This was the third time we have stayed at Lovelady in the Shieling cottage.
Although you can self cater in this cottage and others,as well as staying in the hotel itself we opt for dinner bed and breakfast as the food is second to none.
Nothing is too much trouble, the staff are so helpful and we have come to treat it as a home from home.
The countryside around Alston is stunning and the autumn colours were spectacular.
I would highly recommend the Lovelady experience.
Do go on the website and see for yourselves the fabulous accommodation and superb menus you will return time after time to experience the delights and the fantastic value offered for one or two nights stay.
Just phone direct and get the best value for your money, lots of deals to be had especially last minute.
Enjoy.

Room Tip: The two bedroomed cottage is great for disabled but there is a step up into it apart from that once...

We have just returned from a night at the hotel.
The hotel is in a beautiful location, although be prepared for a long drive through rugged country if approaching from the west. It could be interesting in bad weather!
We had taken advantage of a Travelzoo deal, which meant our stay was good value for money. The hotel is elegant and relaxed and we didn't mind it being a little worn around the edges.
I enjoyed our evening meal, we had the 7 course Taster menu. the lamb was particularly nice. However, The member of staff responsible for taking orders for dinner and wine would have done better if she spent less time joking with other guests and more time paying attention to getting things done in the correct manner. We were given a wine list, but she didn't take our wine order. We were shown to our table, and had to ask for wine. We ordered a bottle of red, which by then had no time to breath, and therefore was not served at its very best.
At the end of our meal I asked for a Cappuccino coffee. We were told by the waitress that someone had lost the nozzle off the coffee machine, but they were heating some milk to make me one. What I was given was the most disgusting cup of coffee I have ever been given. It was a cup of milky coffee with a large amount of cocoa floating on it. Totally Undrinkable.

Dear Christine,
There are occasions when Grumps feels aggrieved and then there are genuine faults when you have to hold your hands up and apologise. Your review falls into the latter group.
Our staff are dismayed that you did not get the service you expected and for that we apologise.
Our coffee machine just broke down and our staff tried to circumnavigate things rather than offer a caffetiere as an alternative. You know there is always an element of doing wrong for doing right.
However we are pleased that other elements of your stay were enjoyable.

Great weekend, customer focused staff and excellent food. Quaint hotel set in relaxing surroundings a wine list to die for and food to match. The walks along the river are fabulous and the whole experience was just what we needed. The hotel is beginning to look tired but this only adds to the charm of the occasion and we will defiantly be going back. The staff make you feel you are special and can't do enough for you. A truly lovely experience and complemented with an award winning breakfast, ( the kedgeree was amazing ) as was the chef.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a view and we weren't disappointed. If you want to take your own wine t...

Just returned from a two night stay at this amazing hotel which offers everything you could wish for. Beautiful building tastefully decorated and furnished, friendly staff who bend over backwards to please, excellent breakfast menu and piping hot food. On our first night we experienced the gourmet taster menu which was outstanding, having a daughter who is a Sousse Chef she would have been very impressed with the tastes and presentation just as we were, it was artistry on a plate ( or tile! ). A particular mention for the young staff who served us and also Gail who was an absolute star. The rooms were warm and the bed the most comfortable we have slept in outside our own and we had a wonderful view from our room.
I read other reviews and wonder what some people want, it's the country with limited off road lighting, country smells and sounds and pretty horrendous weather conditions which take their toll on buildings simple as that! If people want the Ritz go stay there, pay their prices and good luck!
Give this lovely hotel a try you won't be disappointed we weren't and we'll be going back, thank you Lovelady.

me and my girlfriend stopped for two nights and just had the bed and breakfast which i have got to say was very very good. on arriving we found the premises difficult to find ,mainly because it was late afternoon and the hotel sign just off the main road does not stand out .and the drive along the path up to the hotel is not lit up so be carefull because it is narrow. the hotel itself is nice and yes does need a bit off tlc in places but that is all because we couldnt fault anything else and would definitely go back but most probably the summer to appreciate the countryside around the place,if your looking for somewhere that is peaceful, in nice suroundings and away from towns and villages this fits the bill

