“True English values and hospitality”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

We stayed here last weekend, booking the trip through Secret Escapes otherwise it would have been extremely expensive. However, it was worth every penny. The service was polite, understated and perfect. The room (303) was spotlessly clean, a very comfortable bed, and had three large windows overlooking the lake. The views were spectacular. The hotel itself is quintessentially English, which some may feel to be a little intimidating, but this simply adds to its charm. Dinner was excellent, with a good local choice on the menu, all perfectly cooked and presented. The service was impeccable, to a level I have rarely seen in recent times. Breakfast was similarly impressive. I recommend this hotel for a short break away in the Lakes for anyone who appreciates good food and impeccable service, but do try to book a special offer.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are worth the additional charge. Ask for room 303.

We recently stayed here to celebrate my partners fortieth birthday. From the website photos we expected the hotel decor to be a little tired, which it was but i booked the hotel for its location rather than its looks. Our room however was worse than we expected. Small cramped and extremely hot! The sauna was out of service during our stay but due to the hotel not having air conditioning and the bathroom extractor fan not working we had our own private sauna !
I had ordered champagne, flowers and chocolates in advance. Due to the temperature of the room the ice in the wine bucket and the chocolates had melted. Luckily my partner is a " it's the thought that counts person". Our evening meal was excellent but customer service between staff varies greatly. The waitress was lovely and informative. We ordered wine with the meal , i wasn't shown the bottle before opening or asked to taste it. Thus didn't realise it was the wrong wine until i came to drink it. we informed the waiter who was not happy and told us "don't worry we charge by the glass also" . He did however change the bottle. We decided to eat out the next evening.
The hotel is in a fantastic location with beautiful grounds so if hit and miss service doesn't bother you I would highly recommend it( well maybe in the winter months when the room temperatures would be appreciated).

We booked 2 nights via secret escapes so got a great deal, with one dinner and breakfast included.

The rooms are modern but not contemporary. We booked a fall view room but they upgraded us to a lake view room which was a nice touch of hospitality since we were celebrating our anniversary and my birthday! We changed the room twice as the first one had pet smell and the second one had works going on in the opposite room. But they were very accommodating and did not fuss at all when we changed rooms.

The restaurant interior is dated but the food is pretty good! Very limited options for vegetarian and that too so-so, but the non-veg menu changed everyday and my husband loved the food. Pretty good for £32 pp. I am a vegetarian so wouldn't pay that much for what they had to offer. Breakfast was good with usual buffet stuff plus hot breakfast from a small menu. Our 2yr old daughter is a fussy eater and doesn't each much in restaurants so we did not order any meal for her, and they were very accommodating and did not fuss about it.

The hotel grounds are lovely and the lodore falls come down to form a stream inside the grounds. Wonderful experience when in the hot tub which is right next to the stream. Remember to book the hot tub in advance as it gets booked up. The swimming pool is indoors and is heated so good for the lakes weather. they also have an outdoor pool open weather permitting and is much colder than the indoor pool.

It is a good base to explore the area, will definitely recommend it. If you are fussy about pets in the rooms and/or allergic to pets maybe this isn't the place for you. We don't have pets and probably wouldn't have booked this hotel if it wasn't the offer, although we have no regrets and will definitely go back.

If you are a walker this is in a good location, if not book somewhere else. We paid £418 on a special offer through Achica for two nights including dinner on one night which is fine but I would not pay full rack rate ever for this hotel. Our room was very small with just enough room either side of the bed for a bedside table and the room was a bit tatty. There was mould around the bath in the bathroom and the end of bed mini sofa had threads hanging off the cushions. The food in the hotel was very good however the scrambled eggs at breakfast had been left under a heat lamp and so were crusty. The manageress in the restaurant is extremely grumpy and was very annoyed that we wanted to sit near the window saying that all the tables were reserved. We had paid for a lake view room so it seems odd that we wouldn't be told that you have to also reserve a lake view table. It's a shame she was so grumpy as the rest of the staff were very nice especially the girls. Sometimes however service can be a bit too intrusive and I don't like constantly being interrupted to ask if I want my glass filling. The reason we booked here was the spa and it is disappointing if that's the only reason you've come. The pool is quite small and not big enough to swim in. The sauna was out of order and we were told that we would have to book the hot tub well in advance as its "private" which conjured up all sorts of images. The beauty salon was more or less fully booked up. There are much better spa hotels around with bigger pools so we won't stay here again. And no offence to the older crowd, but at 40 we felt very young here and it's quite a dated hotel decor wise so maybe aimed at that market which then surprises me that Achica would feature it. I will however say that the bed was very comfy and the bedding lovely and crisp.

We booked this hotel through Travel Zoo, having read some very encouraging reviews. It was all that we had hoped for and more. The staff were marvellous, so welcoming and efficient. Our room was lovely, big bed, generous hospitality tray, plenty of hanging space and spotless en suite with enough toiletries to keep you going for ages. The hotel overlooking Derwent Water was simply stunning - looked a bit like an enormous Swiss Chalet and the grounds and facilities were excellent. But above all it was the food that delighted us the most. We have never, ever tasted such wonderful food in a hotel in all the years that we've been travelling. Lovely 4 course table d'hote menu included in the price with high quality ingredients and amazing skill from the chef. And the breakfasts were wonderful, too. A lovely selection of both English and Continental fayre, fresh fruit, pastries etc. Delightful and, again, lovely service from all the waiting staff who were excellent. The diet starts straight tomorrow!

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a fell-side room which was very pleasant although I'm sure the standard room...

Me and my partner went for 2 nights for my 21st birthday, it is an amazing hotel, with lots to offer, the food was very good, everything seemed to run extremely smoothly, all staff were polite, even one that didn't know much English! Although when we checked out and they asked how our stay was, the only thing we said was the cheeseboard was very dis satisfying as it was soo small he didn't seem to like the negative comment,
Would defiantly recommend and return thankyou
Also a thankyou for my birthday card and chocolates

Stayed at the hotel for Sunday and Monday night. What a lovely hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. As part of a Travelzoo offer we were offered scones and tea on arrival and cocktails and canapes before our meal. We were upgraded to a Fell View room which was clean, comfy and spacious. The food was first class. Didn't have time to use the leisure facilties but we checked them out and they looked very inviting. A lovely hotel in a great location we would highly recommend to anyone. If only the manager had been able to control the weather (it rained continually!) our stay would have been perfect!
Can't wait to go again
