“No trains, so no Joy”

I was very disappointed to find that no trains were in operation, the cafe, shop and even the toilets were closed. There were many angry potential fare-paying passengers; what a missed revenue earning opportunity. Alston itself was equally disappointing, with many closed shops. The one high-spot was lunch at The Angel Hotel which was superb. One benefit of our visit was the great scenery alongside the road from Penrith

Having spent the day at Killhope Museum and having had a lovely time, we took a chance on dashing to Alston. We just made it to catch the last Train from Alston to Linley and back.

The Steam train is a thing of beauty and wonderfully restored, this is a great trip for adults and children alike.

We bought a Family ticket for ourselves and the Grandkids and spent a lovely hour watching the scenery and enjoying the Train which was exceptionally clean and comfortable.

There is no point to this trip other than to enjoy it and we certainly did. The Volunteers who run this make this a splendid pleasure. Enquire before you go about running times. Parking is free but the Car Park closes at 5 as people need to get home.

Visited here with my family while on holiday. Sadly we wanted a steam train, but due to shortage of volunteers they had to put a diesel train on, due to this received a discount. Carriages clean. Views are great. Lovely railway

This is a lovely find, tucked away in Alston, most tourists would drive by without realising it's there.

A great spot, a nice shop, cool trains. But the cafe lets it down. It only served tea or coffee...no food. It doesn't take much to provide a bubbling pot of soup or Sandwiches...

The town is an easy walk so park here to explore the town too.

Very scenic ride in comfortable clean carriages either purpose built at Alston or refurbished for their role. Friendly informative volunteer staff. Possibility of walking in one direction on the parallel footpath and taking train on the other - n.b. downhill from Alston & uphill back. Refreshments and free car parking available at Alston station
