Fox & Hounds Inn
Reviewed 12 July 2013

Stayed at the Fox and Hounds for one night while doing the coast to coast walk at the beginning of July.

The Room on arrival had a cracked sink and a toilet that had not been cleaned properly although as we just wanted to crash out we did not mention this on arrival. Also as a previous reviewer pointed the clock in the room did not work (although this was not particularly important). Besides this the room was OK.

The main problem was sleeping. The room was directly above the bar unfortunately this meant that you heard people talking right up to closing - about 1am. When this stopped you then heard the next door neighbour's snoring. Not a great experience.

We also went down for food - this was pretty average and did seem microwaved.

On the positive side the room was large and the pub did have a dedicated drying room useful after a days rain.

As there was a lack of accommodation in the village it seemed there was little choice but to stay there.

This is a community run pub, and to be fair its not bad, but it is run down and the rooms need a good seeing to. Good beer at the bar, but the food was distinctly average, enormous portions, but lacking quality. My cheese tart turned out to be a microwaved quiche.
If I were a local I would probably drink here, but if you are walking the coast to coast there are other alternatives which are probably worth trying.

First night of our Coast to Coast walk. Positives - Large double room - en suite with bath was much appreciated at the end of a hard day. Plenty of hot water. No one asked us to take boots off or minded us taking kit up to our room. The man in the bar was friendly enough despite us turning up a little later than planned. It is only a few metres off the main route so ideally placed.

Negatives - room was a bit scruffy... cracked sink in bathroom, light above mirror didn't work, clock on desk didn't work, no one mentioned to us that there was a drying room until we were leaving in the morning. Could hear noise (music and loud voices) coming from somewhere (we thought was possibly the bar) when we were trying to sleep. Breakfast wasn't of a great quality, the beans and bacon tasted cheap, soggy hash brown, and we weren't offered a choice of toast. Had to ask for refill of hot drinks as they weren't offered.

Looking back maybe we could have asked for some of these things to be corrected had they bothered us more (the light etc) but for such a short stay and feeling as exhausted as were did we just didn't think they were worth bothering with. Not great value for money but sadly choice is limited so close to the route in this area.

Arrived here from St Bees, we had a twin room with a bath/shower, the room was clean and comfortable.
We arrived here about 2.30 p.m. the room was ready and we received a warm welcome from the landlady.
We had our evening meal here, Fish and chips which was very good, washed down with some good ale. Good atmosphere in the pub and friendly staff.
Breakfast the next day was excellent with a good range on offer. I had the cooked breakfast which included the black pudding, setting us up for the days walking ahead.

Our second night on the Coast to Coast walk and we had a lovely large room (room 3) with an enormous bathroom which had a bath, which was very much appreciated after 15 miles of walking.
The bed was comfortable and the room very clean.
The meals were very nice, bar had a great atmosphere and the breakfast the following morning was very tasty.
The only down side is that we went to bed early and the bar was a bit noisy but not everyone is doing the C2C walk!

Helpful friendly hoasting staff, wonderful food, lovely location, only complaint, noisy rear door on closing, it slams when left to it's own devices! But wasn't helped by unsupervised children running a mock! But will be back soon as said children probably wont be there!!!

Excellent stay on our first day of walking C-2-C, rooms very large and comfortable, clean with a "BATH" which helped sooth away the pains and strains of a 15 mile walk.
Excellent choice for C-2-C`s.
A warm welcome from staff in a relaxing pub environment, enjoyed the home cooked food and a large selection of Beers / Wine to chose from.
Again a home cooked "excellent" breakfast to start the next day.
Very good stay and will return.
