“golf trip”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

stayed last weekend on a golf trip with a group of ten, check in was quick and efficient, rooms were pleasant, clean and warm. We played both golf courses during our stay and everyone thought the premier course was the best and most challenging. The evening meal was very good as was the breakfast, and the service was excellent. Special thanks to phil who looked after our party in the restaurant, and then sorted transport and drove himself and our group to the premier course

Lovely hotel and grounds. Rooms very nice and clean. We came earlier in the year and had a wonderful time. This time the problems started with the service in the bar. Ordering food at the bar, even when its empty, is pretty useless. I got mine long after my friends had eaten, it was only a bowl of chips, expensive at that, £6.50 with a pot of tea for one. My Husband enjoyed his golf, glad he was happy. There was a mix up with our booking with last min.com,so be careful if anyone books with them. We booked our room to include 2 complimentary treatments, but in reality it was buy one, get one half price. So we just had the one treatment. The spa receptionist wasn't very friendly and welcoming-as you would expect from this sort of hotel. I was also quite disappointed with my facial, although it was lovely, the girl was a smoker and the smell on her fingers overpowered the lovely decleor scents. I felt it best to mention this to her, although I don't think it was welcome advice. We went outside the hotel for our evening meal for local pub grub - was excellent and great price for a fab steak. Breakfast service although very nice, waitress was slow to take your order. Seemed to be short staffed. We would come again on a special offer but staff need to pull their socks up a little.

Thought I'd share my experience of booking a spa break for me and six of my friends in case anyone else is thinking of booking one. Booking was relatively pain free through their website - booked the mad hatter spa package which at £114 didn't seem unreasonable. This includes twin room, 30 treatment, cream tea with glass of champers, full use of spa facilities for the day, 3 course meal in the evening and then breakfast the following morning. For the spa days you can arrive from 10am (although you can't check in till 2pm). We got there approx. 11.30 and we were told one of our rooms were ready so we were able to go in there. If not you can just put your stuff in a locker in the changing rooms. We were asked if we had booked a table for the restaurant for the evening which we hadn't as I'd assumed one would be set aside for you if they know you are having a meal there that night as part of the package but obviously not so if you are going for the package make sure you book a head (it says on your confirmation details to book your treatment times but not your restaurant table). The only had left 6.00pm or 9.15pm but luckily we were happy to have 9.15pm as we were not going out anywhere else.

We were really impressed with the hotel itself, really looks like a 4 star hotel and the rooms were all lovely. Only disappointed really that there was a charge for Wi-Fi and also that the TV in the room had about 2 channels. We then headed down to the spa where you pick up a pack of robe, slippers and towel so you don't need to bring anything with you. The spa facilities are OK, the swimming pool is nice and then there are about five different steam rooms at the side of the pool you can use. You need to book your treatment times in advance and we got a choice of either facial or back massage which were both excellent. The girls there were friendly enough but seemed to be pretty rushed and we were made to feel like naughty school girls for being a couple of minutes late.
Once we'd had our treatments, it was time for the cream tea which was really wonderful! We were took down to one the conference rooms where we had our own waiter who serviced up some a lovely scone with jam, cream etc and then a glass of champers, this was all in candle light with soothing music so it really felt like part of the spa experience.

There is also a coffee lounge in the spa where you can just go in and out through the day and help yourself to teas/coffees and then next to that is a relaxation rooms which is dark with sun loungers around the room and soothing music and candle light with is lovely.

After that we got changed and headed down to the restaurant which was obviously full to bursting and we could only see about 3 waiting on staff. We were then twenty minutes before we even got a menu and that's really how the whole night went. If you are on the package then you get a set menu to choose from or you pay a supplement and choose from the main menu. We stuck with the set menu and the choices were fine. Most of us had chosen tomato soup for starter and after an hour then the four bowls of cold tomato soup arrived, not even any bread to go with it. By this point it was nearly 10.30 so we were too hungry to send it back. The mains were another half an hour after that and they were all of good quality although the portions were small and there were no vegetables to go with them. Another half an hour later the puddings arrived and they were delicious. By this point we had been in the restaurant for three hours - it was the longest most drawn out meal I have ever had! There were obviously just no where near enough staff to cope with the amount of people in the restaurant which was a shame because they were obviously run off their feet and stressed out too. I would also add that the cost of the drinks in the restaurant are completely exorbitant. You expect restaurant to be expensive for wine but these prices just take the mickey, cheapest bottle of house wine is £24 and my friend ordered a glass of red wine which was £7.40. Then the bill came and it was immediately obvious that the large table of male golfers had got our bill of our £60 and we had got their £150 for pints of Amstell! We complained, the waiters gathered and scratched their heads, they brought another bill which still contained many pint of Amstell, we complained again about the bill and whole long winded experience (by this point it was nearly 12.30am) and fair play to them they wiped our bill to zero. I honestly think they just had no clue what we had drunk at all.

