“Very busy with middle aged groups”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

We were walking the Cumbria Way and must have been pretty much the only ones to arrive on foot that night. We stayed on a Friday night and the car park was full as there seemed to be a lot of single sex groups who each arrived in their own cars separately. They all ate in for dinner and breakfast so it must have been good and the beer was cheap. The pub in the village was not so good so we wished we'd also stayed to eat at the hostel. I was in a 6 bed female dorm which only had storage and hooks for 4. My partner stayed in a similar male dorm. There were no 2 bed rooms available. The hostel was well staffed but perhaps some training in customer service would help, a smile and a response to a customer remark costs nothing and doesn't take any extra time but leaves a good impression. This seems to be a common feature with the YHA these days. The facilities were good and clean.

The funniest thing was in the members kitchen for breakfast we were fully dressed at 7am and getting our breakfast when 6 ladies turned up in dressing gowns to get their cups of coffee and were astounded that we were up and about and ready to go.

Gone are the days when the YHA provided cheap accommodation for walkers passing through.

Thanks for taking the time to write a fantastic review of your stay. We are really pleased that you found the facilities to be clean and the beer to be good value and thought the breakfast and evening meal were a tempting option.

It is disappointing to hear that you felt you didn’t get the full YHA welcome during your recent stay. At the time of your visit most of our staff were brand new having only been working at the hostel for a couple of weeks. Whilst its no excuse, when you are really busy & you have a complicated new job to learn it is easy to get absorbed in work. You’ll have to come back again soon so we can give you a proper YHA Borrowdale welcome to remember us by :-)

Kind regards
Chris

Stayed here for one night and was impressed as I have been with most YHA hostels. Room was clean and comfortable, shower rooms clean and hot, the kitchen sufficient for making a warm meal and plenty of parking. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the drive there was lovely, what you visit the area for. The only issue I would have is the guest were mostly of a senior age so the lounge area was like a library with no atmosphere. A great base for exploring the area.

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at YHA Borrowdale. We are really pleased you enjoyed your time in the Lakes and thet you found the rooms to be clean and comfortable.

We are sorry to hear you found the bar area to be a bit quiet during your visit. The atmosphere in our lounge bar is usually absolutely buzzing and gets a lot of good feedback however one of the joys of staying in the lakes is the ability to get away from it all, enjoy some peace and quiet and catch up on some reading. From time to time this can mean our lounge bar is pretty tranquil.

Next time you should stay on one of our live music nights, keep an eye on our facebook page for dates :)

All the best
Chris

I visited this YHA venue as part of a group of nine at the end of March. It is a really picturesque and nice place.

The dormitories and toilets were very clean. The dormitories are a bit cramped with two bunk beds and four people in them though. The showers were decent. We all paid for the three course dinner and it was good value. We also paid for a cooked breakfast, and used the clean kitchen to prepare our lunches. The dining hall is a sociable area at breakfast and dinner time.

In the evening we had a few Jennings ales in the hostel common room, next to the log fire, and a few down the road at the Scafell hotel.

Considering this is only a hostel, this a great comfortable place to stay and the staff are friendly.

Three of us stayed for two nights last week; warm atmosphere & friendly staff.
We ate in one evening, lovely food at a sensible price. Really couldn't be faulted (Cumbria sausage/chorizo sausage casserole with rice & salad + beef & ale pie, apple crumbles to finish with)
Will definitely stay again-great location.

Thanks for taking the time to write a fantastic review of your stay at YHA Borrowdale. I'm really pleased to hear that you found the staff to be friendly & the food tasty. The Cumberland sausage & chorizo goulash is my personal favourite of the dishes we serve and in my opinion the perfect meal for after a long day on the fells :)

We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Whilst we were staying there appeared to be several people staying who were taking time to rest and recover from life events, this is a lovely hostel in a lovely location to do this. Excellent for walking straight out of the front door. very well kept, really clean, well decorated and welcoming environment in a wonderful setting. After a long days walking on the fells put your wet clothes in the large drying room get a pint of real ale from the bar and relax in the comfortable lounge area in front of open fire. We fed ourselves using the self catering kitchen, although smallish was again very clean and tidy lots of pots and pans and good places to store your food, could do with a few more utensils (wooden spoons etc) but that's just being picky. No recycling bins in kitchen which is very unusual in yha. Only thing which let the stay down for us the staff were not particular friendly no good morning or have you had a good day which is a real shame as even when staying at some of the older yha in need of a bit of TLC the staff have always made you feel really welcome.

Many thanks for taking the time to write such a fabulous review of your stay. We are really pleased you enjoyed your visit to YHA Borrowdale and found the facilities to be of a good standard.

Unfortunately we are unable to get a recycled waste collection due to our remote location however we do recycle as much as possible including all our glass and plastic waste by taking it in the car to the recycling bins in Rossthwaite. Our hostel recycling bins are currently kept in the drying room although we are working on building a new recycling area out the back of the self-catering kitchen.

It is disappointing to hear that you felt the staff didn’t give the full YHA welcome during your recent stay. At YHA Borrowdale we aim to make all our guests feel welcome during their stay and we are a very friendly bunch, honest! :-) At this time of year most of our staff brand new and have only been working at the hostel for a couple of weeks. Everyone is working really hard to get up to speed for the coming season and whilst it’s no excuse, when you are really busy & you have a complicated new job to learn it is easy to get absorbed in work. You’ll have to come back in a couple of weeks when we are all up to speed so we can give you a proper YHA Borrowdale welcome to remember us by :-)

A gem of a hostel location wise, sitting on a riverside location in Borrowdale. Lovely outside area if you get the weather to enjoy it, comfortable interior if the weather isn't so good. As a group of three, we where in fact given a six bed room, so plenty of space to spread out.

One bonus with this hostel, is that self caterers use the same dining room as those eating from the menu. So as a group we could do both and even continue chatting to people we had met in the common room etc. Common room has a real fire and was decorated for Christmas at our time of visit.

As always, its the staff that contribute so much to the success of the group, so well done as usual guys....
