The hotel is in a great location, very quiet, food is good and staff friendly.

The hotel is pet friendly which again is good except that our bed had dog hairs on the throw when we arrived and the internet in the room didn't work.

Overall a good quiet location for a break, will go again.

My husband and i stayed for one night on the 1st july and we had a lovely time.
Our room was very nice it was clean and quiet and the food was very good.
The only problem they seem to have here is breakfast it always takes so long to get served they really need to get it sorted as all the guests that we spoke to said the same thing!

We had always enjoyed our stays in The Borrowdale until we had a disappointing experience a few years ago. Happily, our friends persuaded us to try again and we had a brilliant time. The room which had been refurbished, was comfortable - and big enough for our friends to join us to watch England's first match in the World Cup! (The only disappointment of the whole weekend!) The food, both breakfast and dinner, was excellent and it was lovely to see Cath still serving. The staff as a whole were charming and helpful. We had an excellent recommendation for a Romanian wine. The new manager took the time to have a chat with us and I am sure he will take the hotel forward.

What more could you want? Our "standard" room was not spacious but was nicely furnished including a large comfortable bed. The entire place has been recently refurbished, so combines a lovely traditional building with modern amenities. All staff were professional, efficient and friendly. Food at both dinner and breakfast was excellent. We recommend it and will be returning.

Room Tip: The road at the front of the hotel has little traffic. Rooms at the rear have no noise except owls...

We stayed for a one night break. Everything was good and we couldn't fault anything. The Hotel is relatively small and as such you are made to feel special. Having said everything was good one thing was exceptional the dining room was run to perfection by the head waiter Cath. She had an eagle eye for detail coupled to a very helpful manner. The waiting staff were happy and their friendly way was really great. everything arrived on time. And yes the food was also excellent.

We booked a 2 night stay through a Travelzoo offer and stayed her in June 2014. The offer included a 3 course meal with a different wine for each course. We paid extra to upgrade the room, although I could not say for sure it was a deluxe room as the room was quite small. We were in room 7 which was nicely furnished and comfortable, and clean, also reasonably quiet. The room was on the side and looked out onto a flat roof and nearby building, but you also got nice views of Derwentwater. The room was well equipped, tea, coffee, etc, but no bottled water or mini bar. The restaurant is spacious, well decorated and the staff are very attentive. The meal was also very good and I enjoyed the wine more than my husband! They stop serving at 9:30pm and complimentary coffee and petit fours are available in the conservatory after. You just help yourself. Breakfast was also served in the restaurant, and the staff try to seat guests at the same table each day. Breakfast was lovely, freshly cooked and with a good choice. There is also a buffett with cereals, juices, etc. When we were they we were also treated to a complimentary cream tea which was served on the terrace and was lovely.

There was free wi-fi which had a pretty good range. The staff on the front desk were very helpful too and we bought a book of local walks from them. The restaurant changed the menu daily and had a reasonable selection of vegetarian dishes. We ate in a restaurant in Keswick on our second night.

The hotel is located at the southern end of Derwentwater, the road is not particularly busy and the view of the lake and hills is stunning. It is convieniently situated for most of the south lakes and Keswick, we walked the 9 miles circuit around Derwentwater stopping for lunch in Keswick which was great. You can also use the facilities at the sister hotel Lodore Falls, which would have been good to know beforehand........

I know this hotel allows dogs in some rooms, and there were some dogs around, but thankfully all were well behaved and didn't cause us any problems. A very nice hotel, we may well stay here again, just wished the rooms were a bit bigger.

Room Tip: A room with a view!

Me, my wife and our friends stayed one night here and had a lovely time. We checked in and the receptionist was very helpful (although we were not offered a welcome glass of sherry, I saw the decanter and if I'd asked I'm sure we would have been given a glass) Our room was on the ground floor number 47, it was pretty new and the decoration couldn't be faulted, it had a wet room and the suite was a good upmarket one. I don't usually use the t.v. in hotel rooms, but I did watch the news and the picture was very good. The bed was very comfortable and we both said that we had had a really good night sleep!
We unpacked and then went for a cream tea served outside in the sunshine. The scones were delicious and there was plenty of fresh butter, cream and jam. We went for a walk along the river Derwent, over the bridge and along the boardwalk and bridleway to the quaint village of Grange then back to the hotel. Dinner was exceptional we had a three course with a glass of wine with each. The food was really delicious the service very professional. After dinner there was complimentary coffee/tea and petit fours. Breakfast was very good plenty of choice on the menu.
We really enjoyed our brief stay here and would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends and family.

Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this completely refurbished 4 Star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and Lakeland cream teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms have all been refurbished within the last 3 years all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray. There are also 2 extra large, easy-access rooms too. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents.
