Went to the races in cartmel found the weekend and went in to the royal oak for the beer garden to find the most gorgeous setting with a outdoor marquee and bar
, was greated all the way through by there pleasant staff who would do anything I needed which made the weekend very special for me and my wife, we sat out and I had to try the ribs after I saw them going to another table and my wife had the royal oak pasta which I have to say was by the best meal ive had out in a long time and even tho it was full to the brim we didnt have to wait to long for our meals and the service that we wer giving by jonathan was second to none, on returning to the pub on the sunday for sunday roast and again even though it was really busy the food and service wer amazing, thank you very much to the whole team that made our weekend we would highly recommend this pub to anyone going Into the village and we will be back in summer

At the races weekend and this pub had everything laid on for a fantastic weekend. There was a huge marquee in the garden with bar facilities and some really good live bands laid on. The atmosphere was fantastic and the staff were wonderful! Definitely recommend this for a race weekend! Great garden

We had a lovely meal sat in the beer garden on a warm summers evening! What more could you want? The staff were great and the food was excellent.

This was our first stay in Cartmel and we booked into a room in The Royal Oak, We arrived around lunchtime and although the bar was not that busy when we arrived it still took a good 10 minutes stood at the bar before someone acknowledged we were there. After we managed to book in we were told that the room wasn't quite ready and would be around 45 minutes so we decided to go for a walk. On returning we again stood at the bar for at least 10 minutes before being acknowledged even though a member of staff was stood in front of us emptying a glass washer tray. Eventually we got our room key and had to ask to be shown to the room, the room was ok although slightly boudoir-ish with additional cobwebs.

We had also reserved a table for 19.30 for a meal so went to the bar for 19.00 for a drink before hand and had to yet again wait for service at the bar even though there were 2 members of staff stood behind the bar chatting with each other. At 19.20 we asked about the table and were told that it wasn't ready yet after another 15 minutes we asked about the table again from a different member of staff who didn't seem to realise we had arrived earlier.

Eventually we sat down at our table and ordered, the starter ( a sharing platter which was quite small for the cost) arrived after 45 minutes it took a further 90 minuted for the main courses to arrive. The quality of the food was VERY disappointing....one burger arrived without the cheese and had to be sent back. The burgers themselves were frozen processed meat not freshly made ( even thought the manager insisted that they were freshly made and not frozen), the chips had obviously been sat around under a heat lamp for a long period.

When we complained the management didn't seem to take on board the complaint and tried to blame the poor service on being busy. We were offered free desserts but declined as we didn't want to wait another 2 hours.

Unfortunately in the morning we went downstairs for the breakfast and had to wait again 45 minutes before the food arriving even though we were the only people in the bar.

Overall we were very unimpressed with the service and lack of care and will not be going again!
