“Beautiful cottage, fabulous location & a brilliant warm welcome!”
Reviewed 2 May 2009

My husband & I stayed in Wellhope View, the 2 bed conversion of John & Jane's at Hudgill for our honeymoon in April. We've wanted to have a holiday in England for a few years now, but it's always been so expensive, so it was wonderful to have this gorgeous conversion to stay in at such a reasonable price.

First of all, both John & Jane made us feel really welcome when we arrived, without being obtrusive. Then we got into the cottage... stunning. It's been beautifully renovated to the highest standard - underfloor heating made it extra special. The room was lovely, with an en-suite with a brill shower. And the views from the lounge... breathtaking.

We were really lucky with the weather as the sun shone all week, and the location is perfect for wanderings regardless of how unfit you are! Made us wish we had a dog...! Alston's a lovely town with everything you need, but to get to the Lakes or the 'civilisation' of Newcastle (!!) would have been easy - had we not wanted to just stroll about!

I would recommend this place to everyone - and have been doing so!

Everything was right about this place - we were even lucky with the weather! Can't always rely on that in the North Pennines, I don't think, but the cottage and the location would have been great even in the rain/snow.

We were there for Easter Bank Holiday weekend, staying in the smaller half ofthe barn conversion (Wellhope Cottage) - which consists of a twin room, bathroom, open plan living/dining room/kitchen, and small garden downstairs, and a double room and shower room upstairs. The house is warm, with underfloor heating and a log-burning stove (which we didn't need). The owners, Jane & John, are kind and friendly without being intrusive. Everything was in a good state of repair and clean, and the cottage is well equipped with microwave (and conventional oven of course), dishwasher, washing machine, flatscreen TV/DVD/CD player, and a fridge stocked with a few essentials that included eggs from the owner's hens....if you've never had a truly free-range egg before, that's something else to look forward to! Hardboil some of them and take them with you to the moor on top of the hill opposite, where a clear day gives views out towards Hadrians Wall and Northumberland, and sit eating them listening to the curlews and looking out for the elusive black grouse.

The best thing about the area is the walking, the views, the fresh air; but attractions like Kilhope Lead Mine and the narrow-gauge railway at Alston (ride the 3 miles to Kirkaugh, walk down the hill to the river, where there is a lovely spot for a picnic and for kids to play) are worth a look too, especially good for children.

The only thing I can think of to find fault with was the number of Bank Holiday motorcyclists who make the journey out to the Alston area especially to irritate visitors and frighten locals as they attempt to kill themselves on the twisting B roads. But it was a very minor irritant, and no reflection on the cottage or the area.

We booked this barn conversion as our base for walking sections of the Pennine Way. It is set in lovely, quiet and peaceful surroundings. Hosts John and Jane have converted their barn into 2 holiday cottages and provided an excellent standard of accommodation, with attention to all the little details. We had the larger of the 2, Middle Fell View, which had a spacious combined kitchen/lounge/diner, a double bedroom and a shower/cloakroom on the ground floor, and 2 good sized double bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Excellent central heating, backed up by a lovely log burning stove (logs, kindling and firelighters provided) with an abundance of good quality equipment, TV/DVD, modern cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, radio, coffee maker and welcome pack of groceries, and free-range eggs to boot... A place we'd love to return to in the future.
