Liz, the landlady, appears to be trying to run this place single-handedly: cooking, cleaning. booking, organising and catering for christenings and noisy Young Farmers' events - consequently, the experience of staying here is basic at best and verging on the bizarre at worst. While we had some sympathy for Liz's over-worked multi-tasking, we found her rather irritable when requests or complaints were made. I was startled at breakfast when my request for sugar to put on my cereal was met with an angry outburst in the kitchen that there was "plenty of sugar already on the table!" (the tiny catering packets for tea and coffee).
High Cross is desperately in need of renovation and extra staff. Our bedrooms had splendid views but the bathroom needed a good clean and was terribly cold. The carpets were worn and shabby and the tables in the bar were sticky. We ate there on our first night and it was not enjoyable - we waited for at least half an hour (even though there were no other diners at this point) and, when it arrived, my friend's cottage pie was an unappealing grey, soupy mess and my battered haddock was still sticky on the inside. Our impressions of the place were further damaged by a noisy event on our second night, which made it impossible to relax in the bar that evening as the air had turned blue and was full of drunken shouting. I cut short my three day break here and retired to the Black Cock in the village - which was a welcome relief and made me realise how tense the High Cross had been making us both feel. I don't think we'll be back.
