“Basic but ticked all our boxes!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2008

We stayed at the Alston House Hotel on bank holiday weekend in August. The village of Alston itself is abit non-descript, full of walkers/hikers etc. but there are a few pubs you can go to on a night for a few quiet drinks.

We used the hotel as a stop-over on the way to the Lakes and it met all our requirements. We wanted somewhere cheap, cheerful and clean to stay and this met all our needs. It was £70 for the room for one night and included cereal, fruit salad, toast & full english breakfast which was fantastic. The rooms are basic but are fine as somewhere to rest your head. The lady who seemed to run the hotel was very friendly.

We were warned by someone who had stayed there previously that there is sometimes noise on a weekend as the hotel does weddings/christenings etc. During our stay it was noisy the afternoon we arrived, but was fine (quiet) in the evening.

The restaurant in the hotel was fantastic (better than expected) but be warned it was fully booked so ring ahead and make a reservation. They offer two types of menus a set price menu which seemed good value for those on a tight budget, and then also an ala carte menu which was pricier. The surroundings were fantastic and definitely good value.

Overall I would recommend this hotel if you want clean and comfortable accommodation on a budget. I would go back and recommend to my family.

We stayed at the family-run Alston House for just one night but they went out of their way to make us feel welcome (even when we went downstairs for breakfast 90 minutes late!). Our room was very big and the bar/restuarant was really nice, serving good quality, contemporary food, much better than we expected from a small rural hotel. It was a cold day but I imagine that the beer garden is really nice on a sunny summer day, plus there are loads of private parking spaces (I hear that the restaurant gets realy busy on a Saturday night). Highly recommended.

We stayed in the Alston House Hotel for one night of a five day cycle trip from Sea to Sea. We arrived tired after a steep hill climb into the pennines and were looking forward to some good food and a good night's rest - we found both.

The couple who run the hotel really put themselves out for you. They found somewhere to store our bikes inside and put up with our request to change room (you need a long soak in a bath after a day's cycling). The room was bright and spacious with lovely thick towels and toiletries left out for us.

We had a drink in the quiet garden alongside the hotel and then ate a fantastic meal in the restaurant. We're vegetarian and were well catered for, the meat eaters in out party looked equally happy!

Of all the places we stayed on the trip, this is the one I'd come back to.
