My husband and I had a two day weekend stay at Lovelady Shield. Had to phone for directions after our sat nav directed us to the 'back of beyond'. Lovely ambiance, very friendly staff, but the highlight of the weekend was the food. Friday night had the 'taster menu'. This was fantastic and each course came with a specific wine. Saturday night we ate there again. Once more the food was wonderful. Beautifully cooked and presented. Would recommend this hotel for the food alone. The hotel was nice, with nice squashy settees and chairs in the lounge. The only downside was the town of Alston. It was dirty, and most of the pubs were abandoned. There were more shops that were closed and the whole town looked dirty. But overall our stay was fantastic.

I purchased a wowcher voucher for a 2 night stay. Upon a arrival the approach is impressive with the narrow drive way over the river nent. With old and young cattle and sheep on the field to the side.
Once I walked through the door was slightly confused as no real reception and no one to great guests. When finally shown to my room I was slightly disappointed as looked nothing like the pics on the website. Was a very basic room with a lumpy bed. As the room was up 2 flights of stairs the water pressure was appalling. It took near on 15 minutes to wash my hair as it was more of a dribble than a shower.
The bathroom was tiny which was made even more so by the oversized sink that was a tight squeeze to stand in front of properly. The toilet brush holder also had a lovely pool of brown water at the bottom of it.
A lovely original sash window opened to a rather dirty windowsill, covered in dirt and bird feathers.

At the side of the property overlooks the long garden which has a seated area to enjoy the view and sun, how're this was spoilt by the constant vile smell due to the cesspit being located in the same area.

The staff were very pleasant and clearly work very hard and the location was very pleasant, however whether I would make a return visit is doubtful as without the voucher discount I would find it to be expensive and doesn't warrant the prices charged

The food and service here at a voucher price make this hotel unbeatable value for money.
The business is in its maturity stage with investment being kept to a minimum, and sales promotions attracting healthy occupancy rates.
Once you take the business phase into account, the irritations become less important.
The 7 course gourmet meal is highly organised and inventive as you like with great flavours and presentation, served by sincerely cheerful locals grateful for real jobs in a happy environment.
The wine list deserves special mention, skilfully put together by a oenophile, with plenty of choices by the glass and half bottles.
The breakfast is magnificent, with an extensive choice, but the poached eggs both mornings were not runny as requested.
What intrigued us was how the owners contrived and succeeded in creating more of a house party spirit with guests getting together after dinner to swap stories about their day, giving recommendations for the local attractions.

Room Tip: Room 16 was at the rear and quiet

7 course gourmet night with luxury room booked with voucher.
absolutely loved everything about our stay, a leisurely paced high quality evening of gourmet food with matching wines. The food was presented well with some trendy touches such as cubes of chilli.
I highly recommend this hotel and local staff.
well done

Nice touch of sparkling water bottlea d glasses on dresser but when opened itwasonly tap water, not wwhat is expected, rather dissapointed with the look of somewhere "posh" and on closer inspection its not all as it appears. Needs a good dose of TLC

This is a period hotel with a true country cosy feel, in a lovely rural setting. We were on a 2 night stay bought as a gift (voucher deal). Alston is a lovely little town with lots of old world character which has that not changed in a century feel. Excellent local shops, pubs etc

The public areas of the country house are lovely with lots of personal touches. Food was a real treat, esp the 7 course evening menu. However when we asked about the suggested wines to match the courses (£25) and purchasing by the glass we were told that they were not available. i asked another younger staff some basic questions about the house and she didn't know. Bit poor. However our real gripe was the room. it was comfortable but decor rather tired - again not a problem really. However the shower was at best inadequate - perhaps low water pressure we were on the 4th floor. on the 2nd morning of our stay i told the maid there was no water and she simply sighed! A regular guest said that was not uncommon and that it would come back on again soon - after waiting over an hour gave up! Would stay here again - and would agree value for money if you are on a special deal, would not be happy to pay full price.

Room Tip: Check which room you are in - there are a lot of stairs!

Agree with the various points made by other reviewers especially Tuppenny 42. The 7 course taster menu was excellent accompanied by nice wines but the breakfast was very poor. The bacon was hard and overcooked so the slices were stuck together and the sausage was greatly overcooked and tasteless. I wish I'd tried the eggs Benedict instead. Difficult to understand how there could be so much difference in the standard of the 2 meals. We booked through Travel ZOO and it was good value for money but it was supposed to be a luxury room and it wasn't that. The tap in the bathroom moved round when you turned it on and the shower was very loose and wobbley. There was only enough for 1 cup of coffee each in the room and one small soap. A little penny pinching I think. When we went to settle up for the extra drinks we'd had they tried to charge us for sparkling water that we hadn't had. With only 5 couples in the dining rooms it's an unacceptable mistake. The hotel is listed as being in Alston but it is 2 and a half miles outside the village. However the setting is idyllic and peaceful with lovely views. the hotel has lots of character and the service was very good for the one evening that we were there. Our stay did represent good value for money, it such a shame about the few little problems
