We were walking the Cumbria Way and must have been pretty much the only ones to arrive on foot that night. We stayed on a Friday night and the car park was full as there seemed to be a lot of single sex groups who each arrived in their own cars separately. They all ate in for dinner and breakfast so it must have been good and the beer was cheap. The pub in the village was not so good so we wished we'd also stayed to eat at the hostel. I was in a 6 bed female dorm which only had storage and hooks for 4. My partner stayed in a similar male dorm. There were no 2 bed rooms available. The hostel was well staffed but perhaps some training in customer service would help, a smile and a response to a customer remark costs nothing and doesn't take any extra time but leaves a good impression. This seems to be a common feature with the YHA these days. The facilities were good and clean.
The funniest thing was in the members kitchen for breakfast we were fully dressed at 7am and getting our breakfast when 6 ladies turned up in dressing gowns to get their cups of coffee and were astounded that we were up and about and ready to go.
Gone are the days when the YHA provided cheap accommodation for walkers passing through.