The next morning we went for breakfast and there is a small buffet are and then you order a cooked breakfast from the kitchen. I ordered a vegetarian breakfast and it was really nothing to write home about. It was advertised as coming with a vegetarian sausage which in reality was one of those really cheap and nasty vege sausages made out of a vegetable mush and it was burnt too which I don't think helped. Why can't hotels just just quorn sausages? I will never know.
The kitchen made a mess of our order, my friends were brought out the wrong orders so we had to wait while that was all sorted out - that just summed up the service in the restaurant which I have to say it dreadful - I don't think if they'd had ten times the staff available it would have been enough . It seems that Macdonald think that scrimping on staff in the restaurant is okay but I , like many other people, hate poor service and because of that I don't think I'd come back to this hotel even though I thought the spa facilities were excellent. There are plenty of spa hotels to choose from in the North West. I would also add this hotel is mainly full of golfing parties and as such in the evening it had a very rowdy atmosphere in the bar and as a group of women we didn't feel comfortable going in. We were woken up at 3am by some drunken idiots running down the corridors shouting, I think a lot of the groups were stag do's so you get the picture.
Real shame about the service because this place could be a gem if they put that right - won't be returning though

I have just spent 4 days at Portal with 8 of my friends on a golf trip. On arrival we ordered tea, coffee and sandwiches and were surprised to find the prices were quite high - £4 for drinks and £9 for the sandwiches. Needless to say we didn't have any other snacks there.
The service was a bit slow, but that was because there wasn't enough staff, not because they weren't interested, in fact they were pleasant & polite.
We played on both the Championship and Premier courses. The greens could have been better on both courses but they weren't bad enough to spoil our enjoyment of either course. The Championship course was a good test of golf with some really picturesque features. Greens staff were courtious. The pro shop at the Championship course was stocked with the usual offering for men, and buggies were £25 -£30.
The meals in the restaurant were very good with plenty of choice and well presented. The restaurant staff were very accomodating and polite, and we couldn't fault the service.
I can't comment on the spa as none of us used the facilities.
The Premiership course had a fabulous golf shop, packed full of ladies golf gear which was up to date and reasonably priced - definately worth a visit. The lady Pro was Judy, and was really helpful & welcoming. We had lunch at the Premier course every day as the prices, food and service were all very good.
Overall we really enjoyed our 4 day break and would recommend it to other groups for a ahort golf trip.

Having stayed at the Portal before we were looking forward to a relaxing stay in pleasant surroundings with the usual quality expected of a Macdonald 4* Hotel. This was a bank holiday booking and this is a golf hotel so no surprise that most of the guests were adorned in a variety of matching pastel jumpers or shocking dayglow trousers, however what was a surprise was the noise levels within the hotel from shouting, screaming guests through to 3 am in the morning. Oh well at least we had a MacDonald Signature breakfast to look forward to, being as advertised, prepared with only the finest of ingredients. Except of course they didn't have the ingredients at least no smoked haddock, what about salmon then - well no, OK what about the sausage - does it contain yeast? Urrm, not sure and apparently can't find out. Not really a 4 star service, in fact the breakfast service seemed somewhat chaotic all round some people being served the the wrong orders, others not being served at all , we had to ask twice to have our orders taken. The final surprise was the response from the hotel reception the following morning who appeared completely oblivious to the previous nights frolicks. One to miss I think next Bank Holiday unless you are a member of the pastel jumper set.

I've just come back from a long weekend @ The Macdonald Portal Hotel were i played golf for 3x days. The 2x courses were lovely and in great condition except the greens, in the whole weekend we never got to see any green staff, i can only presume that all the works are carried out during the night or early morning. We played the Championship course on Friday & Sunday and found this to be second to the Premier course which we played on the Saturday. Its a shame that the greens were not looked after better as this could add to the course's.
The hotel i cannot fault apart from the service which was terrible, the reception staff were the only plus point for the hotel. The restaurant staff were very poor and unhelpful, i was in a group of 18 and they just seemed put want to put us in the corner out of the way from all other guests, i dont have a problem with this but i think the must of forgot about us. On one night some of the guys asked for bread for there soup and we were told we had to pay an extra £1.75 per slice although they never received the bread rolls. The drinks are over priced @ the bar when the bar staff could be bothered to serve us. When a few of the guys got back late to the hotel they were told they could not have a drink as they had not placed there card behind reception when they said they would do it then they were told it was too late and thay could not have a drink all this despite us spending over £800,00 on drink in the golf bar on Friday afternoon. I personally overheard one of the managers saying this was the biggest total ever.. Breakfast we had simalar issues with the staff when we asked for more butter or sugar for the tables, they looked at us gone out. The rooms were spot on and my overall rating of the hotel has been based on the service only. The late night bar staff & restaurant staff need to go on a customer service training course. I would be cautious to stay again.

Booked 2 day spa with lunch and a massage through lastminute.com.

Overall we had a fabulous day and loved it and both agreed we'd definitly return. But there were a few small details through the day that niggled and let it down.

When we arrived we checked in and as per a previous reviewer despite being saying we'd never been we weren't shown round, told where our lunch would be or anything. But no great shakes as when we were wandering around helpful staff directed us.

There is a lovely relaxation room, dark and cosy, although given the number of guests they had booked in - it was clearly too small. There is a small lounge with complimentary tea and coffee - not as comfy and felt very hotelly - like they realise they are short of space and have found another room and filled with furniture from meeting rooms.

The pool is large, but as its part of the hotel rather than spa can get filled with kids, there are a couple of saunas, steam rooms and an ice room. It was down here that the lack of detail shows. The sauna had no bucket of water to put water on the hot rocks. Both the steam room and 'aroma' steam room were pumped full of eucalyptus, and having only been given one towel - the lack of spare dry towels anywhere was irritating. There was also the moment the cleaner started filling his mop bucket from the pool.....

The changing rooms are spacious, but there is no privacy - one changing cubicle and nowhere else to hide if you're shy. Here also at a spa I like to see nice bottles of shower gel and body wash, not big plastic minging ecolab ones - it ruins the look and feel. There was also black mould in one of the showers - unacceptable.

The lunch was lovely, although served in the conference part of the hotel which meant a quick jaunt outside in our robes and slippers.

And the hot stone massage......AMAZING!!!!

As I said, overall good - but could do better