We stayed for 2 nights bed and breakfast. The food was lovely and well cooked but personal preference I don't like my food cooked n butter as ive a dairy problem but because it was only the mushrooms on my breakfast it wasn't worth mentioning and I can live without confrontation.
Cant comment on the dinner menu as we were told we would have to order dinner 24 hrs in advance and there wasnt any bar meals/menu
The room was nice and neutrally decorated but the view wasnt up to much from where we were all I could see was the side/back of a wall.
The sink doesn't drain...I think someone has attempted to repair it and not finished the job.
The staff though i have to say were friendly and attentive always pleasant.
Bring your own hangers as 4 hangers for 2 people isn't very helpful
I know the owner who calls himself an 'old grump' is going to pull everything ive said apart as he has done anyone else who has dared to give negative feedback as he wont accept he can do anything wrong and whinge that I should have approached him but he isn't called an old grump for no reason he is not an approachable person....but im sure he will us all he is :)
If and when someone buys this property a little money spent on it to upgrade it and they'll have a top notch hotel.

Room Tip: sorry I cant advise on which are the best rooms ...but I can advise there is no lift so if you have...

Dear aitchies,

As you have invited Grumps to reply, then so be it!
Actually I am not too sure what you are complaining about! It appears you don't like mushrooms cooked in butter, did not have an evening meal and we don't ask you if you want dinner 24hrs. before so don't understand that. Most reviewers rave over the meals but you chose not to have one.
Liked the room but not the view and the water did not drain. The plugs are push down and up so if you did this then they would flow away perfectly. And then suddenly it needs tlc.
I am not going to say anything but will let our readers come to their own conclusions.

We booked this hotel to stay one night at on returning from Scotland and driving back down South.
Had checked the Tripadvisor reviews which were very good, so seemed an excellent choice for us.
When you arrive down a winding driveway with sheep on either side and stunning scenery, then pulling up outside the hotel is all very impressive. Rooms downstairs were tastefully decorated and our bedroom and views were jaw dropping. All in all we were set for an enjoyable stay.
However, on closer inspection you realise the hotel is in desperate need of some tlc to get it back to its glory days. The dining room decor is very dated ( like stepping back into the 1980's). Parts of the building outside are crumbling and falling off, paintwork on windows and frames weathered and peeling of exposing wood, and carpets beginning to get old and musty. Curtains, ripped and shabby in places. A walk in the garden and through the archway which had been left overgrown and uncared for. A simple ten minute job with the garden shears would had resolved this!
We had read good reviews on the food, and a series of awards in the reception area confirms this.
So we had quite high hopes there, and was not disappointed. The food would not seem out of place in a top London restaurant or Hotel. It was amazing!
What we did not like though was the ambiance. We felt some light music would not go amiss, as the restaurant seemed lifeless and library quite. So much so, that diners felt they should whisper to one another.
All in all, the whole place looks like it needs a bit of Tlc and updating.
They have the fantastic food, location and impressive building and garden. But without an injection of money into updating the interior a bit, maintaining the outside a lot and creating a bit more of an ambiance inside ( ie music, warming fires ect ), they will lose the more discerning guests and have to rely on the budget holiday brigade. As eventually prices will have to reflect all that is wrong with this hotel.
Bring it back to its former glory!

Hello Tracy M,

Grumpy old grumps here is back to reply to your review.

First we are pleased that you enjoyed your dining experience even though it was in this awful dated (some might say traditional and elegant) dining room without piped muzac {that drives some guests mad).

You know a true country house hotel is a sought after place where, as you quite rightly observed, is tucked away in the countryside and is prized for its peace and tranquility and you want music playing in the dining room and library!

We have spent a lot of time and money tending the garden this year so we will pass your comments on to our gardener although I am not quite sure where this arch is.

As to the fires we are awaiting the arrival of the chimney sweep to do his work removing the residents nests in the stacks. I assure you of a very smoky welcome in the library if we lit them now but come back next month and all will be roaring. As an aside the temperatures just reached 22 degrees yesterday. Do you really want fires?

Finally the curtains are in process of being changed and who ripped them? guess what it was the guests!!!

We do our best in these most difficult times. As usual if you have a problem or gripe talk to us. We will understand!
Grumps
