“An idyllic place to escape from the rat-race of modern life!”
Reviewed 28 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Delightful is the only word I can use to describe Longthwaite Farmhouse and our all-too-short stay in this wonderful backwater. Want to go back very soon, but that may not be possible. The place is exactly as described in the literature and has few mod-cons (no TV,, no dishwasher, no WIFI, etc.) and not even a usable mobile phone signal - but who cares? It's a very comfortable place to stay, adequately equipped and very peaceful - even the sheep in the nearby farm barn seem unusually quiet (they were being sheared during out stay). The nearby river is very attractive, through we resisted the temptation to bathe. You can get meals and other refreshments in the YHA - a couple of hundred yards away - and that has a free WIFI connection (when it's working).

“Even better than what we'd hoped for after seeing the pictures”
Reviewed 17 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We reserved this house back in October after seeing photos and reviews online, and were looking forward to it all year as the highlight of our summer stay in England, most of which was going to be spent in Oxford for work. As two professors with our children (girls aged 10 and 13) and another family member (the girls' aunt), we loved the whole feel of the place, from the range of books to read, to the art on the walls, to the views out the windows and the sound of the river just outside, as well as the wonderful wood-burning stove in the living room. The house isn't for people who want every modern amenity: there is no dishwasher, no drier, and no internet, which is itself actually a wonderful gift, especially because it was easy enough to check email in any of the local pubs around. The house is located in probably the most beautiful area of the Lake District, and even on rainy days we enjoyed beautiful walks into the fells or along the rivers, just by going out the door, and never having to get into the car. We loved the pubs in walking distance and the little shop in Rosthwaite where we bought the most incredible Herdwick lamb and cooked it back at the house (plenty of good cooking utensils). It was colder than we expected, probably because we were there in June (coming from Texas where it was already hot), and wished we'd brought warmer clothes. Later in the summer it must be great to swim in the river. Being close to the Youth Hostel meant that we could go there for tips on local hikes, weather information, and even get a beer or ice cream or a pint of milk when we wanted to. Full on grocery shopping required a 20 minute drive into Keswick, so that meant a certain amount of planning, but that didn't present much of a problem. We loved the sheep everywhere and also the cultural things around...mainly we wish we had stayed longer than a week because it was so relaxing and there was so much to do. We would definitely return.

“Very basic but lovely, "no mod cons"”
Reviewed 9 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

A beautiful property in a fabulous bit of Borrowdale.
Cold and damp when we arrived, even some of the mattresses, but after 2 days constantly heating it, it was lovely. First day we were pretty much confined to the sitting room as everywhere else was icy.
I can't fault the setting, however. Beautiful walks from the door.

“An authentic Lake District Experience”
Reviewed 19 January 2016 for a stay in October 2015

This wonderful ancient building provides a cosy, but reasonably spacious base for exploring the central part of Lakeland. If you are looking for slick, shiny, modern then this is not for you. But our stay was idyllic, fortunately the initial forecast for rain proved mostly inaccurate, although the Derwent rose alarmingly after a days' rain (the owner has since advised they were not inundated in the latest flood emergency however). The local pub was a reasonable walk, although going over the fields requires walking boots (otherwise it's a short car ride). The restaurants of Keswick a bit further, but easily driveable.
The wood burner was easy to get going, and stayed in all week, and on tick-over re-loading from the copious log supply, was sufficient to keep everywhere warm during a relatively mild October week. The lack of TV and mobile signal was clearly advised before our trip, and whilst difficult for those of us with work to continue, was a refreshing, if chastening experience. A couple of our party tried out the WiFi at the YHA next door, but found it a bit iffy, and even the FM radio we took with us struggled to find Radio 4, although Classic FM was fine!
As owner of a similarly old property, I was fascinated just exploring, and attempting to trace the chronology and detail of improvements .
Reading the visitor comments going back to the '60s was also fascinating. As a base for exploring this stunning area, I don't think it can be bettered, and our now constrained (through age) walking ability still mean there is plenty of potential, directly from the house. Only sorry I can't always rustle up enough people to go here more often.

“Perfect family setting and tech detox”
Reviewed 11 November 2015 for a stay in August 2015

I stayed at longthwaite with 3 generations of family and my girlfriend ( 6 adults and 2 children ) it was the perfect weekend getaway for an extremely good cost. Longthwaite farm is set in beautiful Borrowdale by Derwent water which for me is one of top spots in the lakes. Down the road is Ashness bridge and Surprise view which is quite possibly one of the most amazing views in the lakes if not the country. The Farmhouse is natural and as you would imagine it to be hundreds of years ago. If you are after modern amenties and strong phone signal you are not going to get it here but if you want a cosey traditional cottage to spend quality time with the family and have a bit of a tech detox this is the perfect place!
Keswick is not far away and is a great little town which has everything you would need to keep you busy. I highly reccomend this qaint yet spacious holiday cottage and it's beautiful setting. Perfect!

“Perfect cottage in a lovely setting!”
Reviewed 16 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We all loved it here at Longthwaite it was perfect for what we were looking for. The cottage is decked out in an authentic style throughout. It is clean and tidy with lots of utensils, books, games and firewood. Location was really picturesque. The cottage was really spacious for the 8 of us that were staying over. The owner at Longthwaite was great and explained perfectly what to expect out of our stay at the cottage. He also provided very thorough notes and instructions on how to operate everything at the cottage.
It's really lovely there and if you are looking for a traditional, old style country house with a rustic feel then Longthwaite is the place to go!
Thanks very much we had a great time :)

“If you like the authentic Lake District experience - this is for you”

It's difficult to say anything but positive praise for this holiday cottage. Built in 1691 according to the furniture inside, how can you criticize a building that has stood for over 300 years.

Deep inside a beautiful Lake District valley, close to a river, with mountain views pretty much out of all the windows it meets most requirements. Step outside and there are valley walks and mountain explorations everywhere.

Ok so there is no mobile signal and no tv, but despite the panicked look on the face of my teenagers they loved it. A week without the internet brought us closer together as a family,

There were some amusing comments in the guest book dating back to the 1960's so this place is no stranger to visitors and the instructions inside ensure you know where everything is. The owners have taken care of pretty much all possible requirements.

If you want to feel embedded in the Lake District this cottage is perfect. If however you like your modern luxuries; then best look elsewhere as you will have to occasionally get your hands dirty putting wood in the log fire.

Nature is very close by and we all enjoyed this place tremendously. I thoroughly recommend it if you want to get back in touch with planet earth...
