“Well worth a try”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

having read some of the reviews on here I must admit I was a little apprehensive. But on arrival we were very pleasantly surprised.
Yes the outside could do with a lick of paint but inside the hotel it was very clean and a very welcoming feeling prevailed.
The staff were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough to help.

Our garden facing room was very impressive

Food in the restaurant was very good as was the service.

Great base for exploring the Lakes

Room Tip: We were in 24 on entering the room you go upstairs lovely 4 poster bed and great views of the garden

Stayed 2 nights and will be going back!. A delightful handy location for the lakes and walking. Very nice staff who couldn't do enough to help. The breakfast was excellent and so was dinner. couldn't find fault with anything, least of all the price.

We stayed for 2 nights and had a overall good time. The service on our first night was slow due to being busy but the second night was fantastic. Bar staff friendly and professional and we both said we should have stayed for longer. We felt sorry for the receptionist on our first night and at breakfast as she was run off her feet and doing most jobs front of house. The outside needs a paint and the inside needs some maintainence but over all lovely country house hotel. Food and drink prices are excellent and value for money. Our room was a little noisy as it was on the road side but clean and tidy. This was a christmas present from my son and partner and we really enjoyed our stay and using the hotel as a base to explore the area. Lovely gardens and if you have time, go and see the Rum Story in Whitehaven, really interesting and the Rum is fantastic.

Room Tip: Dont get one on the road side as its noisy but you can open your window if the rooms warm.

We stayed one night at this hotel. We were a bit concerned with some of the reviews. We totally agree with some of the them. There's nothing to complain about but the lack of maintenance it is a big disappointment. Overall the service is good and the room was very good and clean. The decoration is a bit tired but this is an old house, so a modern decoration wouldn't fit here. What is a shame is the lack of maintenance. Most of the things would require minor DYI such as, painting the windows or fixing the shower tube, or varnishing doors, etc. It really looks like no one cares about the building. However, the gardens are lovely and well kept and clean! Breakfast was good. WiFi didn't work.

On the face of it this hotel looks a bit shabby, the exterior could do with a lick of paint and a tidy up. The interior is clean but a bit dated. Check in was quick but lacking a smile from the receptionist. The food was pleasant and restaurant staff were friendly. The rooms are spacious and do have the usual things you expect to find in a hotel room.

Ok outside needs a good re-paint but inside is very presentable. Greeted by Jeanette who was very pleasant and helpful and advised we had been upgraded which is always a good start. We had been given this two day stay as a Christmas present by two of our daughters which consisted of an evening meal on one of the nights and afternoon tea on the other. Room was spotless but the jacuzzi bath wouldn't work. However a quick trip to see Jeanette and all was fixed in 10 minutes. Apparently the trip switch was activated.. Our room overlooked fine lawn and gardens expertly kept. We decided to have the evening meal and were not disappointed with good food and very attentive staff. The breakfast was a little small but were advised by the manager to ask for more bacon which we did with no fuss. The second day we had our afternoon tea which came well presented and later dined in the restaurant again food excellent.
This is an excellent venue to explore the western side of the Lakes but nothing much else to attract at night so dining in with a good bottle of wine keenly priced is ideal. We had a good chat with the manager who was only too keen to make us welcome. Upon leaving both the manager and Jeanette wished us a safe journey. Would certainly come back especially on a two night deal.

Room Tip: Downstairs room advisable.

We had a lovely Room with wooden beams and mansion style decor, The Room was spacious, they had Dogs next to our room, but they were the very quiet, can't say much about the owners,
because the rooms are Joined through a door, I was kept away half the Night by someone snoring like a freight train rumbling through, I am a light sleep and wake up very easily. The Breakfast was good, but portions really small, Sausages were tiny, I thought there was a Sausage famine, other than that it's a great Hotel, we had some food in the evening and the food was lovely, would I stay again, Yes I would.
