This hotel is rather anomalous- exceptional evening food, choice of breakfast food excellent but let down by it's cooking, well appointed and attractive public rooms, bedrooms that are comfortable (especially the bed) but need a watch on the furnishings and the buildings themselves ( including the garden), that are very much in need of a lot of care and attention - immediate in some cases e.g. the windows, the balcony and the walls. The house is set amidst surrounding countryside that is peaceful and beautiful. Quite a distance to travel to other areas of interest, however. So, strange, really, that some things could be SO good and others very much lacking. Reading the many plates that adorn the dining room, it would appear that major attraction is the food. The 7 course Gourmet dinner with wine is exceptional - expensive, however. Breakfast is served- choice is very good, but why is it that the standard of the evening meals is not continued via the cooking of breakfast ? Ours was very much over-cooked and, really, of much less standard than would be cooked at home ( well, in my home, anyway). This was very disappointing. The staff are very pleasant and attentive and seem to work very hard. There were aspects of the visit that made it a pleasant experience - chiefly the location, our bedroom and the excellent dinner- whether I would make a return visit is doubtful, as, for the costs involved (the hotel is quite expensive) I would wish for all-round high quality, which this rather tired hotel, I'm afraid does not give.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main house have a range of prices- the ones at the front facing the river are nice. Al...

The hotel is in a very lovely setting and ideally placed for exploring the North Pennines. We stayed in one of the self-catering cottages, but used the hotel for breakfast and dinner. The first night of our stay was a little chaotic, due to staff shortages, but the service was friendly and the food was excellent. The wine list was also very good with some interesting bottles and very fairly priced. On our second night we had the 7 course taster menu which we could not fault, the cooking was to a very high standard. Breakfast was one of the best I've had in a hotel.
It's just a shame that the bit we saw of the main hotel fell short of the standard set by the chef. The garden needed tending, the patio area overlooking the main lawn was, frankly, a mess. Our accommodation was very comfortable with a well appointed kitchen area, however the bathroom could have been cleaner. I was tempted to give a lower overall rating but that would be to the detriment of the kitchen and the hard working, friendly staff.

We took advantage of a special offer of one night B&B with the 7 course taster menu including wines to compliment each course and we stayed at the end of May 2014. The setting of the hotel is gorgeous, so peaceful. Of course there are plenty of places of interest more or less on the door step but this hotel is a great escape. The landscape was lush with lots of wild flowers growing and interesting bird life down by the river. We enjoyed lovely walks along the river banks there. The hotel is a little tired perhaps in places but we loved the lounge and the library with comfy chairs and sofas and a sense of escape. We get tired of the plastic and chrome decor of modern hotels and we felt very much at home in this country house. Our room was spacious and very comfortable with a fabulous bathroom and shower! We slept with the windows wide open listening to birdsong and the river flowing along outside which gave a lovely sense of well being. We do live in Cumbria in a rural area but we still really appreciated the total peace and beautiful surroundings here. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and we also enjoyed the company of other guests. It was all so refreshing as well as highly enjoyable. And then there was THE FOOD! amazing. The dinner was divine and the breakfast was the best we have ever eaten! And believe me we have eaten a lot of breakfasts all over the UK and rest of the world! The choice and quality of all the food we ate were astoundingly good. Suffice to say we are planning a return visit but next time we will stay two nights! This is a country house hotel with personality as well as very fine food.

We spent a night at this hotel in May 2014. We actually got an offer of a free room, which of course was interesting. Having recently visited other hotels in the Lake District we were able to make comparisons. Guests who we met there thought highly of the place. The room we were allocated was below standard in my opinion. Breakfast was ok but nothing to rave about. I did complain about the quality of the fish I ordered for the main course. It was below the standard I am acustomed to. All in all Ok but nothing to rave about. Not for me anyway.

Room Tip: No lift. May not e good for older people

Location, staff, accommodation all get full marks for friendliness, cleanliness, and comfort. However the icing on the cake is the quality of the dining experience. The breakfast is exceptionally good . The 7 course taster menu with matched wines was a pleasure with every mouthful. A chef to be commended. The friendliness of other diners was also refreshing. This was our second visit and I have a third planned in the autumn. Congratulations on the standard of customer care .

Just had a wonderful stay at The Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel. The welcome was warm an friendly, the seven course taster menu, with matching wines, excellent and the rooms well equipped and comfortable. The breakfast was also one of the beat we've had in any hotel, and that includes some five star ones.
