulous day and loved it and both agreed we'd definitly return. But there were a few small details through the day that niggled and let it down.

When we arrived we checked in and as per a previous reviewer despite being saying we'd never been we weren't shown round, told where our lunch would be or anything. But no great shakes as when we were wandering around helpful staff directed us.

There is a lovely relaxation room, dark and cosy, although given the number of guests they had booked in - it was clearly too small. There is a small lounge with complimentary tea and coffee - not as comfy and felt very hotelly - like they realise they are short of space and have found another room and filled with furniture from meeting rooms.

The pool is large, but as its part of the hotel rather than spa can get filled with kids, there are a couple of saunas, steam rooms and an ice room. It was down here that the lack of detail shows. The sauna had no bucket of water to put water on the hot rocks. Both the steam room and 'aroma' steam room were pumped full of eucalyptus, and having only been given one towel - the lack of spare dry towels anywhere was irritating. There was also the moment the cleaner started filling his mop bucket from the pool.....

The changing rooms are spacious, but there is no privacy - one changing cubicle and nowhere else to hide if you're shy. Here also at a spa I like to see nice bottles of shower gel and body wash, not big plastic minging ecolab ones - it ruins the look and feel. There was also black mould in one of the showers - unacceptable.

The lunch was lovely, although served in the conference part of the hotel which meant a quick jaunt outside in our robes and slippers.

And the hot stone massage......AMAZING!!!!

As I said, overall good - but could do better

I have stayed at this hotel a few times before and found it to be very acceptable and easy. Hence the reason for a return trip with some friends for a weekend of relaxing, arrive, park the car, drink, eat, sleep, drink, eat etc and not get in car until leaving!!
That plan completely ruined in one easy sentence from receptionist, "sorry we don't have any tables available for dinner!" followed by "there are some nice places to eat in the village".
It didn't help that the place we went in the village was crap! (Recommended by receptionist!) so with plans ruined this hotel was never going to get a good review, but rest of experience is ok.

Room Tip: Book dinner when you book hotel!!

I stayed mid week with my husband and toddler. The rooms are lovely and well appointed. The staff were rather unhelpful and did have a tendency to look through you when you were waiting for service. The spa was again a great facility but there was a lack of locker keys, and the pool was full of kids doing back flips into the pool, there was no lifeguard even at the specified childrens times. The hotel was spotlessly clean, could not fault the housekeeping. Breakfast was expensive with a poor selection of food and they served my daughters eggs on a scalding plate and did not warn us so she burned her hand. Beware that they charge high prices for everything, £10 for 24 hrs wifi, £4.55 for a pot of winnings tea. The location is great and views stunning.

We came here for a weekend escape and boy was it an escape. Although the hotel appeared busy, they seemed to manage the demand really well. The bar was welcoming and warm with great service. Drinks a little rich, but you get what you pay for. Nibbles and table service, perfect. Dinner quality good and service, under the circumstances of a full restaurant all to an expected standard. Having read previous reviews I can't help but think that they may have caught the hotel on a bad day. After all, don't we all have them. We will be visiting again soon.

Just awful! Paid a lot of money for us both to have a spa day with lunch.

Receptionist very unhelpful, had to ask her for robes, she didn't tell us when and where lunch would be and didn't even check that we were booked in! We have booked a day there and spent less than 2 hours there.

Cold thermal showers with a smell of urine, nobody showed us around even though we told them we had never been before.

Would not recommend this place at all - was more like a council run pool with a tiny sauna and they charge a small fortune!

Spacious rooms and great views over golf course and hills. Didnt use facilities and spent most of time working but enjoyed the stay wishing I was on the adjacent golf course. Got a good deal on price - food average but everything else fine except having to pay for wi-fi - a bit outdated policy
