The Borrowdale Hotel is a very friendly small hotel right in the heart of The North Lakes. It is not showy or posh but everything is so comfortable and well done. The food- if you like honest to goodness British cooking- is excellent!! There is a good choice and every night there is a different roast as well as fish ,casseroles, vegetarian etc etc. They are also very flexible in satisfying any special requests.
The hotel is very well situated for fell walking -both short or long , gentle or tough. It is also not too far from Keswick itself where there are many shops great for browsing.
I would say that this hotel caters for the slightly more mature guest who appreciates the better things in life. We have been lots of times and have every intention of being back.
If you like a gym spa or swimming pool you have the opportunity of using these facilities at The Lodore Falls (sister hotel walking distance along the road)- so the best of all worlds.
I can't finish this review without praising the staff enough- all very helpful and friendly.

We stayed 3 nights at the Borrowdale Hotel as a treat for our wedding anniversary and totally enjoyed the whole tme there. the facilities are first class as the place looks to have been refurbished to a very high standard, but in a retro kind of way: the furniture is new, but looks old fashioned and is very comfortable. the bed was extremely comfy, hard to get out of, even for the excellent full english, or maybe something else rom the varied menue.
I booked a prestige room, with the champagne, flowers and chocolates on arrival for the missus. We had a great view over the lake and surrounding mountains. We didn`t use the car for 2 days and didn`t need to, local walks are nearby and there is an excellent bus service regularly past the hotel.

We booked from a recommendation at work and were not disappointed.

Room Tip: call the hotel direct, very friendly and helpful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We had a lovely view of the lake from our window. Everything was spotlessly clean. The room wasn't large, but plenty big enough, didn't feel cramped and plenty of places to store our clothes. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant and in the bar - all was good. Generous portions in the restaurant and very tasty food. There were several lounges to sit in and relax. Comfortable smoking area. Very quiet, if you want a more lively "night life", Keswick is only a short drive up the road. A good base for exploring the northern lakes, either in the car or on foot. A drying room is available for wet walking clothes. All rooms are quiet - there is very little else around except sheep and a few cows!
Ladies would be advised to bring a small mirror, as there isn't one that you can sit at to do your make up, there is a good one in the bathroom.

We have just got back from a night at the Borrowdale Hotel and had a lovely stay. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Location was fantastic and weather better than expected . The let down was the accommodation. We booked a prestige room but unfortunately it wasnt. A good size with four poster bed and views out to the lake and fells but was so dated and drab looking. Wallpaper only just hanging on the wall and painwork badly in need of redoing. The bathroom was very very poor. I felt that the room was very overpriced (156.00 B&B) and was disappointed.

Everything was perfect - great staff, beautifully decorated room & bathroom. Food was excellent, if a little dated in style.
Our only slight niggle - our room was directly above the kitchen, and although the main extractor fans were turned off at 9:30, there was still a constant hum that we believe to be the cooling system for the fridges.
Charlie the barman/night porter kindly arranged a change of room for the one night, believing it to be the fans being cleaned overnight. The following morning reception were very apologetic and assured us there would be no noise for our last night, so we returned to our original room. Unfortunately the noise was still there that evening. Charlie once again offered to move us and showed us a couple of other rooms, but we decided to stay put as the other rooms had not yet been refurbished, and we liked our room much better.

Our thanks again to Charlie for trying to make our stay perfect.

My partner and I booked one of the offers on Travelzoo for a Friday and Saturday night stay at the hotel. When we called to arrange the booking we were delighted that we could bring our dog for an extra £5 per night. We arrived on Friday 4th March at around 5.30pm and were greeted by a very pleasant member of staff on reception. We got checked in and received details with regards to our room (37) on the second floor.

While walking to our room we did notice serious signs of wear on the carpet and the carpet itself was taped outside our door. We overlooked this and the room was pleasant and clean. We went into Keswick for a walk earlier this afternoon. On our return to the hotel at around 2.30pm we realised that our room had not been serviced and so we went to the bar to purchase coffees. We went back to the room after 3pm and it appeared as though the housekeeping staff were servicing the room. We decided to wait in the hallway until the room woud be finished. The maid appeared and asked us if we were waiting for room 37 and we confirmed that we were.

The maid (Linda) then immediately started saying that the room was a disgrace and that the bedding drape was not a blanket for the dog. I explained to her that I had folded it on the floor and nothing more. She was agressive and spoke to both myself and my partner as though we were nothing more than rubbish from the street. I was disgusted by her attitude and the way she spoke to us and went to the main reception to lodge a complaint. I spoke to the general manager and explained what had happened and asked for an apology. He told me he could not guarantee this and we did not receive an apology from the housekeeper or him on behalf of the hotel.

We were so upset by this that we decided we could not stay in the hotel and in addition to this the housekeeper did not clean the room. I asked the general manager for a partial refund which he refused and said I would need to write a letter.

Thank you for your comments.
My Housekeeping staff are very proud of the rooms at the Borrowdale Hotel and it is understandable that they become upset that a room is allowed to be spoilt by dogs tearing things up or general lack of respect of a room. Although there is no excuse to be rude to anyone at all for which I apologise.
In response to your observation about the carpets as I write this our new carpets are being fitted in the corridors upstairs.
