Engine Inn
Ranked #10 of 15 Cartmel B&B and Inns
Reviewed 2 June 2014 via mobile

My wife and I chose the Engine as our honeymoon destination as we saw a KGB deal, but we paid full price as the deal excluded the dates we needed. On arrival, I was a little surprised that the £180 was only for two nights stay and not three as I had originally thought - that was my own fault for not checking the booking details properly.

That said, the experience we had of the engine had us feeling that the £90 per night was a little over-priced. The room was nicely decorated, but a little difficult to manoeuvre around the bed as it only just fits between the walls. The bathroom was also quite tight - particularly the bath that seemed to have been wedged into the wall. Had a very claustrophobic feel to it.

On arrival, the owner did little to make us feel welcome - more interested in making sure we paid the balance before showing us to our room. And that was pretty much all we saw of the owners for the entire stay, no checks to see if we were enjoying our stay, nothing. Just get them in, and get them back out again - that's how it felt.

The breakfast was ok - they seem to have improved the tea situation and replaced the flasks (see other reviews) with teapots. Nothing spectacular though, but the service at breakfast was a lot more friendly than the remainder of the stay. We didn't eat lunch or dinner at the Engine as the menu looked rather pricey for pub food.

Overall, it's a nice little pub but the prices don't reflect the quality you get. I would only recommend if you need somewhere specific to stay in the area. We certainly won't be returning the 4 hours drive to get there again.

After a pleasant afternoon strolling around Grange over Sands, booked into the Engine, located alongside a fast flowing stream. An old pub that has obviously had glory days in the past. The room was accessed by a narrow and twisting staircase, the handrail loose. The room itself was clean and certainly suitable considering the price. En suite facilities with a bath and shower.
The dining experience was not bad, good pub food, very limited choice, but what was ordered was freshly cooked and hit the spot. Should have queried the cost of the wine before ordering a bottle, crazily expensive considering the location for a not very special plonk.
The owners are moving on, perhaps this is reflected in their attention to the business.

Room Tip: Not a lot of choice, not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues

Stayed 20-21 May on kgb deal, food is great, don't need to eat again until the evening after those breakfasts.

Staff very friendly, really great and relaxing stay.

Thought they had made a mistake with the bill as first nights dinner did not show, but had forgotten included in kgb deal so made it even better

Room Tip: Stayed in room 4 which believe not a normal kgb room

We recently stayed in lovely lavender cottage just 200 yards from this lovely pub. Food was very nice and pub was both dog friendly and gluten free aware. Even offering gluten free bread with their delicious Morecambe bay shrimps. Family run and ruled over by Jasper the collie this was a good find that greatly enhanced our holiday

We stayed here on a KGB deal and it was fantastic value for money. The pub is quaint and in a lovely little village. The room was nice and we had a key to use the side door to save coming through the pub. We ate in the bar on both evenings and the food was good standard and the breakfast was good too. We will stay here again as it is a great base for exploring the lovely countryside

Had a 2 night stay at Engine Inn, bought through KGB deals. To begin with found it very difficult to get booked in even though I gave 6 dates of availability but the owner was reluctant to book us in knowing that it was a voucher deal! I rang again and eventually managed to get booked in! Lovely and friendly young waiters and bar staff and the morning breakfast lady was very friendly and accommodating. Food fabulous and loads of it, only downside was I was looking forward to the steak and ale pie on the Friday night (as people had recommended it on the Thursday night) but it was 'Flame grill night' so was limited to steaks or burger, a bit disappointing as limited choice! Still lovely food though, especially the chips - fab chef!
Room - small but everything you would need and the bathroom is modern and the power shower is great - downside all damp and mold on the ceilings and walls! Room was dimly lit (I think a couple of bulbs needed replacing) and was too hot - especially at night!
Wouldn't stay here again but if in the area would definitely go for a meal! The young friendly staff made it a very good stay!

Had just one night here but very enjoyable. Clean, welcoming, although I missed breakfast which did not start until 9am, my partner was able to stay and fully recommended it. Rooms could do with refreshing in terms of towels etc, but overall very clean and an enjoyable stay.
