Stayed for one night dinner bed and breakfast. Not a great experience overall and I can't see myself going back. We ordered a sunday paper which didn't arrive, the staff didn't seem to care. There was no soap, shower gel or shower cap in the room and when I rang reception the staff were not very friendly and gave the impression it was my fault! No vegetarian sausages at breakfast, an interminable wait for a cooked breakfast, the chap at the next table asked whether he had been 'forgotten'. Dinner was mediocre, the lamb overcooked, the cheese board disappointing...overall I wouldn't recommend staying. The Hotel used to be fabulous, but is now part of a chain and it appears to have gone downhill....

Dear Carl,

Many thanks for taking the time to review the Borrowdale Hotel following your recent stay. We take everyone's comments on board and look to make any changes where we think our guests will benefit.

I feel you have been rather critical of our staff, who are very friendly, professional and well trained and to say that they don't care is insulting. To clarify, newspapers are not delivered to bedrooms but can be collected from reception, and this is made clear at reception when your newspaper order is taken at check-in.

Certainly to not have soap and shower gel is a mistake with housekeeping and I can ensure you that they have been asked to keep this in check. We don't provide shower caps in the room, but can be provided if you ask at reception.

Vegetarian Sausages are available upon request, as is a full Vegetarian breakfast. I'm not sure how long you waited for breakfast so could not comment about that.

Our new Head Chef has taken on board any comments about the food and will aim to improve all aspects where needed. The cheese trolley has a great variety of local cheeses which normally get some lovely comments.

Finally, I would like to clarify that whilst the Borroowdale Hotel is part of a local family-owned and run chain and we own 7 lovely hotels within a 30 mile radius. We have invested a significant amount of money into the hotel which had not had any refurbishments in over 20 years to bring it to a high standard which we know our guests appreciate. If you would like to stay in a tired looking hotel then perhaps the Borrowdale is not for you.

We wish you all the best in your future travels in the Lake District.

Kind Regards,

Dani

I have just returned from a delightful stay at the Borrowdale Hotel, over the bank holiday, the Hotel has the old Lake district charm having lost none of its original architecture, located nicely just down the road from Keswick, which is a 10 minute drive, the hotel has a pleasing interior, but more importantly, an amazingly attentive team of staff, everyone is friendly, and pleasant, the Management team are also not afraid to roll up their sleeves and pitch in, they are especially friendly and attentive to your every need in the Bar Lounge, highly noticeable in the evenings.

The Staff are the Borrowdale Hotel, they are what makes the hotel a pleasing place to spend your short break, or longer, the hotel has a fine restaurant, excellent breakfast in the morning, and serves meals all day. The Bar has that old english public house feel very pleasing in the evenings and of course the conservatory is also a nice place to relax and have afternoon tea, which the hotel is famous for.

The rooms are comfortable, well appointed, the bathrooms are modern, and all facilities are up to contemporary standard.

All in All really, I could only say to the Management Team, thank you for making my stay enjoyable and pleasant, there isn't much else you could do to make me more happy in my choice, I think the General Manager can be extremely proud of all of the staff who work in the Hotel, their attentiveness to guests is plain to see for all, well done and look forward to seeing you all again in the future, I am definitely coming back.

Best wishes Pete Bennett.

Enjoyed 2 nights at this hotel on Monday and Tuesday. Very friendly helpful staff and good food. Room was a bit small but had a super large bed and very clean. Room was overlooking car park at back so not brilliant view although could see sheep grazing in distance. Beautiful gardens where you could have tea and scones. Excellent base for visiting the local area.

olde world victorian charm! Dress for dinner - never mind if the others don't! Very attentive Romanian and local staff, dinners are terrific right through to the cheese trolley. Admire the old maps and pictures on the walls. Adjourn to the drawing room for coffee and games. Walk in the garden, rest after a hike, take full advantage of breakfast, have tea in the garden, and think yourself back in 1880. Yes, you could rent a boring cottage, but this is vacation!

Room Tip: Spend the money - it will be well worth it!

We wanted to book the Lodore Falls as thats where we have gone most of the time. Wasn't impressed with the managers attitude there but fortunately they had a very helpful girl on the desk who suggested the a Borrowdale and even rang them for us. Boy are we glad she did! My 9 year old was ecstatic that she had her own room with tv. We had a massive bed and they even set up a seperate table in the beautiful conservatory so we could have breakfast because we didnt want to leave our dog in the room. We have already booked for July. Hello Borrowdale, goodbye Lodore Falls.

Room Tip: Our higher room had beautiful views.

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful two night break at the Borrowdale. After reading some of the reviews we weren't sure what to expect but we needn't have worried. We enjoyed every moment from playing board games in the lounge to the pimms and crumpets on arrival and the cooked breakfasts really set you up for the day. Our evening meals didn't disappoint either. We were also lucky enough to attend the wine tasting which I would recommend to anyone. The staff were all pleasant and welcoming and the room and bathroom were spotless. We were also fortunate to meet a lovely couple who have been visiting the Borrowdale for the past 40 years, testament to the quality of the hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay, Nicola and Toby Hassall.

Stayed 3 nights on an excellent value dinner, B & B offer. Our prestige room (31) on the top floor had windows on two sides, fell and lake views, a huge bed, plenty of space and was extremely comfortable. The whole hotel has just been refurbished and has a fresh, up-to-date feel without the sacrifice of traditional virtues, including relaxing lounges and a bar with good local beers. All the staff were friendly, engaging and helpful. In common with other recent reviewers, we had been a little wary about the expected standard of food, given some recent negative comments, but apart from a couple of small glitches our dinners and breakfasts were well-cooked, presented and served. The wine list may lack less expensive options but the bottles we chose were excellent examples of their type. There are walks literally from the door (the walks booklet the hotel sells is good here) and Keswick is only 10 minutes drive away.
