Really disappointing - the sponge cake was soggy, the shortbread far too thin and dry, the fruit cake was dry too. The tea tasted like coffee - the pot had obviously been used for coffee as well as tea. This is Britain, if you cant get a cream tea right the rest of the food must be truly awful.

We had a pleasant one night stay for a family birthday treat. The public areas are all very stylish but in keeping with the original building, we had a relaxed lunch in the conservatory, we drank good local Jennings beer and shared platters of the hotel's own smoked salmon and meats with salad. After a trip on the Keswick launch around the lake we returned to the hotel and the weather allowed us to sit in the pretty garden to have a glass of Pimms and strawberries, which were included in our deal from secret escapes.
Our rooms were all well furnished with comfy bed and good quality linens. We had lovely view of derwentwater.
The bar was very cosy for our pre dinner drinks, we did feel the restaurant was a bit too brightly lit but we had a nice round table. We all enjoyed our meal, the portions were not huge and the service despite being very attentive was rather brisk. We did like the help yourself coffee with delicious fudge whilst we sat in the bar area.
Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold food.
We did enjoy our stay but not sure if we would return, the package we had was good value but the normal rates are rather expensive.
All the staff were very helpful and pleasant.

We returned yesterday from a 2 night stay. We wanted to stay an extra night but they were fully booked :( The hotel, food and staff were superb, 1st class even. The only issue was being woken up at 7.45am for the room to be cleaned! We took our dog with us and even she was spoilt by everyone there. Would definitely recommend 100%. Take advantage of the daily bus at a cost of £8.00, you can get off and on wherever you want too, great value and the bus stop is outside the door. We met the new manager, Ivor or Ivan (sorry can't remember exact name), he couldn't do enough for everyone, a very hands on manager, very approachable and effective.
Great location for everything.

All in all we had a very enjoyable short stay at this hotel with only a couple of niggles.

Good Points:-
1. Excellent location down a quiet road on Derwentwater.
2. Comfortable bed and very nice room.
3. Evening meals of a high quality.
4. Tasty breakfast cooked freshly to order.
5. Very friendly barman.

Potential Improvements:-
1. The wet room shower was great to use but so much water went all over the bathroom floor that it stayed wet all day. Needed to use one of the towels to mop up.
2. The wine waiter needs some training. He didn't appear to know what was out of stock and he managed to sneeze violently after opening the bottle. If he hadn't managed to cover the top of the bottle with his sleeve that bottle would have been rejected. He also didn't turn away from us to sneeze. Maybe I should have asked for a new bottle anyway.

We spent two days here in early August and already look forward to another stay as soon as is possible. Although the room was a little small, this was not a problem for such a short stay. The room was very clean, the bed extremely comfortable, the food was sublime and the staff very friendly and accommodating.

All in all, we rate our stay as outstanding, one of the best hotel stays that we can remember!

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are the best as you would expect in the lakes and it appears booking direct with the...

Took a two night break here and was very well looked after by the friendly hotel staff. Our room was clean and comfortable. The bed was as comfortable as our own. The view from our corner room was stunning looking out, as it does, towards Derwent Water.

The hotel is one of a group of seven Lakeland Hotels and being keen walkers we were delighted to find that they have published a very useful walking guide that we made good use of.

The food was of a very high standard. The output from their own smokery is particularly worth trying - I had a delicious bar meal of smoked Cumberland sausage and mash.

Room Tip: 1st or 2nd floor corner room looking out towards Lake Derwent would be my choice.

We booked our 2 night bed and breakfast break in July back in April. We later received emails offering dinner bed and breakfast for £80 per night cheaper than we had paid. When we pointed this out to the not so helpful receptionist she stated it was like booking a flight! We pointed out that being a regular guest we should have been given the better offer. The room was small, hot and cramped with a view of the car park. There was no bath, merely a wet room. When we asked for a room with a bath we were told that there were none available, presumably because of the people taking advantage of the dbb offer which we had been denied!

Room Tip: Dont book early!
