“Excellent hotel, food and value”
Reviewed 28 August 2010

Stayed here while cycling coast to coast. Arrived 10 minutes before restaurant closed in the evening but the staff offered to keep it open for us if we wanted to have shower and change of clothes first. Excellent fillet steak and a first class breakfast the morning after.
Room was large and comfortable and my only small gripe was I couldn't get the shower to keep a constant tempertaure although my companion said he had no such problem. All the staf were really friendly and I thought the food, the accommodation and the service were all excellent and really good value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again (we stopped for lunch on the return trip and that was first rate as well!)

This really is an excellent B&B - spacious room and superb food. The evening meal was fantastic, using locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast was one of the best I've ever eaten in a B&B - local bacon and sausage, perfectly poached egg, just great! The owners were clear that they are still in the process of renovation and certainly the bathroom in our room was due a makeover, but it was clean and well equipped. Alston is a hidden gem - go there!

Stayed for 1 night during coast to coast cycle ride (booked for us by Saddle Skedaddle).
Rooms and food very good as described by the other reviews on this site.
BUT, we were told 2 days before arrival that there would be "some live music in the evening". This turned out to be a very loud disco which was held directly beneath our room, and in the garden overlooked by our windows, until 2am. The bedroom literally shook - sleep was impossible. Our friends in other rooms in the hotel also suffered from lack of sleep.
The owners were apologetic and explained that such parties are "only held about twice per month". If you are considering staying here, make very certain that there will be no such event during your stay. The hotel is not big enough to hold loud late night parties and other paying (to sleep) guests at the same time.

I've been staying at Alston House since Mike and Carol took over about three years ago. They have made it a very special place, and it keeps improving! The food is easily the best available in Alston, the atmosphere is friendly and informal and the rooms which have been upgraded are really clean, comfortable and reasonably priced too. There is free wi-fi access and Mike and Carol work very hard to ensure that your stay will be comfortable.

Probably the best small hotel I have stayed in recently. Owners are friendly and helpful, happily accommodating bikes and drying wet clothes. Our room was fantastic - huge and with a lovely view, and furnished really well with modern fittings and bedding, but retaining its period charm as part of an old building. The bathroom was similarly modern and very clean, with lovely locally made toiletries which were much admired by one of us! We were lucky enough to have dinner here too, which was also excellent, both in terms of quality of food and service - the best lamb my partner can remember eating, apparently! I'd definitely stay here again, and have paid twice the price for a similar standard of meals and accommodation elsewhere. We were only sorry we couldn't stay longer.

I booked the Alston House at the last minute looking for a place to stay to do a weekend walking in the North Pennines and would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting a comfortable stay in a friendly welcoming place.
Carole, the owner greeted us with a smile and went out of her way to make sure we had a good stay. The rooms are well presented and comfortable with comfortable beds and ensuite facilities. Breakfast is a good choice of cereals, fruit and juices plus a hearty Cumbrian breakfast to set you up for the day! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and the service is excellent.
We had an evening meal in the restaurant each evening and the food was lovely. We appreciated the half loaf of fresh warm bread as a starter. The bar serves a good range of wines and beers and is a popular place for locals. There was a group of 30 dining on the Saturday night and the staff were working really hard but still managed a smile for everyone.
To sum up - not the cheapest place to stay in Alston but certainly the best place I've stayed in. Highly recommended.

we stayed in Alston for the weekend. The weather was glorious and we ate in the restaurant for the three nights of the holiday. The food was good - especially the £8.75 special on Sunday -and the service excellent.
Would recommend and we were only sorry the hotel was fully booked so we could have stayed there.
