“Friendly and good beer”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Almost 4 stars. The staff/owners are very friendly and the Pub was welcoming. The room was on the small side but not a problem and was very clean and tidy. The beer was excellent . The evening food was typical ' pub grub' and normal Lake District prices . The breakfast was excellent and would keep most people going all day. Just missed out on 4 stars because of ironing board on corridor and bed not made/ milk in room not topped up. Would return again for Cartmel Races which is a superb day out in good weather.

Went for the weekend on a KGB Deal. The room was small but comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was amazing and we had two lovely meals as we ate first night included in deal and second night we ate by choice. Puddings were scrumptious.

It has a small comfy bar serving real ales and is an ideal base for walking and visiting the lake district and Cartmel Village which is beautiful with little gift shops and coffee shops. A very enjoyable weekend.

Stayed for 2 nights on a KGB deal that included a 2 course evening meal. Owners were away on holiday. Greeted by a friendly young barman who took us up to our rooms and explained where the fire exit was and what our deal entitled us to. Our room was a good size, nicely decorated and with a decent sized bathroom. The pub has a good range of hand pulled beers on and gives discounts to Camra members. However the 2 nights that we were there the place was completely dead and we were the only ones in the place. On the second night the barmaid announced at 9.30 pm that she was shutting up shop so if we wanted another drink we would have to take it up to our room! The evening meal that we had was just about passable but if I had to pay the published price for it I would have felt a bit aggrieved. The breakfast however was really good and set you up for the day. This pub and the surrounding area of Cark both seem to be a bit unloved and in need of some attention. Our stay was OK for the price paid but that is all.

Will not be returning, do not want to sit eating with owners dog weaving in and out of tables or sat watching every mouthful you eat! Other locals bring their dogs in as customers are eating. The place was untidy, ironing on corridors between rooms , tables left uncleared from previous night , bed made but bins not emptied or stock on room drinks tray replenished. Sensed owners have lost interest?

We are not 'trying' to be anything other than what we are. We are a family run Country Pub with B&B. It is also our home, if people don't like our dog we take him upstairs it is not a problem.

I went here today with high expectations. We had seen the pub on the railway programme with Michael Portillo. The Morecambe bay potted shrimps looked good, so we decided to journey over there for lunch.

I wish we had not bothered. The beer was excellent, which my son enjoyed very much. So if you are going for a drink only then you will not be disappointed.

But if you are going for food you maybe very disappointed. I had the Morecambe bay shrimps, which is a starter or light lunch, a starter really. I was a little disappointed that the shrimps were not in a pot and I would be able to spread them myself. They were piled onto a very tiny crumpet. Never had a crumpet so small before. But saying that it was tasty.

Now my sons meal. He had the sea food paella which was on the specials, nothing special about it I'm afraid. Basically he paid £10 for a bowl of yellow rice, I wanted to complain, but like I have said in previous posts, we are not complainers, we just never go back and never recommend! Don't go for food. We should have known that it would be bad, like a previous reviewer mentions the place round the back is a tip, the flag out front is ripped and torn, and I don't know why. They bothered with the hanging baskets, just felt very unloved. Shame, it could be so good there.

a pleasant one night stay in a bit of a one horse town! rooms spotless service in bar very good but the meals were just lacking in our opinion . the much awaited Morecambe bay potted shrimps were certainly not the same as enjoyed by mr portillo on tv . the main couse was ok and the following morning breakfast was again ok .rooms were quiet which considering England were losing in the world cup (as usual ) was much appreciated . don't think we would visit again but I have stayed in worse .
